34.It’s a place where you can play with animals while enjoying the food and drinks. 35.To attract more visitors./Because they want to attract more visitors. 36.The customers need to order drinks and snacks. 37.Yes. Because I can play with animals and I can also read books and relax myself there.
38.例文
Dear schoolmates,
Do you know more and more animals are in danger?
I think there are many endangered animals in the world, such as tigers and pandas. When farmers cut down trees, tigers can no longer hide and hunt. Many tigers are killed by people who want to sell their fur for money. Many rivers are polluted by factories. And there are few places where pandas can live. We are not alone in the world. We human beings could not live without all the plants and animals around us. So protecting wildlife animals is very important. We must take measures to keep plants from being destroyed and stop animals from being killed. We should actively do volunteer activities and distribute posters telling people to love wild animals. It is very easy but useful. We should also do more research to protect them. We don’t eat wild animals. Don’t cut down trees. Only if we human beings take some measures, can wild animals be preserved.
I believe everyone’s small action can make a big difference.
Yours,
Li Hua
39.例文
Good morning everyone. Today, I’d like to talk about our animal friends.
Take dogs for example. Dogs are our most loyal friends as humans. The loyalty of dogs is well-known. No matter what situation the owner is in, the dog always stays by their side. Dogs are very intelligent. They can learn some commands and help people with the simplest things, such as guarding their homes and accompanying the elderly and children. It can sense the emotions of its owner. When the owner is happy, it wags its tail, and when the owner is sad, it quietly accompanies him.
As owners, we should understand the behavior habits of dogs and spend as much time as possible with them to establish friendships and trust relationships. Do not use violence against dogs.
In short, animals are friends of humans, and we should live in harmony. Thanks for listening.

When I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother and I were coming back from a family party. That was our usual weekend activity, but something we didn’t think would happen was waiting for us. There, outside our house, we saw two grown-up geese and a small baby goose. They were afraid of our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We were no strangers to the ways of wild animals, so we knew we shouldn’t touch the baby goose or it would stay with us and be lost to its family completely. Hours passed, and night fell. It became very cold. At that point, we knew we had to help and we brought him into our house.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open until morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our home. He wouldn’t go to them though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to take him back. My sister Joanna decided to call the little goose Peeper, because he would follow us around making a peeping (唧唧叫) noise without stopping.
Almost a year passed. My family spent our days with Peeper’s hugs and my dad would throw (抛) Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle (圈) around the house.
One evening, my uncle came, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s circle. He threw him up into the air, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn’t come back. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a wonderful memory for my family.
Geese keep their promise, and never forget their first home. Even so, I think it was still unbelievable when an old grown-up goose came to my home. At first, I guessed it was just another goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back again and again, it became clear to me that this wasn’t another goose. My old best friend returned, 20 years later.
People need connection with the natural world. Through Peeper, I have learned so much about myself and about the nature of love.
24.The writer’s family saw the geese family ________.
A.before they went back home from outside B.after they returned from their family party
C.in the morning when they got up D.when the geese were flying around
25.The baby goose could stay in the writer’s house because ________.
A.Joanna decided to keep him and give him a name
B.the family promised to protect him and give him a home
C.the baby goose may be in danger without help
D.the writer’s dad loves to play with the baby goose
26.The best title for the passage should be ________.
A.A Dad-Trained Goose B.My Love for Nature
C.My Goose Returned Home D.A Friendly Goose

