Passage 1
All people have feelings. Feelings are reactions (反应) to other people and things that happen. People can have different feelings about the same dung.
You have many different kinds of feelings. Our faces show how we feel. For example, when you lose something, your face probably looks sad. When you find what you lose, your face will probably look happy.
We also show our feelings by what we say and do. It’s important to show feelings and talk about them. However, we must have self-control over how we do that. Self-control means having control over your feelings and actions. When you feel angry, you can stay angry, or you can use self-control to cool off.
Here are some ways to control your feelings.

★Think about what you really want.
★Talk politely about your feelings.

But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he was not getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” has his own sense of humor (幽默感). He saw funny films and read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain. His own happy feelings helped him feel well again. He said laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor thought so, too.

To my surprise, when I was going to bed, one of my classmates told me that someone was calling me. I ran out and saw that my father was outside with a lunch-box (饭盒) in his hand. He went over and gave me that lunch-box. He was very tired from the long trip. Without saying anything, he went away in the dark. Back to the room, I cried.

Passage 9
Growing up is a wonderful journey full of happiness, challenges and growth. Every one of us grows up in our own way, but we all learn important lessons along the way.
First, growing up teaches us to be independent. When we are young, we depend on our parents for everything. But as we grow older, we learn to do things by ourselves, such as dressing ourselves, finishing our homework and looking after our own things. This helps us become more confident and strong.
Second, growing up teaches us to face challenges bravely. Life is full of difficulties, and we will meet many challenges as we grow up. These challenges may make us sad or tired, but they also help us grow. We learn to solve problems by ourselves and become more capable.
Third, growing up teaches us to be thankful. We should be thankful to our parents, teachers and friends who have supported and helped us along the way. They encourage us when we are in trouble and celebrate our success with us.
Finally, growing up teaches us to be responsible. We learn to take responsibility for our own actions and make good decisions. We know that our choices will affect ourselves and others, so we become more careful and thoughtful.

Sometimes, we all get angry. Did you ever get so angry that you thought you were going to do anything terrible?
Sometimes, I can get very angry with someone. It might be my little sister or my elder brother, or even my pet dog or cat!
Last Friday, I helped my parents sweep the floor. When I was ready to have a rest, my elder brother threw some pieces of paper on the floor. What a mess! However, he thought it was fun. I got so angry with him that I broke a window in the house although I knew it was a terrible thing.
My mum let me sit down and said to me, “Nick, breaking things is never the right way to solve a problem.” When Dad came home from work, he told me that I would have to use the money I got for my twelfth birthday to buy a new window. How upset I was! Then he said to me, “Using words is always better than hitting or fighting. If you were angry with John who shouldn’t throw things everywhere, why didn’t you tell him about your feeling? When you do bad things out of anger, you will always feel sorry for them.”

Passage 1
Growing up is a journey with both challenges and discoveries. For Tony, his first year in high school was a period of great change. He was always one of the shortest boys in his class and felt a bit insecure (缺乏信心的), especially when his classmates talked about their latest growth spurts (生长突增).
In the first term, Tony tried out for the school basketball team but was not accepted. He was very disappointed. However, his P. E. teacher, Mr. Wang, noticed his passion (热情) and suggested he join the table tennis team instead. Mr. Wang said, “Success doesn’t only come from height; it comes from practice and a strong heart.”
Tony took his teacher’s advice. He started to practice table tennis every day after school. At first, it was difficult, and he lost many games. But he didn’t give up. He learned from his mistakes and watched videos to improve his skills.
By the time the second term came, Tony had become one of the best players on the team. He even won a medal in a city-wide competition. Passage 2
Dear Lilly,
I waited a year to write this letter to you. A year ago, I lost you and my world was not the same again. It was a sunny day and you were lying in the sun. I started off to see a movie and when I looked back, we looked at each other and then I left.
When I came home, you died alone in your small bed.
As I took your little body to the animal hospital, I just kept thinking how much I would miss you.
When it was time to let you go, I couldn’t. I just sat there and held you.
I still miss you. I miss when I came home, I found one of your toys left on my bed. I used to think that was your gift to me. You knew I worked too hard and needed to play sometimes. I still can’t think about welcoming another cat into my home now. It’s too hard. I volunteer now at the animal shelter (救护站) because I first found you there.
We only got to spend two short years together. I don’t know what your life was like before I found you, but I know what my life was like after I got you. Nothing ever seemed bad because we were together. Please know that I will never forget you, I will always love you and I hope one day to see you again.
Love,
Kelli

