Less Crowds, More Beauty
The Grand Canyon welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2024. But there is somewhere equally breathtaking with far fewer crowds. It’s called Coconino National Forest, stretching across nearly 2 million acres between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
How to Get There
Getting there is easy. Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and drive 1.5 hours north via Interstate 17. Or fly to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, served by American Airlines with daily flights from Phoenix, Dallas, and Los Angeles. From there, the forest is just a 20-minute drive.
About the Forest
Named after the Cohonina people, the forest was designated a national forest by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. Today, its three districts protect 10 wilderness areas home to elk, mule deer, mountain lions, and bobcats.
Hiking Information
Trails: 482 trails extending hundreds of miles
Pass Required:
1. Red Rock Pass: $5 per day (for individuals only)
2. All-Inclusive Annual Pass: $80 (for individuals and families)
Top Trails:
Devil’s Bridge Trail: 3.9-mile out-and-back hike to a huge sandstone arch.
Kachina Peaks Trail: 9.6-mile hike to Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), Arizona’s highest point. Grand Canyon view available on clear days from Humphreys Peak.

The owner of a broken blender (搅拌器) set it on the table. The light went on, but the unit wouldn’t work. Retired engineer Dean Gallea looked it over and went from removing, sanding and testing the motor to replacing the motor’s thermal fuse (保险丝).
“I put the thing back together and, it worked fine,” he says modestly. All in a volunteer’s day’s work at Repair Café, where skilled volunteers help people fix their belongings for free.
People brought in broken clocks, fans, lamps, clothing, appliances, toys, bicycles, knives, wooden objects — hoping that the 26 “fixers” on-site could work their magic.
“I brought all the things that meant a lot to me,” Jennifer Kohl, who was being helped at the sewing table, says, adding that she especially loved the interaction between the two volunteers, Christl Mageras and Sarah French. “They were going back and forth advising each other, helping each other,” Kohl recalls. Even more striking to Kohl was the teaching nature of these experts.
“Christl said, ‘Come here, sit next to me, I’ll show you this,’ and then she had me stitch (缝) one of my pillows and coached me through it,” Kohl says. “She showed me her skills.”
Some repair requests may beg the question “Why bother?” But the items’ owners have their reasons. Terry Atkinson didn’t have the heart to throw away a Nitey Lite lamp that had been on her daughter’s nightstand for 24 years, a Christmas present from her beloved grandfather. The repair worked — the Nitey Lite shines bright again. Atkinson couldn’t wait to show her daughter. “Carlee is very emotional,” said Atkinson. “I thought she’ll cry.”
“Repair Cafés are the whole package,” says Suzie Fromer, who works with 70 area Repair Café groups. “The drama of whether an item can be saved, the excitement of a challenging fix and the satisfaction of a good save, all mixed up with the twin joys of catching up with old friends while also making new ones. Plus — snacks. Five out of five would recommend.”
24.What does the first paragraph mainly describe?
A.A broken blender. B.A repair process.
C.A retired engineer. D.A volunteer organization.
25.What can we learn from the things brought in to repair?
A.People prefer old items to new ones.
B.The fixers have various gifts and skills.
C.Repair Café is the only place to choose.
D.Most broken items are electronic objects.
26.Which of the following agrees with the teaching nature of the fixers?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Great minds think alike.
C.Teach someone how to fish. D.Actions speak louder than words.
27.How does Suzie Fromer feel about Repair Café?
A.Amazing. B.Costly. C.Messy. D.Challenging.
C
American consumers are projected to spend roughly $960 billion this holiday season. But retailers (零售商) expect returns to make up almost 20 percent of those sales. “That return wave appears mainly because people tend to make a lot of mistakes when giving presents,” says Julian Givi, a marketing expert and psychologist who has been studying gifting practices.
Giving good gifts may not seem like a research-worthy topic. But positive gift exchanges can help businesses struggling to deal with a flood of returns as well as improve social relationships. Most importantly, giving better gifts could take pressure off the environment. According to one report, in 2020, some 2.6 million tons of returned products in the United States ended up in a landfill
Most of these studies were also done in the U.S. and U.K. The studies centered on the cultural factor. For example, we often give the gifts around the holidays. But what we find is that recipients (接受者) actually prefer meaningful gifts more than what givers expect. But if you are in a culture where you are going to get laughed at for giving a meaningful gift, then I would say you won’t give a similar gift. However, the limitation on this body of research work is that it’s focused on adults. It’s a lot easier to get permission to do research on people who are 18 and older.
Gift givers tend to focus on that “aha” moment, the moment when the outer packaging of the gift is opened. Recipients focus more on long-term functions. Research shows that people are misguided on how much surprise is important. However, recipients actually like things that they request better.