Cats love fish, but they hate water—these two commonly believed ideas seem to contradict (与……矛盾) each other. But do cats really hate water?
Although furry cats at home can enjoy fish while staying clean and dry, wild cats are willing to get their paws wet to catch a tasty treat. This shows that it is a mistake to believe that all cats hate water, says Wailani Sung, a veterinary behaviorist (动物行为学家) from California. She explains that each cat is different—some cats like water, while others don’t. This is similar to dogs, according to Carlo Siracusa, another veterinary behaviorist. He points out that though many dogs like water, some dogs dislike water, just like cats.
One reason why people think cats dislike water is that most pet cats live indoors, while dogs are often taken outside. This gives dogs more chances to get used to water. Another reason is that most pet dogs are regularly washed, but cats usually clean themselves with their tongues—no water needed.
Though cats may avoid water, they have good reasons for doing so. Cats have special hairs on their bodies that help them feel the world around them, and getting these hairs wet may disturb (干扰) how they sense the environment. Wet fur can also make cats feel cold, as their fur helps keep them warm by trapping (锁住) air.
Cats, as prey animals, also avoid situations that seem dangerous or unpredictable. Even though they are skilled hunters, they can be vulnerable to other animals. This makes them uncomfortable in situations where they feel unsafe. Siracusa explains that cats usually dislike new things they cannot control. Being in water could be one of these things.
Since cats can clean themselves with their tongues, there is usually no need to worry if your cat avoids water. Healthy cats can take care of their own fur. Siracusa suggests that if you want to wash your cat, you should let them get used to water slowly, so the cat feels safe during the process.
House cats may need more encouragement to drink water. Over time, cats get used to getting most of their water from the food they eat, rather than having to find it in the dry environments in which they grow up. Siracusa suggests providing several water bowls around the house, with at least one placed away from the feeding area.
Using water to punish cats for bad behavior is not a good idea, no matter how the animal feels about water. Sung explains that our reaction is often too late for cats to understand, which can lead them to feel scared of their owners. Instead, Sung advises people to use positive ways like a reward.
27.Why does the writer mention dogs in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain why cats tend to avoid water more often than dogs in everyday life.
B.To show animals of the same type can have different feelings towards water.
C.To suggest that dogs are usually given more chances to get used to water.
D.To tell that cats and dogs have some cleaning habits in common.
28.What does the phrase “be vulnerable to” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Be greatly supported by. B.Be deeply respected by.
C.Be easily harmed by. D.Be widely hated by.
29.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Owners should let their cats get used to water quickly to feel safe.
B.Owners can improve cats’ behavior by punishing them with water.
C.Cats should depend on drinking water instead of getting it from their food.
D.Cats may avoid water because getting wet makes it hard for them to stay warm.
根据“He points out that though many dogs like water, some dogs dislike water, just like cats.”可知,作者提及狗是为了说明同一类动物对水可能有不同的感受。故选B。
28.词句猜测题。根据“Even though they are skilled hunters, they can be vulnerable to other animals. This makes them uncomfortable in situations where they feel unsafe.”可知,即使猫是熟练的捕猎者,在感觉不安全的情况下仍会不舒服,说明它们可能容易受到其他动物的伤害。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据“Wet fur can also make cats feel cold, as their fur helps keep them warm by trapping air.”可知,猫可能会避开水,因为湿毛发会让它们难以保持温暖。故选D。
D
In parts of Africa, people communicate with a wild bird—the greater honeyguide—in order to locate bee nests and harvest their stores of honey. It’s a rare example of cooperation (合作) between humans and wild animals. Brian Wood and Claire Spottiswoode were lead authors on a study about how this valuable partnership is maintained and how it changes in different cultures.
“Our study proves the bird’s ability to learn specific voiced signals that are traditionally used by different honey-hunting communities. This helps people and birds work together in ways that are beneficial for both,” Wood said. “Honeyguides seem to know the landscape well. They know the location of bee nests and then share with people,” Spottiswoode said. “People are eager for the bird’s help.” The honeyguides also benefit from locating the nests: They eat the leftover honey.
Spottiswoode and Wood’s study was done with the Hadza community in Tanzania and the Yao community of northern Mozambique. Before this study, they had already found that the two groups use different ways to attract honeyguides. When a Hadza person wants to work with a honeyguide, they make a whistle (口哨) sound in Mozambique, Yao people do this by making a “Brr!...” sound first, then a “…Hmm!” sound.
Using mathematical models and audio (音频) playback experiments, the team studied these signals. In the experiment, researchers played the same set of recorded sounds to honeyguides in Tanzania and Mozambique. Through this experiment, the researchers wanted to know whether the honeyguides could recognize and prefer the special sounds used by local honey-hunters, or the birds were just naturally attracted to all such sounds.
The honeyguides in Tanzania were over three times more likely to cooperate when hearing the calls of local Hadza people than the calls of “foreign” Yao. The honeyguides in Mozambique were almost twice as likely to cooperate when hearing the local Yao call, compared to the “foreign” Hadza whistles.
The study shows that differences in honeyguide-attracting signals are not random (随机的) but have a practical reason. While honey-hunting, both the Hadza and Yao come across mammals (哺乳动物), but only the Hadza hunt them, using bows and arrows. The Hadza’s hunting might explain the less noticeable whistles they use. Hadza hunters explain that they can avoid being found by their prey (猎物) because their whistles “sound like birds.” However, the signal the Yao use to communicate with the honeyguide can help scare off animals they find dangerous.
30.By cooperating with honey-hunting communities, honeyguides can ________.
A.recognize hunters’ whistle B.locate bee nests easier
C.have more food D.become familiar with the landscape
31.Why did the researchers use the same recorded sounds?
A.To study their mathematical models.
B.To check if they are a natural preference.
C.To see if they increase birds’ ability to find honey.
D.To teach honey-hunting communities how to give signals.
32.What can we learn from Spottiswoode and Wood’s study?
A.The honeyguides prefer calls from the local people.
B.The human-bird relationship can change with new signals.
C.The Yao community hunts animals while looking for bee nests.
D.The signals from the Hadza were more attractive to honeyguides.
33.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How mammals react to different signals.
B.How signals connect with hunting activity.
C.How hunting skills are used to scare off animals.
D.How whistles help honeyguides to find bee nests.
【答案】30.C 31.B 32.A 33.B
【导语】本文讲述了在非洲部分地区,人们与导蜜鸟合作寻找蜂巢和采集蜂蜜的故事,以及研究人员通过实验研究这种合作如何在不同文化中维持和变化。
【详解】30.细节理解题。根据“The honeyguides also benefit from locating the nests: They eat the leftover honey.”可知,导蜜鸟通过合作可以吃到剩余的蜂蜜,从而获得更多食物。故选C。
31.细节理解题。根据“Through this experiment, the researchers wanted to know whether the honeyguides could recognize and prefer the special sounds used by local honey-hunters, or the birds were just naturally attracted to all such sounds.”可知,研究人员想确认导蜜鸟是能识别并偏好当地捕蜜者使用的声音,还是天生就被所有这类声音吸引。故选B。
32.细节理解题。根据“The honeyguides in Tanzania were over three times more likely to cooperate when hearing the calls of local Hadza people than the calls of ‘foreign’ Yao. The honeyguides in Mozambique were almost twice as likely to cooperate when hearing the local Yao call, compared to the ‘foreign’ Hadza whistles.” 故选A。
33.主旨大意题。根据“The study shows that differences in honeyguide-attracting signals are not random (随机的) but have a practical reason.”

