“Listen! That’s a magpie (喜鹊) singing,” said Xu Keyi. She is a wildlife photographer. She can tell different bird species (物种) just by their calls.
Xu, 37 years old, loved taking pictures of animals when she was young. She always dreamed of traveling around the world with a camera.
After graduation, she worked as a reporter. But her life changed during a trip to Antarctica (南极洲). She saw penguin parents bravely protecting their babies. She was deeply moved by them and that moment made her idea of protecting animals even stronger.

Xu hopes her photos can make more people care about our planet. She said, “Often, we only know about a species when it has already died out. It’s too late then.
In 2018, Xu made her first big decision—leaving her job to become a full-time wildlife photographer. She’s been to many places. But she is especially interested in animals like the snow leopard and the green peafowl (孔雀).
In 2024, in Yunnan, Xu climbed a mountain early in the morning to take pictures of the hard-to-find green peafowl. After facing hours of rain and sweltering heat (闷热), as the sun came out in the afternoon, she finally made it. She said it was a really wonderful moment.
Xu hopes her photos can make more people care about our planet. She said, “Often, we only know about a species when it has already died out. It’s too late then. We should protect them.” She believes the new list of China’s protected wild animals will help people learn more about wildlife protection and then they will make people take action from now on. “There are also many real efforts that everyone can easily make in daily life, which include using less plastic,” Xu said.
Xu continues to look for nature’s wonders, encouraging others. Her works have become a voice, calling on us to value and protect wildlife before it’s gone.
