Planning an educational trip for your students? Think about taking them to explore some of the most sustainable parks in the U.S.
Discovery Green Park
Discovery Green Park in Houston, Texas is full of dog runs, lakes, eco-friendly art displays, playgrounds, and sustainable buildings. Park managers follow through with organic gardening and landscaping methods, and there’s even an on-site recycling center. This park will show students how urban parks can follow sustainable practices and help the environment.
Denali National Park and Preserve
If your school can swing a trip to Alaska, then a visit to Denali National Park and Preserve should be at the top of your list. It is committed to being a green park by reducing energy and water consumption and promoting educational courses on climate change.
Eden Park
186 acres (英亩) of beauty is found in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since its conception, the park has been going green, with a pilot solar and wind energy project that began in 2006. The goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using renewable energy to power city buildings. Students will note solar panels throughout — even solar garbage cans.
North Cascades National Park
Founded in Washington in 1968, North Cascades National Park has created an environmental learning center that’s completely green and great for students. They’ll find a rooftop rainwater harvest system, green lighting, buildings made with recycled goods, and so much more!

Research often points to exercise as a good way to improve mental health, but a recent study from the University of Georgia suggests that it’s not just physical movement that affects mental health. It’s how, where and why you exercise that makes the difference.
“In previous (以前的) research, physical-activity research has focused on how long someone exercises for or how many calories are burned,” said Patrick O’Connor, co-author of the study. “The amount of exercise has been the main way researchers have tried to understand how physical activity might influence mental health, while often ignoring whether those minutes were spent exercising with a friend or as part of a game.”
Many studies found that people who take part in regular leisure-time physical activity, like going for a run, taking a yoga class or biking for fun, tend to report lower levels of anxiety. But while leisure-time physical activity offers better mental health outcomes, these benefits may vary greatly depending on the environment of the activity, according to the researchers.
“For example, if a soccer player runs down the field and kicks the game-winning ball, their mental health is fantastic,” O’Connor said. “In contrast, if you do the exact same exercise but miss the goal and people are blaming (责备) you, you likely feel very differently.”
Many studies also showed that adopting regular exercise routines improved mental health, especially for individuals with existing mental health disorders. However, these studies were typically based on similar samples, so the results aren’t probably suitable for more diverse groups. “If we’re trying to help people’s mental health through exercise, then not only do we need to think about the amount and the mode, we also need to ask: What is the context (背景)?” O’Connor said.
For O’Connor, the key point is clear. It’s not just movement that matters. It’s the meaning, the context and the experience of the activity that determine the influence of exercise on mental health.
4. What has been largely overlooked in previous research?
A. The length and type of exercise.
B. The social environment of physical activity.
C. The number of calories burned during exercise.
D. The physical health outcomes of regular exercise.
5. What can we learn from the soccer player example?
A. Winning ensures mental health benefits.
B. Playing football can improve mental health.
C. Blame from others leads to bad mental health.
D. Context matters in how exercise affects mental health.
6. What does O’Connor suggest scientists do?
A. Avoid studying people with mental health disorders.
B. Focus more on the amount of exercise in future studies.
C. Pay attention to the context of exercise in their research.
D. Prove what is the real effect of exercise on mental health.
7. Which situation best matches the “context effect” described in the text?
A. Lily buys lighter running shoes and runs faster.
B. Ben sleeps nine hours the night after swimming.
C. Mary loses 2 kg after jogging 5 km every day for a month.
D. Tom feels great cycling with friends but bored when cycling alone.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. D

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The amount of exercise has been the main way researchers have tried to understand how physical activity might influence mental health, while often ignoring whether those minutes were spent exercising with a friend or as part of a game.(运动量一直是研究人员试图理解体育活动如何影响心理健康的主要方式,而往往忽略了这些时间是与朋友一起锻炼还是作为游戏的一部分。)”可知,以往研究主要关注运动量,却很大程度上忽视了体育活动的社交环境。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“For example, if a soccer player runs down the field and kicks the game-winning ball, their mental health is fantastic. In contrast, if you do the exact same exercise but miss the goal and people are blaming you, you likely feel very differently.(例如,如果一名足球运动员带球突破并踢进致胜一球,他们的心理健康状态会非常好。相反,如果你做完全相同的运动,但错失进球且被他人责备,你的感受可能会截然不同。)”可知,相同的运动行为因不同的背景产生不同的心理健康影响,说明背景在运动对心理健康的作用中至关重要。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“If we’re trying to help people’s mental health through exercise, then not only do we need to think about the amount and the mode, we also need to ask: What is the context?(如果我们试图通过运动来改善人们的心理健康,那么我们不仅需要考虑运动量和运动方式,还需要问:运动的背景是什么?)”可知,奥康纳建议科学家在研究中关注运动的背景因素。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文核心观点“运动的背景、意义和体验决定其对心理健康的影响”及文中例子可知,“背景效应”指相同运动因场景、陪伴者等背景不同产生不同心理感受,结合最后一段中的“It’s the meaning, the context and the experience of the activity that determine the influence of exercise on mental health.(正是活动的意义、背景和体验决定了运动对心理健康的影响。)”可知,汤姆和朋友骑行时心情愉悦,独自骑行时感到无聊,相同运动因陪伴者这一背景差异产生不同心理体验,最符合“背景效应”。故选D项。

