Shopping Carts
When you go shopping, you usually use a shopping cart. So the question is: How did shopping carts come into our daily life?
The first shopping carts were put into service by an American grocery store owner called Sylvan Goldman in 1937. At first, Mr Goldman set up self-service stores equipped with (配有) baskets. Customers could carry the baskets while they were shopping. One night in 1936, Goldman sat in his office and wondered how customers could move more groceries. He looked at a wooden folding chair and put a basket on the seat and wheels on the legs. That’s how the idea of the shopping cart came to Mr Goldman’s head.
By 1940, shopping carts became a part of Americans’ life. Supermarkets were redesigned so that people could move around with shopping carts easily. The checkout counter design also changed.
