It all started when then 16-year-old Boyan Slat was going scuba diving in Greece and was surprised to see more plastic than fish. The question“Why don't we just clean it up?”stayed in his mind, and led him to devote his high school science project to solving the problem.
After a year of experimenting,Boyan came up with the idea of using the ocean currents to his advantage, and letting them be the driving force behind catching and collecting the plastic.Instead of going after the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.
Initially, his idea did not gain attention. He decided to quit his studies and founded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 euros of savings as a starting capital.
Then one night in March 2013,things changed. He spoke at TEDx about this project. The TEDx video spread among hundreds of thousands of people. In a matter of days,an initial team was built, and it raised the first USD 90,000.The project took off.
Their early models had their share of failures—plastic slipping through the net, parts breaking off in the ocean. But they kept at it.In 2019,System 001/B finally worked. Then came System 002,which in 2021 gathered 20,000 pounds of ocean waste. Now they launched the Interceptor:a solar-powered system designed to catch plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. So far,Interceptors have been used in Indonesia,Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and the United States—with more on the way.
Boyan Slat's journey is a powerful reminder that innovation, passion, and determination can lead to significant change. His work of cleaning up the oceans has made a lasting impact on the world and serves as an inspiration for others to take action on environmental issues.

In sub-Saharan Africa, most children attend schools where lessons are not taught in their mother tongue, but a language that is more international. Some believe this system prepares kids for a successful future.Others say that teaching in an unfamiliar language can obviously hamper learning results.
Senegal is an example of an African nation where students learn to read—not in a language they speak at home, but in French.Forcing children to learn in French cannot actually be having a positive effect on their school performance.According to the Education Center, the youth's ability to read and write is lower than the average of countries with similar economies. In addition, more than half of Senegal's secondary school-age children no longer attend school.
Such worries have led schools in some countries to begin teaching in local languages. But not everyone agrees with the efforts.Barbara Trudell, the director of an organization for language development, says that preferring local languages can be difficult to understand. That's because there might be more opportunities for speakers of international languages.Others have mixed feelings.Meissa Dieng,a school headmaster, accepts the importance of international languages. But he's concerned about how well children adapt to the challenges of doing schoolwork in a language they do not speak at home.Chris Darby,an education expert says that parents often have strong views on teaching in international languages. But many of them finally support it.“Parents are very eager,I think, for children's success,”says Darby.
Many organizations have been testing two-language teaching programs in primary schools. In these programs, children learn to speak French and build learning skills in local languages. The local language is later used as a base to learn and read in French.Program Director Awa Ka Dia hopes the good results will encourage the local governments to fund the programs,so they could cover more areas.
28.What does the underlined word“hamper”mean in paragraph 1?
A.Harm. B.Improve. C.Achieve. D.Confuse.
29.What might be the main reason for the students'giving up going to school in Senegal?
A.Inability to learn in French . B.Too much stress from parents.
C.Unwillingness to read and write. D.Starting schooling too late.
30.What is Barbara Trudell's attitude to teaching in international languages?
A.Unsupportive. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
31.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.Pupils find it difficult to learn French. B.French helps to improve learning skills.
C.The programs are considered hopeful. D.Local governments organize the programs.

Here is a surprising and important fact:Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds funny. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(极度疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素)and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would have no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists find that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J.A.Hadfield,says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.”Dr.Brill,a famous American scientist, goes even further. He says,“One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired?Joy?Satisfaction? No!Boredom, anger, anxiety, tenseness,
worry, and a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
32.What did the scientists discover a few years ago?
A.We could hardly find fatigue toxins in a laborer's blood.
B.Albert Einstein didn't feel worn out after a day's work.
C.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
D.The brain could work for many hours without tiredness.
33.In the author's opinion, what's the main reason for sitting workers feeling tired?
A.Difficult work. B.Endless tasks. C.Physical labor. D.Unpleasant emotions.
34.What's the best title of this passage?
A.Have Some Good Food B.Exercise Regularly
C.The Real Cause of Fatigue D.DiscoverFatigue Toxins
35.Which topic will be discussed in the following part of the passage?
A.How to take away nervousness. B.How to work well and swiftly.
C.How to deal with hard work. D.How to get much satisfaction.
答案:32.D 33.D 34.C 35.A
emotional adj.情绪的 emotion n.情绪 satisfaction n.满足,满意
熟词生义:labor 熟义:n.劳动;工人,劳动力 生义:v.干苦力活
难句分析:
原句:To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!
分析:that引导宾语从句,作discovered的宾语,其中主语为blood,谓语为shows,passing through the brain是动词-ing形式短语作后置定语,修饰blood,when it is active为时间状语从句。
根据最后一段中的“Boredom,anger,anxiety,tenseness,worry,and a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.”可知,让坐着工作的人感到疲劳的是一些不愉快的情绪。故选D。
34.主旨大意题。文章结构如下:
段落
内容
Para.1—Para.2
科学家发现单纯的脑力劳动不会使人疲劳,大脑可高效工作很久且不知疲倦
Para.3—Para.4
根据最后一段最后一句“We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.”可知,我们感到疲劳是因为我们的情绪在体内产生了紧张。由此可推知,文章接下来的部分将讨论如何消除紧张这一话题。故选A。

When I was young at school,I loved talking, which was not always appreciated by Mr.Smith.Mr.Smith was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5.5 feet, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsey(像马的)look.Whenever he got upset,he would lower his head and look at you
over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking.I didn't realize he had stopped teaching, staring straight at me.“Tom,I would like to see you after school.”Later,Mr.Smith explained in a low,but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a 1000-word essay(文章)on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well,I met my deadline(最后期限).I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of praise from him.The next day in class, however,he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper.“Go back and rewrite,”he said.“Remember, each paragraph is supposed to begin with a topic sentence.”When
he gave my paper back a second time,he corrected the grammar.The third time,the spelling.The fourth time,it was punctuation.The fifth,it wasn't neat(整洁的)enough.I was sick!

27.What can be learned from Boyan Slat's story?
A.Better late than never. B.All roads lead to Rome.

Mr.Smith,my 10-grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr.Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
The sixth time,I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper,he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that,I put the whole thing out of my mind.

[2026广东深圳实验学校月考]
24.What inspired Boyan Slat to deal with plastic problems?
A.A high school science project. B.An unpleasant diving experience.
C.A cleanup research program. D.An experiment on ocean currents.

C.Trapping trash using ocean currents. D.Going after plastic with machines.
26.What was the turning point in The Ocean Cleanup?
A.The donated 300 euros to the project. B.Boyan's presentation at TE Dx.
C.The successful launch of the Interceptor. D.Boyan's decision to drop out of school.
27.What can be learned from Boyan Slat's story?
A.Better late than never. B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.A good beginning is half done. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.Unwillingness to read and write. D.Starting schooling too late.

A.Unsupportive. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
31.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

Mr.Smith,my 10-grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr.Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
The sixth time,I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper,he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that,I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
One morning after three weeks,Mr.Smith came into the class happily._________________________________
