Dear Peter,
I’m writing to turn to you for advice, as I’m troubled by a quarrel with my best friend.
Last week, we planned to study together after school. However, I forgot our appointment because of extra schoolwork and didn’t inform him in time. He felt upset and thought I didn’t value our friendship. Now he refuses to talk to me, and I feel really regretful and lonely.I have no idea how to fix our relationship. Could you offer me some practical suggestions?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
So I talked back to her. “Tae kwon do teaches us not only physical skills but also kindness and encouragement,” I explained gently. “The new student was totally discouraged and helpless. A little comfort won’t break any rules but give her the courage to keep going.” My partner fell silent for a while. She finally realized that strict self-discipline was not the only rule of this sport, and warmth was also indispensable in training. We made up soon and understood each other better.
A year later, during the training break, the student came close to me with good news. She told me proudly that she had kept practicing and finally got her red belt. She thanked me sincerely for my encouragement that day, adding that my words had always inspired her to overcome difficulties. Looking at her confident and brave smile, I felt a strong sense of warmth and achievement. It made me realize that a small kindness can light up others’ journey.

A recent survey shows that increasing numbers of British people choose a greener lifestyle as climate change becomes more serious. Among the participants, 79% said they live in a more environmentally friendly way than ten years ago.
The survey interviewed 2,000 British citizens. Four fifths of them believe they are living greener lives than ten years before. 61% think they have the duty to protect the environment, while 70% plan to keep changing daily habits to cut pollution.
What actions do they take? Reusing goods, eating less meat and refusing disposable plastic products are the most popular choices. However, the survey also finds most people fail to know which actions matter most to environmental protection.
For example, 53% of participants did not know private cars produce more carbon than trains. Only 19% try to travel by train more often to cut pollution.
It is worth noticing that the survey only covers 2,000 people. Even so, the trend of green living is clear. Official data shows reuse rates rose in England from 2010 to 2019. Another research found people ate less meat between 2012 and 2018.
We cannot be too optimistic — lots of work remains to fight climate change. Still, every small change towards eco-friendly living is encouraging news.

Drive 200 kilometers away from Khartoum, and you will find the ancient Meroe pyramids lying in Sudan’s desert, looking like a wonderful mirage. Unlike Egypt’s pyramids crowded with tourists, this place stays quiet. Northern Sudan once belonged to ancient Egyptian rulers, which explains why so many amazing pyramids and ancient temples stand here.
People argue about the age of the pyramids. The Sudanese government believes these pyramids are older than those in Egypt, while experts from other countries hold different opinions.
Long ago, Meroe served as the capital of the Kingdom of Kush under the Nubian Dynasty. Pyramids here are divided into three groups. Compared with Egyptian pyramids, they have smaller bases and much steeper sides. Few people know Northern Sudan has around 200 pyramids and temples — more than Egypt. These pyramids were built as tombs for ancient Nubian kings.
If you walk inside, wall paintings record important events during kings’ rules. Considering their long history and remote location, it is surprising that most buildings remain complete. Careful visitors may find some pyramids lose their top parts. Back in the 1880s, an Italian explorer destroyed parts of the pyramids when searching for treasure.
Now, UNESCO adds the Meroe pyramids to the World Heritage List.
32. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To show the popularity of Egyptian pyramids.
B. To introduce and lead in the topic of Meroe pyramids.
C. To compare different ancient buildings.
D. To describe the scenery of Sudan’s desert.
33. What is different about Meroe pyramids compared with Egyptian ones?
A. They have smaller bases and steeper sides.
B. They are taller and more famous.
C. They are built on mountain tops.
D. They have a longer history for sure.
34. Why are some Meroe pyramids incomplete?
A. Due to long-term rain erosion.
B. Because of historical man-made damage.
C. For the need of treasure protection.
D. Owing to natural desert storms.
35. Which title best suits the passage?
A. The Ancient Kingdom of Kush
B. The Mysterious Meroe Pyramids in Sudan
C. Arguments Over Pyramids’ History
D. World Heritage Sites in Africa

When I was in my late twenties, I learned tae kwon do. My friends were shocked, and I also surprised myself. I moved from white belt to yellow, green and finally blue belt.
Friday evenings were training time. I practiced with a woman of similar build. We circled each other and practiced kicks and punches without real contact. Sometimes loud shouts filled the training room when someone made attacks. Shouting was part of training. It helped us focus, gather energy and scare competitors.
Tae kwon do has strict rules. Bow before entering. Bow to your partner. No shoes. No talking. Most importantly, focus on yourself.
One evening, I noticed a new student feeling upset. She dared not fight back and could hardly follow the steps. She looked scared. Before class ended, she rushed out. I stopped training, bowed to my partner and ran after her. I found her sitting on the floor of the changing room, crying. “It is too difficult,” she sobbed. “I can’t make it.”
“It’s all right,” I comforted her. “Let your feelings out. You will make progress. Sometimes things we fear most finally become what we love.” I knew training could bring strong feelings, and many women feel nervous learning tae kwon do.
The student left, and I packed my things. After class, my training partner walked towards me. I thought she would praise me. Instead, she criticized me. “Mind your own business,” she said. “Don’t disturb her next time.” I felt shocked and disagreed with her opinion.
So I talked back to her.

A year later, during the training break, the student came close to me with good news.

Compared with Egyptian pyramids, they have smaller bases and much steeper sides.”
原文定位第四段“Back in the 1880s, an Italian explorer destroyed parts of the pyramids when searching for treasure.”,属于人为历史破坏。

________________________________________________________________________
A year later, during the training break, the student came close to me with good news.
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

Nowadays, many parents hope to raise children with patience, but losing temper happens now and then. A popular short video recently warmed lots of viewers.
In the video, a young mother shouted angrily at her teenage son for making a mess in the kitchen. Soon after she finished scolding him, she calmed down quickly. She realized she treated her kid too strictly. Instead of keeping silent, she decided to make dumplings together with her son. During the warm time, they talked patiently and solved their misunderstanding.
After watching the video, I thought a lot. Like many parents, I often focus on children’s mistakes and ignore their feelings.
28. How does the writer support the survey results?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By explaining climate change.
C. By analyzing main reasons.
D. By sharing personal experience.
29. What do most British people do to protect the environment?
A. They travel by train daily.
B. They reuse items and reduce meat intake.
C. They completely stop using plastics.
D. They change all living habits.
30. What is a problem shown by the survey?
A. Few people want to live green lives.
B. No official data supports green trends.
C. Many people lack professional environmental knowledge.
D. People refuse to cut carbon pollution.
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards British green living?
A. Doubtful.
B. Uninterested.
C. Strictly negative.
D. Cautiously hopeful.
