Humour Dictionary
Observational humour is based on comments about everyday life.Comedians who use this type of humour often start by saying,“Have you ever noticed how...?” Then, they make funny comments about everyday things such as work, marriage, children, etc. This trend began in the 1970s with US comedians such as Bill Cosby and Jay Leno.
Slapstick humour is very physical. It involves characters falling down, hitting people or crashing into things. This type of comedy is very common in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, and Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.Typical comedians, such as Laurel,Hardy (independent of The Three Stooges),Charlie Chaplin, and Rowan Atkinson are people’s favourites.
Self-deprecating humour involves making jokes about yourself or drawing attention to your faults.George Costanza from the comedy series Seinfeld uses a lot of self-deprecating humour, often making jokes about his lack of hair, his weight and his shallow personality.Comedians such as Chris Farley,Conan O’Brien,David Letterman and Woody Allen also use self-deprecating comedy.
Toilet humour often focuses on the noises and functions of the body. It’s often viewed as rude, impolite and childish, although many people find it very funny. There’s a hilarious(可笑的) scene involving toilet humour in the film Along Came Polly.Reuben (Ben Stiller) is invited back to Polly’s apartment (Jennifer Aniston). After dinner,Reuben accidentally blocks the toilet. In an attempt to unblock it,he uses her hand-embroidered towel (a gift from her grandmother) and an expensive loofah(丝瓜络).Eventually, the toilet overflows, leaving Reuben with no option but to leave.

Laughter is often called the best medicine, but according to a new study led by researchers from Pennsylvania State University,it could also serve as an effective parenting tool.“Humour can teach people cognitive(认知的) flexibility, relieve stress, and promote creative problem solving and resilience,” noted Benjamin Levi, the senior author of the study.
The researchers surveyed 312 individuals aged 18 to 45.More than half reported being raised by caregivers who used humour, and 71.8% agreed that humour can be an effective parenting tool. The majority also said they either use or plan to use humour with their children and believe it has more potential benefits than drawbacks.
The researchers also found that among those who reported that their parents used humour,50.5% said they had a good relationship with their parents, and 44.2% felt their parents did a good job raising them.On the contrary, among those whose parents didn’t use humour, only 2.9% reported having a good relationship with their parents, and just 3.6% believed their parents had done a good job.
According to the study’s first author Lucy Emery, both business and parenting are hierarchical(等级制的).“In business, humour is shown to help reduce hierarchies, create better environments for collaboration and creativity, and relieve tension,” she said, noting that while parent-child relationships are more loving than business relationships, stressful situations are common in parenting.“Humour can help reduce that tension and hierarchy, making both parties feel better about stressful situations.”
The study authors noted that if these findings are generalizable, they potentially open the door to a much deeper exploration of how “parenting humour” can be appropriately applied to enhancing the experiences of both children and their parents.“To that end,we should examine how parents currently use different kinds of humour, and how to map these uses of humour onto existing knowledge and theory,” Levi said.
4.What’s the purpose of the new study?
A.To prove strict parenting is outdated.
B.To measure different people’s sense of humour.
C.To explore humour’s role in parenting.
D.To compare humour in parenting and business.
5.What might happen to humourous parents according to the study?
A.They bond better with their children.
B.They tend to be successful in business.
C.They avoid conflicts with their children.
D.They face challenges in establishing authority.
6.What is humour’s role in business?
A.Creating a formal environment.
B.Maintaining authority structures.
C.Making relationships feel more balanced.
D.Increasing power differences between parties.
7.How does the author end this text?
A.By offering choices of new research methods.
B.By discussing the direction for further research.
C.By stressing the need to involve more participants.
D.By mentioning potential applications of the findings.

The school’s annual Animal Day performance is coming. How much happiness will it bring to the teachers and students?Jamie wandered. As a lively and humourous student,Jamie often makes his classmates burst into laughter with his humour, sometimes even in class. But now,he sat in his English class, mindlessly doodling(涂鸦) on his notebook, when suddenly a notice came from the loudspeaker of the classroom.
“Jamie Turner, please report to the headmaster’s office immediately.”
Jamie’s heart sank, not knowing what it was for. When he reached the headmaster’s office he took a deep breath and prepared himself for the worst. But what he found was far beyond his expectations. The headmaster,Mr Harrison was wearing a giant yellow chicken hat on his head. The hat had red combs, white feathers, and wings that covered his ears.Jamie’s mouth fell open at the sight, too shocked to speak.
Mr Harrison glanced at Jamie over his reading glasses,“I’ve called you here because we’ve been having some complaints about your behaviour.”
“Complaints?” Jamie repeated, trying to keep his voice steady.
“Yes,” he said,nodding seriously.“You’ve been...too funny.”
He leaned forward,“You see,we’re getting reports from your classmates that you’re constantly making them laugh in class. They can’t focus on learning.”
Jamie’s jaw dropped further. Was that really the reason he was called to the headmaster’s office?
The principal continued, his tone serious,“Now,we take our education very seriously here, and while we appreciate a good sense of humour,we have to draw the line somewhere. We cannot have students spoiling the learning environment with their...their humour.Well,just...just make sure you keep your jokes to a minimum during class time, okay?”
Jamie nodded promising he would try to be less funny in class.“Um,Mr Harrison, why are you wearing a chicken hat?” Jamie asked, unable to contain his curiosity.Mr Harrison told Jamie that he would play the part of a chicken at the school’s Animal Day performance.Jamie grinned, imagining the sight of his normally serious principal acting like a chicken.