It had been thought that gift givers simply had a thirst to please recipients. Actually, people often give gifts that satisfy their own demands rather than the demands of recipients. In other words, people would be a whole lot better at giving gifts if they could just get their sense of their own worth out of the way. Therefore, a better gift giver should take what recipients really want into consideration.
28.What does the author think is the most important significance of giving better gifts?
A.Promoting products. B.Improving social relationships.
C.Reducing environmental harm. D.Bettering communication skills.
29.How does the author explain the cultural factor of giving gifts?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples.
C.By asking questions. D.By making comparisons.
30.What does the underlined word “aha” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Annoying. B.Disappointing. C.Amazing. D.Moving.
31.What’s the advice for a better gift giver?
A.Sending all-in-one gifts. B.Meeting gift givers’ demands.
C.Buying high quality presents. D.Stressing recipients’ preference.
D
David Uttal, a scientist at Northwestern University, has always been poor at finding his way. At 13, he got lost on a Boy Scout hike for two and a half days. The world is full of people like Uttal — and their opposites, the folks who always seem to know exactly where they are and how to get where they want to go.
These differences are obvious but explaining them has proved challenging. Now, research using virtual reality suggests that to some extent, navigational (导航的) skills are shaped by upbringing.
A 2020 study highlighted this. The researchers compared the performance of more than 2,600 twins as they navigated through a virtual environment to test whether navigational ability runs in families. It does, they found — but only modestly. Instead, the biggest contributor to people’s performance was what geneticists call “nonshared environmental factors” — the unique experiences each person accumulates as their life unfolds. Good navigators, it appears, are mostly made, not born.
Another large-scale experiment provided further insight. Researchers developed a smartphone game, “Sea Hero Quest”, in which players navigate through a virtual environment to locate checkpoints. Based on data from nearly four million players worldwide, they discovered that cultural factors were linked to way-finding skills. People from Nordic countries, where the navigation sport of orienteering is popular, performed slightly better.
Results like these suggest that life experience may be one of the biggest determinants of navigational ability. Indeed, experience may even underlie one of the most consistent findings in navigation: men tend to perform better than women. It turns out that gender gap is more a question of culture and experience than of born ability. Nordic countries, for example, where gender equality is greatest, show almost no gender difference in navigation. In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural restrictions on exploring their environment.
To Uttal, these findings carry an optimistic implication. “The good news is that navigation is trainable,” he notes, “It’s never too late to become a better navigator. You just need to give yourself opportunities to explore and pay attention to your surroundings.”
32.What did the 2020 study on twins reveal about navigational ability?
A.It is largely determined by genes. B.It remains constant in a person’s life.
C.It varies little among individuals. D.It is learned through experience.
33.How was the “Sea Hero Quest” experiment conducted?
A.By testing brain activity during play.
B.By analyzing smartphone game data.
C.By comparing the Nordics with others.
D.By observing how players navigate.
34.Why do men often outperform women in navigation?
A.Men benefit from practicing sports.
B.Women lack interest in doing so.
C.Men possess stronger space memory.
D.Women have fewer chances to explore.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What Can “Sea Hero Quest” Teach Us?
B.How Does VR Improve Navigational Skills?
C.Why Do Some People Always Get Lost?
D.Who Are Better Navigators: Men or Women?
Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, spend more time at the gym or learn a language, turning bad habits into good ones is all about self-control. Some of us have more than others. And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. 36
Michael Inzlicht is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a self-control researcher. He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. 37 When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. Inzlicht says that these types of individuals generally have what’s called “trait self-control” meaning it’s an aspect of their personality.
When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. 38 A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. 39
40 Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.
A.However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it.
B.Another tip for success, says Inzlicht, is making gradual steps.
C.Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out.
D.They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort.
E.Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now.
F.Don’t be afraid of frustration, since it is necessary for your improvement.
G.Actually, self-control improvement can bring about benefits to all individuals.

Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Fred asked. “Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas,” Belle answered excitedly.
“What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room. “Mum, we are wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day,” Belle said. “Oh, I am surprised you kids can remember the day! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully,” Mum said.
“That would be great!” said Belle and Fred together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Belle and Fred started doing their homework. But soon Fred noticed Belle deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Fred, I am thinking that our parents do everything for us but they demand nothing from us. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Belle replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades,” Fred said.
The next day, all three of them, Belle, Fred and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. W: Of course, I did. But the sales refused to return my money. So I found the manager and told him about what had happened. He told me that as a rule, they would always return someone’s money or change another pair, but that wasn’t possible this time because they were on sale.
M: Oh, I can’t believe it.

【答案】17.B 18.A 19.C 20.C
Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly while you are trying to study? Or when your best friend does not wait for you after school? If you do, you need to take control of your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry with people can cause you to lose friends. Allen Ribet, an American high school teacher, has written a book to help you control your feelings. It tells you how to keep cool when bad things happen to you. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can never make them better. Getting angry is not a natural way to show your feelings. The book says, “All you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.” When a baby falls over, it only cries if people are watching it. Like a baby, you should get angry only if you are sure it is the right thing to do.

根据第一段中“The Grand Canyon welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2024. But there is somewhere equally breathtaking with far fewer crowds. It’s called Coconino National Forest.(大峡谷在2024年迎来了490万游客。但有一个同样令人叹为观止且人少得多的地方。它叫科科尼诺国家森林。)”可知,文章主要目的是介绍这个人少的景点。
22.细节理解题。 根据Pass Required中“Red Rock Pass: $5 per day(for individuals only)(红石通行证:每天5美元,仅限个人)”和“All-Inclusive Annual Pass: $80 (for individuals and families)(全包年票:80美元,适用于个人和家庭)”可知,四口之家徒步3天:若买红石通行证,需4人×3天=12张,共12×5=60美元;若买全包年票需80美元。
B
【答案】24.B 25.B 26.C 27.A
根据第一段“The owner of a broken blender (搅拌器) set it on the table. The light went on, but the unit wouldn’t work. Retired engineer Dean Gallea looked it over and went from removing, sanding and testing the motor to replacing the motor’s thermal fuse(保险丝). (一台损坏的搅拌机的主人把它放在桌上,机器灯能亮但无法运转。退休工程师Dean Gallea仔细检查了它,从拆卸、打磨、测试电机到更换电机的热保险丝。)”可知,第一段完整描述了修理一台搅拌机的全过程。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“People brought in broken clocks, fans, lamps, clothing, appliances, toys, bicycles, knives, wooden objects — hoping that the 26 “fixers” on-site could work their magic.(人们带来坏掉的钟表、风扇、灯具、衣物、家电、玩具、自行车、刀具、木制品,寄希望于现场 26 名修理能手施展手艺修好物品。)”
根据第五段中的“‘Christl said, “Come here, sit next to me, I’ll show you this,” and then she had me stitch (缝) one of my pillows and coached me through it,’ Kohl says. ‘She showed me her skills.’(Christl说:‘过来,坐在我旁边,我教你这个,’然后她让我缝一个枕头,并指导我完成整个过程。她向我展示了她的技能。)”可知,维修员不仅帮人修好东西,还手把手教物主学会修理技能。C选项“Teach someone how to fish(授人以鱼不如授人以渔)”准确概括了这一“传授技能”的教学本质。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Repair Cafés are the whole package,” says Suzie Fromer, who works with 70 area Repair Café groups. “The drama of whether an item can be saved, the excitement of a challenging fix and the satisfaction of a good save, all mixed up with the twin joys of catching up with old friends while also making new ones. Plus — snacks. Five out of five would recommend.”(负责当地 70 家修理咖啡馆团体的苏西・弗罗默表示:“修理咖啡馆一应俱全,既有能否修好物品的悬念、攻克难题的兴奋感、成功修复的成就感,还能一边和老友叙旧一边结交新朋友,现场还有点心。满分五分我给五分,强烈推荐。”)” 可知苏西对修理咖啡馆评价极高,认为它十分棒、令人赞叹。
根据第二段的句子“Most importantly, giving better gifts could take pressure off the environment. (最重要的是,送更好的礼物可以减轻环境压力。)”可知,作者认为改善送礼行为的首要意义是减少对环境的伤害。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段的句子“For example, we often give the gifts around the holidays. But what we find is that recipients (接受者) actually prefer meaningful gifts more than what givers expect. (例如,我们通常在节日期间送礼。但我们发现,实际上收礼者比送礼者预期的更偏爱有意义的礼物。)”可知,作者通过举例来解释送礼的文化因素。
30.词句猜测题。根据第四段的语境“Gift givers tend to focus on that ‘aha’ moment, the moment when the outer packaging of the gift is opened. (送礼者往往关注那种‘aha’时刻,也就是礼物外包装被打开的瞬间。)”和下文的“Research shows that people are misguided on how much surprise is important. (研究表明,人们在惊喜的重要性上被误导了。)”可知,礼物外包装被打开的瞬间肯定是人们感到惊喜的时刻,所以划线单词aha在这里表达的是惊喜、惊叹的情绪,与Amazing词义一致。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“Therefore, a better gift giver should take what recipients really want into consideration. (因此,一个更好的送礼者应该考虑收礼者真正想要的东西。)”可知,作者建议送礼者重视收礼者的偏好。