We all know that exercise is good for our body. It helps us build a strong heart and keep a healthy weight. But did you know that exercise is also great for your brain? Recent studies show that physical activity can actually change the brain in some amazing ways, making us think better and feel happier.
The first change is about the brain’s ability to learn and remember. When we exercise, our heart sends more blood to the brain, carrying oxygen and important food. This helps the brain cells grow and become stronger. Scientists have found that a part of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体), which is very important for memory, gets larger in people who exercise often. This means these people may find it easier to learn new things and get higher scores on tests.
Besides a better memory, exercise is also a powerful way to improve our mood. During and after physical activity, the brain produces more “feel-good” chemicals. These natural brain chemicals help to reduce feelings of worry and stress. You don’t need to run a long way to get the result. Even a short walk or some simple sports can make you feel more relaxed and happy.
So, how can you add more exercise to your life? You don’t have to be an athlete. The key is to find an activity you enjoy. It could be walking or riding a bike to school, joining a dance club, or just playing ball games with friends in the park. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days.
In short, exercise is not just about building a healthy body. It is also one of the most effective ways to build a healthier, happier, and smarter brain. Next time you need a break from study, perhaps going out for some exercise is the best choice.
8. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Exercise is the best way to build a strong body.
B. Exercise has great effects on the brain as it does on the body.
C. Students should spend more time playing sports.
D. The hippocampus is the most important part of the brain.
9. According to Paragraph 2, how does exercise help us learn better?
A. By making us feel happier and more relaxed.
B. By helping brain cells grow stronger in the hippocampus.
C. By allowing the heart to send less blood to the brain.
D. By making us want to learn new things.
10. How does exercise help to improve our mood?
A. By bringing more blood and oxygen to the brain during physical activity.
B. By helping our brain learn new things and remember information better.
C. By making the hippocampus, an important part for memory, become larger.
D. By producing natural brain chemicals that reduce feelings of worry and stress.
11. What does the author suggest for adding exercise to our life?
A. We must become excellent athletes.
B. We should run a long way every day.
C. We need to find an activity we enjoy.
D. We have to join a school sports team.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. C

How Sports Develop Empathy (共鸣)
Sports do more than build physical strength — they develop children’s empathy that lasts a lifetime.
The benefits of teamwork
____16____. Whether setting up a goal in soccer or working together in a relay race, kids learn that success depends on teamwork. They begin to appreciate different strengths and roles, which helps them respect different skills and viewpoints, building an empathetic attitude.
____17____
From winning a championship to losing a close game, sports create emotional bonds (情感纽带). After a tough loss, teammates might share lessons or offer encouragement. These moments teach kids to support each other through highs and lows, strengthening their ability to empathize.

Many athletes also support social causes, showing that empathy is beyond the game. Children tend to look up to these figures and learn to care about others. ____18____.
Lessons learned through competition
Healthy competition teaches respect for opponents. Kids see the hard work others put in and learn to appreciate their efforts. ____19____. For example, a tennis player might praise their opponent after a match, putting respect above competition.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the test is difficult, I am well prepared for it.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote the word on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty minutes later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I’m going to mark your papers,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter got an English-Chinese dictionary —the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he waved it highly. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter shouted.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his performance. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to the word. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. It was wrong. “What should I do?” Peter asked himself, staring at the red full marks.

【答案】One Possible Version
Peter was lost in thought. “Should I return the dictionary? If so, I would lose what I have expected for a long time. But, if not, I can’t persuade myself to pretend to be as calm as nothing happened.” Suddenly Mum’s words flew into his mind: “We ought to be honest.” Without any hesitation, holding the dictionary and the test paper in hand, Peter approached to Mr. White quickly. Being praised for honesty in front of the class, Peter was very delighted and decided to get full marks in the next test.
A month later, Peter happily told his mother a piece of good news. He would be given the title An honesty boy by the school the next day. Hearing the news, as excited as Peter, Mum kissed Peter on the cheek, saying “I feel so proud of you for your good virtue, honey.” At school, Mr. White handed the dictionary to Peter once again, saying it was not for his score but for his good quality. Laughter lingering around the classroom, Peter set an example to other students that honesty is the best policy.

C
