The train gave a high-pitched warning, and the doors closed with a sharp sound. A passenger threw herself into the seat next to me, holding a bunch of shopping bags tightly against her chest. “Anyone sitting here?” she asked. “No, please sit,” I replied, wishing the train would start moving soon.
I boarded at Cardiff Central Train Station after spending the New Year’s holiday with my parents. I was supposed to go home the next week, but a call from my wife completely messed up the plan: Our daughter’s singing competition had been brought forward to that evening. Now I sat staring at my watch, silently begging the engine to go faster. The train was crowded with last-minute shoppers, and a few seats away three teenage girls were laughing and showing each other gifts. Their northern accents were a small comfort to me.
“In a rush?” the lady beside me asked. I nodded and began to explain my situation, trying to ignore the pity I saw in her eyes. As the train stopped at each station, the growing darkness outside seemed to steal any hope I had. I checked my phone again and again, but there was no reply from my wife.
Finally, the train arrived. I rushed out of the station and into the biting cold. Snow was falling like feathers, but I had no time to admire it. Finding a taxi, I gave the driver my destination — the City Concert Hall — and felt my voice break. The taxi drove through the busy market, while I kept looking at my phone, feeling each minute slip away too fast.
At last, the taxi pulled up outside the hall. I paid and hurried inside, where a volunteer pointed me to the competition hall. I ran as fast as I could, fearing that I might be too late. The doors were locked; I pressed the bell impatiently. With a soft click, the door opened, and I found myself facing a crowd of parents and teachers. Just then, I heard the words I had been waiting for: “She made it! Your daughter won first place!”
4. How did the author feel according to paragraph 1?
A. Embarrassed. B. Anxious. C. Hopeful. D. Shocked.
5. Why did the author go back early?
A. To join the New Year’s party.
B. To meet his wife at the station.
C. To spend time with his parents.
D. To attend his daughter’s contest.
6. What was the author worried about on the train?
A. His wife’s safety. B. The cold weather.
C. The noisy teenagers. D. His daughter’s situation.
7. What can we know about the author from the text?
A. He was an impatient man. B. He failed to enter the hall.
C. He missed the competition. D. He was surprised by the result.

A new study has found that a lizard (蜥蜴) that once lived in forests has gone through genetic (基因的) changes to survive in city environments. The lizard’s official name is Anolis cristatellus. It is commonly found in Puerto Rico.
The team said they discovered the lizard had grown special scales (鳞片) that helped it climb more easily on smooth surfaces like walls and windows. It also grew longer legs in order to run faster across open areas. Research results were recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Kristin Winchell is a biology professor at New York University and the main writer of the study. She told The Associated Press, “We are watching evolution (进化) as it’s unfolding.” Winchell said as city development spreads out around the world, it is important to understand how organisms adapt to new environments. That way, she added, humans can design cities in ways that can support all kinds of animals.
The study examined 96 Anolis cristatellus lizards. The researchers compared the genetic makeup of lizards in forests to those living in Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, as well as two other cities. Scientists found that 33 genes were repeatedly linked to the city spread.
Wouter Halfwerk is an evolutionary ecologist and professor at Vrije University Amsterdam. He was not involved in the study. He told The Associated Press, “You can hardly get closer to a smoking gun,” meaning evidence or proof of something. Halfwerk said he was excited that the researchers were able to identify such rich evidence that the lizards had changed genetically to adapt to a different environment.
The study centered on adult male lizards, so it is unclear if females are changing in the same way or at the same rate as males. The researchers said it is also not clear at which point in a lizard’s life the changes happen.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The uses of lizards’ legs. B. The changes in the lizard’s body.
C. The skills of lizards’ climbing. D. The features of the special scales.
9. How did the researchers make the study?
A. By comparing the lizards’ genes. B. By observing the lizards in forests.
C. By studying the lizards’ lifestyle. D. By testing the lizards’ living environment.
10. What is Halfwerk’s attitude to the study?
A. Negative. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.
11. What does the last paragraph show about the study?
A. It lacks enough attention. B. It has little significance.
C. It meets many difficulties. D. It needs further research.

Hundreds of millions of people turn to chatbots (聊天机器人) for advice, so it was only a matter of time before tech companies offered programs to answer health questions. Recently, a large tech company introduced a health chatbot that can analyze users’ medical records and wearable device data. Another company offers similar features.
Both companies say their programs are not a substitute for professional care and should not be used to diagnose illnesses. Instead, they can explain test results, help prepare for a doctor’s visit, or find health trends from medical records. However, before you talk to a chatbot about your health, there are several things to consider.
AI platforms are not perfect. They can sometimes provide bad advice, but the information they produce is more likely to be personalized and specific than a simple online search. Dr. Robert Wachter, a medical technology expert at the University of California, San Francisco, said, “I think that if you use these tools responsibly, you can get useful information.”
But if you have worrying symptoms (症状) such as shortness of breath, chest pain or a severe headache, skip the AI and seek immediate medical attention. Dr. Lloyd Minor of Stanford University said, “Even in less urgent situations, keep a degree of healthy doubt. If you’re talking about a major medical decision, you should never be relying just on what you’re getting out of a large language model.”
Privacy (隐私) is another concern. Health data shared with AI companies is not protected by the same law that covers doctors and hospitals. Users must understand they are facing completely different privacy standards.
Testing also shows chatbots can stumble. A 1,298-participant study by Oxford University recently found that people using AI didn’t make better decisions than those using online searches. The lead author, Adam Mahdi, and his team found several problems. People often didn’t give the chatbots the necessary information to correctly identify the health issue. However, the AI systems often responded with a combination of good and bad information, and users had trouble distinguishing between the two.
12. What role can the health chatbot play?
A. A health helper. B. A privacy defender.
C. A professional doctor. D. An emergency lifeguard.
13. What do Minor’s words in paragraph 4 mean?
A. We should doubt experts. B. We can’t trust AI completely.
C. AI can’t offer health advice. D. AI may be a language model.
14. Which can explain the underlined word “stumble” in the last paragraph?
A. Develop. B. Finish. C. Fail. D. Work.
15. What may be the best title for the text?
A. How to Use Health Chatbots Correctly B. What to Know Before Using Health Chatbots
C. The Privacy of Health Data Is Fully Guaranteed D. Health Chatbots Are Always Perfect for Treatment