根据第三段中的“Instead, the biggest contributor to people’s performance was what geneticists call “nonshared environmental factors” — the unique experiences each person accumulates as their life unfolds. Good navigators, it appears, are mostly made, not born.(相反,影响人们表现的最大因素是遗传学家所称的“非共享环境因素”——即每个人在人生历程中积累的独特经验。看来,优秀的导航者大多是后天塑造的,而非天生的。)”可知,2020年的双胞胎研究揭示了导航能力主要是通过后天经验习得的。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Researchers developed a smartphone game, “Sea Hero Quest”, in which players navigate through a virtual environment to locate checkpoints. Based on data from nearly four million players worldwide, they discovered that cultural factors were linked to way-finding skills.(研究人员开发了一款手机游戏“Sea Hero Quest”,在游戏中玩家穿行虚拟环境来定位检查点。基于全球近四百万玩家的数据,他们发现文化因素与寻路能力相关。)”可知,该实验是通过分析智能手机游戏的数据进行的。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural restrictions on exploring their environment.(相比之下,在女性探索环境受到文化限制的地区,男性的导航能力远优于女性。)”
C选项“Why Do Some People Always Get Lost?(为什么有些人总是迷路?)”
【答案】36.E 37.D 38.A 39.C 40.B
36.前文“And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. (研究表明,自控能力强的人往往更快乐。但问题是,我们通常只在未来得到奖励)”指出自控能力强可以带来快乐,但这种快乐在未来才能得到,因此E项“Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now. (因此,我们不断地权衡是等待还是现在就拥有它)”符合语境,表明我们会纠结于是自控以得到未来的快乐,还是不自控现在就获得快乐,是前文矛盾的结果,承接前文。故选E。
37.前文“He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. (他说,具有讽刺意味的是,那些真正擅长自我控制的人并不需要练习自我控制)”指出擅长自控的人不需要练习自控,后文“When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. (当你喜欢并渴望一些对你更好的事情时,比如学习、努力工作或锻炼,你不必考虑去做)”用具体的例子说明这种自控可以自然发生,因此D项“They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort. (他们可以毫不费力地一直保持好习惯)”符合语境,说明这样的人可以轻松保持好习惯,是对前文的解释,后文是对其例证,选项中的They指代前文的those who are really good at it。故选D。
38.前文“When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. (说到提高自我控制能力,Inzlicht说,很难改变你与生俱来的性格)”指出提高自控力很困难,后文“A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. (大量的研究表明,你可以提高你想要改变的特定行为或你想要养成的习惯的自制力)”说明特定行为或习惯的自控力是可以提升的,因此A项“However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it. (然而,这并不意味着你对此无能为力)”符合语境,指出提高自控力也是有办法的,和前文构成转折,引出后文,其中的this指代前一句话。故选A。
39.前文“For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. (例如,Inzlicht说,当我们因为改变生活而得到报酬时,我们更有可能做出改变。有些健身房会向你收取一定数额的一年会员费,然后每次你来的时候都会返还你几美分)”指出报酬可以推动人做出改变,并举出健身房返还一小部分费用的例子,因此C项“Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out. (即使是少量的钱也能鼓励人们去锻炼)”符合语境,说明被返还的费用可以让人坚持锻炼,承接前文。故选C。
40.后文“Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.

