When he arrived home, the beagles seemed relieved to be in a warm place. Katie welcomed them with open arms. She prepared a cozy corner for them with blankets and food. The beagles, Pepper and Cooper, wagged their tails gratefully. That night, as the snow continued to fall outside, they found comfort and safety in their new temporary home. Already having a family dog, Gus phoned a nearby animal welfare center the next day. The staff at the center promised to take in the beagles and find them suitable forever homes. Soon, they arrived to pick up Pepper and Cooper. Gus and Katie were a bit sad to see them go but knew it was for the best. As the beagles were led away, they looked back as if to say thank you. B Huang Yahui, a 40-year-old from Urumqi, Xinjiang, has been attracted by nature since childhood, a passion she developed in her 20s by taking part in adventurous outdoor activities. Then in 2011, she chanced upon a life-changing opportunity to volunteer with a research team led by Ma Ming, a professor at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. That brief experience helped shape her future career. Now, Huang is a full-time environmentalist of a nature preservation in Urumqi. Each year, she and her team cross Xinjiang’s forests and mountains, documenting wildlife—with a special focus on butterflies. Butterflies have a relatively simple body structure and are highly sensitive to slight climate changes. Therefore, changes in population structure, numbers and habits of butterflies can reflect regional climate changes. Huang said, “That’s the reason why I have developed a strong passion for butterflies.” However, due to the high diversity of butterfly species, relying only on scientific researchers for butterfly observation is insufficient. According to Ma, ecological preservation organizations play a vital role in establishing butterfly observation networks. Over the years, Huang’s team has actively contributed to this effort. Her team has recorded more than 200 butterfly species, providing important data to local authorities. Recently, Huang is working on a book about butterfly conservation that integrates (结合)the traditional culture of the 24 Chinese solar terms. “My goal is to help more people understand the importance of harmony between human and nature, and encourage efforts in protecting nature and biodiversity,” she said. 24.What inspired Huang’s environmental career? A.Her parents’ influence. B.The professor’s suggestion. C.A volunteer experience. D.Her passion for outdoor activities. 25.Why does Huang observe butterflies? A.Because they have high medical value. B.Because they have a simple body structure. C.Because they are a target for preservation efforts. D.Because they are an indicator of climate changes. 26.What do the underlined words “this effort” mean in paragraph 4? A.Identifying rare species in the wild. B.Cooperating with government officials. C.Creating systems to monitor butterfly. D.Studying regional variability of butterflies. 27.Which of the following words best describe Huang? A.Committed and responsible. B.Intelligent and adaptable. C.Observant and independent. D.Adventurous and pioneering. C It began with a low sound that seemed to shake directly through the soles of my shoes. Standing in the centre of the city, I watched as a large, mud-covered field was changed into a lively place of sound and light. For many, the typical image of a British festival is one of collective endurance — crowding together in rain-soaked tents and dealing with the unpredictable weather. Yet, as the first performer took the stage, those small discomforts disappeared. Belfast 2024 felt less like a series of scheduled concerts and more like a temporary utopia (乌托邦). In this brief window of time, the normal rules of social connection were paused. I found myself becoming temporary best friends with strangers over a shared appreciation for a local band I had never heard of before. There is a specific kind of electricity that ripples through a crowd of thousands when a familiar song begins to play. It becomes an overwhelming sensory impact: the blinding stage lights, the scent of woodsmoke and street food, and the loud sound of voices singing together. Critics often regard these events as overpriced and disorganized, and perhaps, on a purely practical level, they have a point. However, to focus simply on the chaos is to miss the broader significance. A festival is a shared activity that offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with a deeper sense of community. As the sun began to set, casting an emotional glow over the audience, the music stopped to be mere background noise. It became a unifying force that went beyond language and background. Standing there, tired and covered in dust but singing my heart out alongside a sea of strangers, I realized I wasn’t just watching a performance. I was part of something much larger than myself — a living, breathing testament to the power of human connection through melody. 