Make Your Breaks Count
Students often believe that a break is time stolen from study. In fact, a short purposeful break can refresh your brain and help you return with better focus. ____16____ If you spend the whole break scrolling through short videos, your eyes and mind may stay tired. So, to truly benefit, you need to plan your breaks just as carefully as your study sessions. Let’s explore some practical steps to make every break truly count.
Start by planning the break before you need it. Work for a clear block of time, such as 40 or 50 minutes, and then stop. ____17____ A walk, a glass of water, a few stretches or simply looking out of the window can work well.
____18____ Without a limit, “five minutes” can easily become half an hour. Set a timer and place it where you can hear it. When it rings, go back to the first small task on your list.
Your phone may be the biggest challenge. ____19____ Leave it across the room, or use a paper book, music player or water bottle instead. The point is to make the healthier choice easy.
Finally, treat breaks as part of learning, not as a reward you must feel guilty about. ____20____ You will study with more energy, and your free time will feel freer too.
A. Decide how long the break will last.
B. Not all breaks, however, have the same effect.
C. This helps your brain switch from work to rest.
D. So do something different from sitting at a screen.
E. It can pull you into another long period of attention.
F. In this way, rest supports your plan instead of breaking it.
G. You should take the longest break when homework is hardest.

It was a bright Saturday morning in October when my class set off for our school hiking trip to Green Mountain. The autumn leaves painted the hills in gold and red, and everyone was in high spirits. I walked with my best friend Lily, chatting and laughing as we climbed the winding trail.
At noon, we reached the top and enjoyed a picnic lunch together. The view was amazing — hills stretched far into the distance. After eating, I took out my camera and asked a classmate to take a photo of Lily and me. In my excitement, I put my backpack down beside a large rock and forgot all about it.
When it was time to go back down, I joined the group and walked with Lily, still talking happily. It wasn’t until we reached the parking lot that I suddenly froze. My backpack! I had left it at the top. Inside were my textbooks, my wallet, and the house key my mother had given me that morning.
My face turned pale. The teachers had already started calling names, and the buses were about to leave. There was no way I could climb back up in time. Tears came to my eyes as I thought of my mother’s worried face.
Just then, a tall man in a green jacket walked over. He had been hiking alone and had heard me talking to Lily. “I saw your backpack near the big rock,” he said with a warm smile. “I’m going back up to enjoy the sunset. I can bring it down for you.”
I looked at him, unsure what to do. My teacher, Mrs Wang, came over and asked for his phone number. He wrote it down on a piece of paper and handed it to me. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll take good care of it. Call me this evening.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据划线词后文“people using AI didn’t make better decisions than those using online searches. The lead author, Adam Mahdi, and his team found several problems. People often didn’t give the chatbots the necessary information to correctly identify the health issue. (使用人工智能的人与使用在线搜索的人在做出决策方面并无明显差异。第一作者亚当·马赫迪及其团队发现了几个问题:人们往往没有向聊天机器人提供必要的信息,导致其无法准确识别健康问题。)”可知,研究发现 AI 输出信息好坏混杂,会出错,stumble此处表示“出错、失败”,对应 fail。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Hundreds of millions of people turn to chatbots (聊天机器人) for advice, so it was only a matter of time before tech companies offered programs to answer health questions. Recently, a large tech company introduced a health chatbot that can analyze users’ medical records and wearable device data. Another company offers similar features.

句子谓语是host,空格处作后置定语修饰Cities;be known as...
both...and...

I watched the man walk back up the trail, holding the paper tightly in my hand. The buses started moving, and I pressed my face against the window, watching the mountain grow smaller in the distance. What if he forgot? What if he couldn’t find my backpack? Lily squeezed my hand, but I couldn’t stop worrying. The whole ride home, I kept checking the paper in my pocket, reading his number over and over again.
That evening, I called the number he had given me. My hands shook as I dialed. “Hello?” a warm voice answered. It was him! He told me he had reached the top before sunset and found my backpack right where I’d left it. He was driving to my neighborhood that weekend and offered to drop it off on Sunday morning. When the doorbell rang the next day, I rushed to open it. There he stood, my backpack in his hands, the autumn sun lighting up his smiling face. “Thank you so much,” I said, my voice trembling. He waved goodbye, refusing the money my mother offered. That October morning, I learned that kindness from a stranger can shine brighter than any sunset on Green Mountain.
