Have you ever wondered what makes a person truly great? Is it talent, luck, or something else? Scientists who study success have found that greatness is rarely about natural ability alone. Instead, it often comes from a combination of hard work, curiosity, and the courage to keep going even when things get difficult.
Take Thomas Edison, for example. He is famous for inventing the light bulb, but few people know that he failed over 1,000 times before he succeeded. When a reporter asked him how he felt about his failures, Edison replied, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” His curiosity and creativity never stopped, even though he faced countless setbacks.
Another example is Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history. Growing up in Pakistan, she bravely fought for girls’ right to education even though it was dangerous. She was attacked by gunmen but survived and continued her work. Her courage inspired millions of people around the world. Above all, she showed that one person can make a difference.
These stories teach us that greatness is not about being perfect. It is about staying curious, working hard, and never giving up, even though the road is difficult. As Marie Curie once said, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.” When we look up to these inspiring people, we learn that we, too, can achieve great things if we have the courage to try.

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind people can learn to use their fingers to read.
In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. 11 Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.
When Braille was ten years old, his parents sent him to a special school for blind students. Braille learned how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper. 12 Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then, in 1821, Braille heard about a night-reading code system. It was a 12-dot (12凸点)system that was created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn’t allow the fingertip to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters. 13
Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter. 14 Blind people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on. 15
A.It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.
B.Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.
C.Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.

Confucius was a great thinker and teacher in ancient China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu. He acted as an official (官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official, and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base (基础) of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying (服从), and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.

Claude Monet’s paintings were quite different from the art styles that were popular in France in the 1870s. Traditional artists always did their artwork in a studio and their paintings were realistic—— they looked exactly like the real world. Claude Monet was part of a group of painters who were called Impressionists (印象派画家). Their paintings were light and a bit fuzzy—— they gave an impression of what the real world. Sometimes Impressionists worked outside, which was a very unusual thought in their time.
Knowing that trains were interesting subjects and represented modern progress, Claude Monet created a series of Impressionist paintings of trains from January to March of 1877. He worked on his paintings right on the train platform (站台) at the Gare Saint-Lazare, the train station on Saint Lazare Street. Although there were many train stations in Paris, this was the first train station built in Paris so it had historical significance (意义).
Monet’s friend, Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, told the following story to his sons about Claude Monet and painting the trains. Monet needed permission (允许) to spend time on the train platform and paint what he saw in his impressionistic style. One day, Monet put on his very best suit along with a fine hat, a good shirt and a silk tie. He appeared to be a wealthy gentleman while he really was a poor painter. The station master was impressed and gave Monet permission to paint on the train platform. The station master even kept trains from leaving on time so Monet could finish a scene even though passengers complained.
Was it worth it? Monet’s train scenes turned his career into a success and for the station master, made his train station famous even now.

D.However, this was slow and difficult.
E.Braille thought that the 12-dot system was a perfect choice for the blind.
F.When he was three, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes when he was playing.

It is clear that Confucius’ thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.

21.Where is Claude Monet from?
22.What were the interesting subjects in Monet’s paintings according to the passage?
23.When did Claude Monet create the series of train paintings?

Another example is Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history.Growing up in Pakistan,

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind
people can learn to use their fingers to read
In 1809,Braille was born in a small town in France.11 Later, his other eye was infected, resulting
in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind
people.
When Braille was ten years old,his parents sent him to a special school for blind students.Braille learned
how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper.12 Too many
letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then,in 1821,Braille heard about a night-reading code system.It was a 12-dot (12)system that was
created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn't allow the fingertip to cover a
whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters.13
Three years later,Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code
system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (to stand for each letter.14 Blind
people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852,but his touch system lives on.15
A.It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.
B.Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.
C.Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.

Confucius was a great thinker and teacher in ancient China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu.
He acted as an official (there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official, and he ended up
having to leave the state of Lu.He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. In his last
few years,he returned to Oufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his
followers in a book called Lunvu.
Confucius'teachings formed the base (of Chinese thought.Confucius thought everyone should
develop virtues (and always do the right thing.Confucius'thought is considered to have been the necessity
of Eastern thought
To help people understand how to behave towards others,he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese.
They are ren (kindness,charity),vi (fairness),li (ceremony,tradition),zhi (knowledge),and xin(trust).Another
virtue is xiao.Xigo is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying ()and
taking care of one's parents in their old age.Xigo forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal
according to his thought. It means social peace.
It is clear that Confucius'thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will
continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.

Claude Monet's paintings were quite different from the art styles that were popular in France in the 1870s
Traditional artists always did their artwork in a studio and their paintings were realistic-they looked exactly
like the real world.Claude Monet was part of a group of painters who were called Impressionists(印象派画家),

Their paintings were light and a bit fuzzy-they gave an impression of what the real world.Sometimes
Impressionists worked outside, which was a very unusual thought in their time.

D.However, this was slow and difficult.

It is clear that Confucius’ thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.