28.What is the typical image of a British festival according to paragraph 1? A.Crowding together to play music. B.Bearing minor discomforts together. C.Putting up with extremely loud sounds. D.Cheering together for the first performer. 29.Why did Belfast 2024 feel more like a temporary utopia? A.It brought online friends together. B.It provided various food and drinks. C.It offered the best music performance. D.It enabled unique musical experience. 30.What do critics fail to recognize about music festivals? A.The reasons for the high price. B.The logic of the organization. C.The value of the social connection. D.The nature of digital interaction. 31.What is the best title of the passage? A.The Secret of Belfast 2024. B.The Healing Power of Music. C.The Unifying Sound of Belfast. D.The Organization of Music Festivals. D Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right. The study conducted by a research team found that people around the world could identify lullabies (摇篮曲), dance songs, and comforting songs — regardless of the songs’ cultural origin — after hearing just a 14-second clip (片段). The finding suggests that not only is music deeply rooted in human nature, but that some types of songs break cultural boundaries. The findings are based on a wide-reaching experiment in which 750 online participants in 60 countries listened to brief clips of songs collected from nearly 90 small societies around the world, including hunter-gatherers and some special farmers. Participants then answered six questions, rating each clip according to whether they believed the song was used for dancing, calming a baby, treating illness, or expressing love. Two additional uses — mourning (哀悼) the dead and telling a story — were included as controls. The data showed that despite participants’ unfamiliarity with the cultures, the random sampling of each song, and the short duration of the samples, people were able to reliably infer the songs’ functions, and that their ratings were consistent across the world. The findings ran counter to expert expectations. The team had also asked professionals, including performers, composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to identify the song types. Their answer was no. And not only that, but they predicted that people’s responses would be inconsistent with one another. “That’s not what we found,” the researchers said. The researchers also wanted to know whether listeners were recognizing certain non-musical characteristics of the songs. To test that, the team conducted a second study. This time, they asked listeners about a number of contextual and musical features, ranging from the gender of the singers to the rhythm of the song. When data from the two studies were combined, the results showed that songs of the same function shared similar characteristics — lullabies, for example, tended to be slower and simpler than dance music — suggesting that something about musical characteristics crosses cultural boundaries. 32.What did the participants do in the first study? A.They distinguished functions of the songs. B.They identified the cultural origins of the songs. C.They recognized the non-musical features of the songs. D.They compared the rhythms from diverse music styles. 33.What does the underlined part “ran counter to” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A.Were equal to. B.Were similar to. C.Were superior to. D.Were opposite to. 34.Why did the researchers carry out the second study? A.To test the musical knowledge of a wider audience. B.To collect more diverse songs from various cultures. C.To confirm the surprising results from the first one. D.To explore the underlying reasons behind the findings. 35.What can we learn from the two studies? A.Listeners recognize music by its rhythm. B.Something about music might be universal. C.Dance music is usually slower and simpler. D.Cultural similarities lead to similar musical features. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Overseas Safety: How to Protect Yourself When Travelling With travel becoming popular worldwide, more people are eager to explore overseas destinations. She labored along without complaint, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came, it must not be out here along the roadway. Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see, but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this stretch of wooded road, when it was too cold for dogs to go outside? Gus parked his truck and approached the animals. He squatted (蹲下) and stretched out his hands to the beagles, which made no effort to escape. He read their tags by his truck’s headlights: The female was named Pepper, and the male was Cooper. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred. He placed the dogs in his truck, on the floorboards on the passenger side. By the time he came around to the driver’s side, they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled (依偎) together there. Gus dried his phone, snapped a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katic Kiebcl. Then he dialed the number from the dogs’ tags. A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling. “I gave those dogs away,” the man said.