Passage3
Everyone worries. But how do you deal with your worries? Whether your worries are big or small, you can take these three steps to deal with your worries: Try to find out what you’re worried about. Sometimes, you may know what you’re worried about. Other times, you may not. Try to find it out first; if you can’t, you can ask for help.
Think of ways to make things better. There is always something you can do to help feel less worried. Sitting there worrying is no fun and it won’t solve your problem. Grades at school are often top worries for kids. If you’re worried about grades, ask yourself these questions: Why are grades important? What do grades mean to me? How do I get ready for class? Do I go over my notes even when there isn’t a test? Do I have a good place to do my homework? Have I tried different ways of studying?
If your worry is about a fight you had with a friend, you may write down all the things you can do — write a note to him or her, invite him or her to a basketball game, say sorry to him or her, etc. Once you have a list of the things you can do, you can choose the one that gets your friend back.
Ask for help.
When you’re worried, it is helpful to find someone to talk to. You can ask your parents, friends or teachers for help.
1.How many steps for dealing with your worries are mentioned (提及) in the passage?

Passage 4
Do you laugh every day? Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day on average (平均). That is lots of laughter.
In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. They aren’t a place for people to watch interesting shows. They’re a place for people to practice laughing. People get together every morning. First, they put their hands on their heads. Then they pretend (假装) to laugh. But after a short time, everyone is laughing naturally. They say they feel good after laughing together.
Scientists believe that laughter is good for us. Why do they think so? For one thing, laughter is good exercise. When we laugh, we exercise many muscles (肌肉) in our body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs is the same as ten minutes of running. For another, when we laugh, we also breathe deeply (深呼吸). This helps us relax. That’s good for us, too.
Why do we laugh? That’s a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group. They don’t laugh very often when there is no one with them. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to connect (把……联系起来) with other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group.
Some people even say that laughter is the best medicine. If a man is ill, laughter can help him get well. What do you think?

Passage 5
My grandma is a gentle old lady. Like many women of her time, she has a talent for sewing (缝纫). She made all my childhood clothes on her own. As a young girl, rather than playing outside with my friends, I liked staying with my grandmother to help her sew. I was so interested in getting the thread (线) through the eyes of the needle (针).
Later, instead of making clothes, my grandmother would sew gloves or insoles (鞋垫) for me. She cannot be with me all the time, but the love passed by her needle and thread warms me.
It was my grandma who sparked my enthusiasm (热情) for sewing and taught me how to show love and care. Almost a year ago, I was trying to give a birthday present to my friend. Then, I thought, “Why don’t I sew her a gift? I decided to make her a pencil case. I cut out the pattern (图案) from my old skirt, drew a design and started sewing. It took me many days to finish it. The final result wasn’t as pretty as I had imagined, but it was the best pencil case that I could make.
Just yesterday, my friend called me and said that every time she sees the pencil case, she would think of me and the warm feeling.