My husband and I were on our flight to America. The cabin (机舱) was 41 for the films when shouts of “Wake up! Oh, help!” rang out. “Is there a doctor aboard?” No doctor wanted to hear these words while flying, but I still answered quickly.
I was out of my 42 and ran to see a frightened elderly woman holding the hand of her husband, who wasn’t 43 to her. His head was back, 44 closed. I did a quick examination: colour good, no evident pain, breathing 45 without effort. I sat down, still 46 his heartbeat, and asked the woman about her husband. Luckily, he had a 47 medical history and took no medicine. The couple had travelled to 48 their 60th wedding anniversary. It had been a good holiday, she explained, but 49 . Suddenly her husband opened his eyes, and asked, “What’s happened?” So I explained, “Your heartbeat isn’t quite right, and that may have 50 your unconsciousness (昏迷).”
Soon after, when I reported the whole situation to the 51 , he asked me, “We can put the plane down in 20 minutes in Gander, or 52 for two hours in Toronto. What do you want me to do, doc?” “Put it down,” I 53 . Although I don’t know for certain what resulted in the man’s trouble, the truth is, travel for 54 can be stressful, and there’s enormous potential for medical treatments.
Three weeks later, I received a thank-you note from the gentleman, who will 55 remain in good health for years to come. Seeing each patient getting well again is the best gift for a doctor.

Dear fellow students,
Nowadays, it is common that many students suffer from eye strain. They overuse their eyes due to long hours of studying or using digital devices.
This problem not only damages our eyesight but also lowers our focus in class. Worse still, it could even lead to potential long-term eye conditions.
To address this, we should take regular breaks during study, such as following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds and keep doing eye exercises daily. Outdoor activities also count. Let’s work together to protect our eyes for a healthier campus life.
Yours,

Fred and Belle were brother and sister. They were talking about the coming Father’s Day, “Belle, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Fred asked his sister Belle. “Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 16 this year.
Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蜡笔), Fred bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

Fred and Belle were both expecting the special day. Finally, when Father’s day came, both Fred and Belle came home from school quickly and started decorating the house. Fred cleaned the living room and continued with the decoration, putting up the colorful balloons and presenting the birthday cake. At the same time, Belle took out the family picture. They were about to practice singing the poem when the delicious smell came from the kitchen. Surely, it was Mom that prepared the big meal. French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite foods, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Fred and Belle stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Then Dad came in.
Fred and Belle were very excited to see their father. They cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” Hearing the words, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Fred, pointing at the decorations. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of the chicken soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Fred and Belle. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! The room was filled with happiness.

Fred and Belle were brother and sister. They were talking about the coming Father’s Day, “Belle, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Fred asked his sister Belle. “Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 16 this year.
Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蜡笔), Fred bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

Yours,
Li Hua