“ They’ re not mine anymore.” “ Well, do you want them back?” “ No. I can’t take care of them.” The man hung up. B.The benefits of regular sleep. C.The necessity of work-life balance. 【答案】18.C 19.C 20.A 【详解】 World Sleep Day was organized since 2008. It is held on March 21 every year. It aims to highlight the importance of good sleep and raise awareness of how sleep determines our everyday lives. Now, a world first study from the University of South Australia shows that increased physical activities during the day improve sleep quality and reduce tiredness, emphasizing the importance of exercise for a good night’s rest. The study found that children and adults with higher levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity have less troubled sleep and better sleep quality. In general, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but a recent survey found that on work days, only 21% of them really get a full eight hours of sleep. For teenagers, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night. However, 27% of people throughout the world have sleep problems. Now there are over 80 kinds of sleep disorders, and most people know little about their danger. So for our good life and work, it’s necessary for us to realize the importance of sleep and try to have a good sleep. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A F. 【答案】28.B 29.D 30.C 31.C 【导语】作者亲历贝尔法斯特音乐节,打破固有刻板印象,感受到音乐跨越差异凝聚众人的力量,体会到线下人际相处的独特价值。 28.细节理解题。根据第一段“For many, the typical image of a British festival is one of collective endurance — crowding together in rain-soaked tents and dealing with the unpredictable weather.(在很多人印象里,英国节日的典型画面就是集体熬日子:人们挤在被雨水浸透的帐篷里,应对变幻莫测的天气。)”可知,英国节日的典型画面就是人们要共同承受种种不便。 29.细节理解题。根据第二段“In this brief window of time, the normal rules of social connection were paused. A festival is a shared activity that offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with a deeper sense of community.(批评者常认为这类活动票价虚高、秩序混乱,单从实际角度来看,他们的看法不无道理。但倘若只着眼于乱象,便会忽略其深层价值。节庆属于集体活动,难得让人脱离网络世界,重拾浓厚的集体归属感。)”可知,批评者没能认识到音乐节的社交联结价值。 31.主旨大意题。通读全文特别是根据最后一段“It became a unifying force that went beyond language and background...a living, breathing testament to the power of human connection through melody.(音乐成为跨越隔阂的凝聚力量,旋律拉近人与人之间的距离。)”可知,文章围绕贝尔法斯特音乐节凝聚人心的音乐之声展开。所以C项“The Unifying Sound of Belfast.(贝尔法斯特之声,凝聚万众之心)”符合语境。 D Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right. 【答案】32.A 33.D 34.D 35.B 【导语】本文主要介绍哈佛大学一项新研究:即便来自不同文化背景,人们也能分辨歌曲的不同用途,说明音乐存在跨越文化的共通特质。 32.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Participants then answered six questions, rating each clip according to whether they believed the song was used for dancing, calming a baby, treating illness, or expressing love.(参与者随后回答了六个问题,根据他们认为歌曲是用于跳舞、安抚婴儿、治疗疾病还是表达爱意,对每个片段进行评分。)”可知,在第一个研究中,参与者要区分歌曲的功能。 33.词句猜测题。根据第五段画线词“ran counter to”前面的句子“The data showed that despite participants’ unfamiliarity with the cultures, the random sampling of each song, and the short duration of the samples, people were able to reliably infer the songs’ functions, and that their ratings were consistent across the world.(数据显示,尽管参与者对这些文化并不熟悉,每首歌曲都是随机选取的,且样本持续时间很短,但人们仍能够可靠地推断出歌曲的功能,而且他们的评分在全球范围内是一致的。)”以及其后的句子“The team had also asked professionals, including performers, composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to identify the song types. Their answer was no. And not only that, but they predicted that people’s responses would be inconsistent with one another.(研究团队还询问了包括表演者、作曲家、心理学家和科学家在内的专业人士,他们是否认为人们能够识别出歌曲类型。他们的回答是否定的。不仅如此,他们还预测人们的回答会相互不一致。)”可知,研究结果与专家预期相反,ran counter to含有“与……相反”之意。 34.细节理解题。根据第六段中的“The researchers also wanted to know whether listeners were recognizing certain non-musical characteristics of the songs. To test that, the team conducted a second study.(研究人员还想知道听众是否通过歌曲的某些非音乐特征来识别。为了验证这一点,团队开展了第二项研究。)”可知,研究人员进行第二项研究是为了探索研究结果背后的潜在原因。 35.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right.(诗人、哈佛大学教授亨利•沃兹沃思•朗费罗曾说过一句名言:“音乐是人类通用的语言。”哈佛大学的一项新研究表明,他可能是对的)”以及最后一段中的“When data from the two studies were combined, the results showed that songs of the same function shared similar characteristics — lullabies, for example, tended to be slower and simpler than dance music — suggesting that something about musical characteristics crosses cultural boundaries.(当两项研究的数据结合起来时,结果显示,功能相同的歌曲具有相似的特征——例如,摇篮曲往往比舞曲更慢、更简单——这表明音乐特征的一些方面跨越了文化界限。)” Overseas Safety: How to Protect Yourself When Travelling With travel becoming popular worldwide, more people are eager to explore overseas destinations. These beagles were abandoned, then. Gus looked over at them, their large ho und eyes pleading. Gus called the county dog warden’s office, but it was after hours, so he left a message. The father- to- be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn, some stable where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. These beagles were abandoned, then. Gus looked over at them, their large ho und eyes pleading. Gus called the county dog warden’s office, but it was after hours, so he left a message.