Have you heard about animal cafés? In many zoos, you can only see the animals in cages. However, it will be easy for you to pet some cute animals in an animal café. It’s a place where you can play with animals while enjoying the food and drinks.
Cat cafés are the most popular and have been around for the longest. When you spend time with the cats, you can either interact with them or just take it easy while reading a book. The insides of many cafés are like regular houses, letting you relax as if you were at a friend’s house or even your own home. To attract more visitors, the owners of the cafés also look after other animals such as dogs, rabbits and ducks.
“Because of limited living space and busy work schedules, many young people are now unable to raise pets themselves. The pet s here satisfy their needs.” said Duan Mu, the owner of a café. Up to February 2024, there were more than 4,000 animal cafés in China.
Animal cafés can be mainly divided into two modes (模式). The first mode raises animals in the café and is usually welcomed by customers who don’t have pets. These places charge admission (收费). The second mode simply allows pets to visit and enjoy coffee time with their owners. There is no admission charge. But the customers need to order drinks and snacks if they stay in an animal café with their own pets. “I prefer to choose a café that allows me to bring along my own cat.” Yu Miao, a 30-year-old cat owner said.
Pets are the highlight of animal cafés, but they can also present trouble. Some doctors remind the probable hygiene-related (卫生相关的) food problems caused by animals. Many café owners also say that there are sometimes incidents of animals biting or scratching (抓伤) customers. It is important not to run after animals or try to pick them up by force. You are not allowed to use your camera flash when taking pictures, either.

Li Hua
【答案】例文
Yours,
Li Hua

I’m excited today. That’s because my best childhood friend Molly came back home late last night. I haven’t seen her in FOUR years!
I still remember the day Molly came to the world. It was March 20th, 2016—about two years after me. Molly was so 13 that she soon became one of the stars here at Kunming Zoo. There was always a large 14 of visitors outside our playground, but most of these people were coming to see her only.
Molly and I played together every day until one evening in April 2018 when she told me she would go to a remote (遥远的) place. The next morning, I found her cage 15 . The zookeepers told me that Molly was being sent to a zoo in Henan. It was the 16 day of my life—we hadn’t even said goodbye to each other. I have never stopped 17 her since that day. “Will she have difficulty getting used to the northern climate? Will she continue to be treated well?” I thought. Nobody could help answer these questions.
One day, I heard from several zoo visitors that Molly had been trained to perform acrobatics (杂技) and carry tourists around on her back. The handlers (驯兽员) forced her to learn tricks. The news 18 shocked me. How I wished this was not true! Although I also heard that many people had been asking the government to save Molly, I still couldn’t 19 worrying about my friend.
I feel lucky that I have been taken good care of. In many other zoos, however, elephant shows are common while the living conditions are awful. As I grew up, I slowly realized the severity (严重性) of this problem. Every year on August 12th—World Elephant Day—people call for better protection for us. As an elephant, I think this is not 20 .

I wish there were an Elephant Day every month.

34.What is an animal café?
35.Why do the owners of the cat cafés also look after other animals?
36.What do the customers need to do if they stay in an animal café with their own pets?
37.Would you like to go to an animal café? Why or why not? (Give at least 2 reasons.)