Passage 6
People sometimes think “what if something goes wrong?” It’s normal to have these “what-if” thoughts. We need to understand these kinds of thoughts and deal with them, so that we will be less worried.
Worrying about the future is a common thing in life. Sometimes, everyone will think about what will happen if things don’t go as we want. For example, “What if I make a mistake?” or “What if people laugh at me?” These “what-if” thoughts are all about bad results. When we spend a lot of time thinking about bad things that might happen, we are imagining the future as a disaster. Thinking too much about “what-if” makes us feel anxious and worried. For example, we may feel sad and it’s hard to focus on what we are doing.
There are different ways to help ourselves. Angela McMillan suggests making an “if/then” plan. She says, “For example, if you have to speak in front of the class, then you can take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that you are ready and it’s okay. Or if a social event is too noisy and you feel uncomfortable, then you can go outside for a few minutes.” We can also ask ourselves how possible it is for something to really happen.
Angela McMillan points out that most of our worries don’t actually happen. She says, “Remember, these are just thoughts. The bravest thing we can do is not to let worry control us.” We should try to pay attention to what we are doing.
Being angry with ourselves will make us feel worse. So we should be nice to ourselves.
1.How can people be less worried about “what-if” thoughts?
________________________________________________________________
2.How will we feel if we think too much about bad results?
________________________________________________________________
3.According to Angela McMillan, what can you do at a noisy and uncomfortable social event?

5.What do you think of Angela McMillan’s suggestion?

Passage 7
How to Develop a Better Relationship with Your Parents
As students, developing a good relationship with your parents is very important. But most of the time, there are all kinds of problems between you and your parents. If you are looking for ways to solve these problems, you are not alone. The following suggestions may be helpful.
First, express thanks to your parents. Consider all your parents have done for you; all the ways that they have helped you; all the ways they have influenced how you think. You may find yourself feeling thankful for your parents and more willing to improve the relationship. Then express your thanks with your actions. Get them a nice gift or do some extra housework without being asked. They will likely be happy with you for this.
Second, think about problems from their perspective (角度). It’s necessary to do so because everyone is different. You should also accept that your parents are different. They grow up in different times with different ways of thinking. If you have a poor relationship with your parents just because you finish your homework with the help of the Internet, talk with them about your opinion patiently. They will understand you.
Last, be open and honest. One way to improve your relationship is to be more willing to discuss uncomfortable topics with your parents. You should have an in-depth (深入的) talk with your parents once a week. This will help to build trust in your relationship with them, which will improve your relationship with them. If you listen to your parents, they will be more likely to listen to you.
1.What should you do first to develop a better relationship with your parents?

Passage 8
Winter can make people feel bad. However, if you can learn to see things differently, you will love it.
Why can the darker months sometimes make people feel bad?
During winter, the windy and cold weather makes you spend less time outside. If you don’t dress warmly, you will feel bad. Frances Trussell, who helps people with their mental (精神的) health, says, “If you describe a picture of a happy day, it would have a blue, sunny sky. So you might find darker winter days more difficult. ”
Some people have seasonal affective disorder (SAD季节性情感障碍) because of less sunshine in winter. This can make people feel sad and upset, but there are ways to become happy.
Learn From Other CountriesCountries in Northern Europe have even less sunshine than other countries in winter. However, Finland, Denmark and Iceland are three of the happiest countries in the world. People in these countries don’t wish winter to be lighter or warmer. They accept that it is dark and cold, and they know spring will come.
Frances Trussell, a mental health teacher
Ideas From Some PeopleIt’s important for you to spend time with friends and family in winter months. You can play together and talk with each other happily. What’s more, too much screen time can make you feel bad. Painting, making cakes and DIY can be great ways to have fun.
To get through the cold and dark winter months, I enjoy having a movie night with a hot chocolate. I also like spending time with my family. My favorite part about winter is going for walks with my family. Although we have to wear big coats, hats, scarves and gloves, it’s really a happy time for us.
Harrison, a 9-year-old student
You can’t change the weather, but you can make it more enjoyable. As Shelley’s poem says, “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”

How upset I was! Then he said to me, “Using words is always better than hitting or fighting. If you were angry with John who shouldn’t throw things everywhere, why didn’t you tell him about your feeling? When you do bad things out of anger, you will always feel sorry for them.”

Passage 2
Dear Lilly,
I waited a year to write this letter to you.
Love,

People in these countries don’t wish winter to be lighter or warmer. They accept that it is dark and cold, and they know spring will come.
