Once, I first saw it at a school exhibition, where the bright red patterns immediately caught my attention. The works showed flowers, animals, and even stories from Chinese legends. I was amazed by the skill and patience required to make each delicate shape. Paper cutting inspires me in many ways. It teaches me to slow down, stay focused, and appreciate the beauty hidden in simple things. Besides, it reminds me of the value of our culture and encourages me to protect it. Through this form of art, I feel more connected to my roots. Everyday life has never contained more stuff—an endless reel of words, ideas, games, songs, videos, memes, outrageous statements, celebrity meltdowns, life hacks, extremely talented animals. Yet audiences can sense what’s missing. For all the energy society invests in culture today, little has emerged that feels new, and certainly nothing revolutionary enough to properly outmode the past. Some commentators have argued that cultural progress is at a standstill. In The Crisis of Culture, published in English in 2024, the French political scientist Olivier Roy claims that the canon has been abandoned, subcultures have been reduced to superficial identity groups, and the marketplace has swallowed everything. As a full diagnosis, this seems too pessimistic. In its broadest definition, culture always exists, and subcultures remain—there are just fewer conspicuous ones now, and those have less influence. The canon is not dead; the problem, rather, is that it casts too long a shadow over the present. Kurt Cobain would have wanted the next generation’s musicians and listeners to kill their idols, including him. Instead, they wear his face on T-shirts. Still, the lingering reverence toward Cobain and other larger-than-life 20th-century artists suggests a deeply rooted collective respect for the agents of radical cultural change. What’s missing now is a veneration of the artistic mindset, which possesses the imagination to reject kitsch—art that trades in well-worn formulas, stock emotions, and immediate comprehensibility—and pursue work that expands the possibilities of human perception. Doing so requires at least some creators in the cultural ecosystem to strive for complexity, ambiguity, and formal experimentation—attributes that power the masterpieces that draw millions of people every year to museums. The first step in reversing cultural stagnation is to accept that artistic invention is a social good. And like so many other social goods, it isn’t necessarily going to have its production prioritized by the market. We—creators and audiences alike—have to make an effort to encourage bold new forms of culture. Even failures and half steps will be more interesting than overly market-tested products. 崇敬,敬畏 16. larger‑than‑life adj. 1.For all the energy society invests in culture today, little has emerged that feels new, and certainly nothing revolutionary enough to properly outmode the past. “For all the energy society invests in culture today”是让步状语,其中“society invests in culture today”是省略了关系代词that的定语从句,修饰先行词“energy”;“little has emerged”是主句部分,“that feels new”是定语从句,修饰先行词“little”;“and”连接两个并列部分,“nothing revolutionary enough to properly outmode the past”中“revolutionary enough to properly outmode the past”是后置定语,修饰“nothing”。 2. But the industry has faced persistent challenges: high energy costs, technical failures, and questions about whether it can grow anything beyond leafy greens. Now, a new wave of vertical farms is emerging, backed by major investors and advances in LED lighting and automation. In cities like Newark, New Jersey, massive indoor farms now produce up to 2 million pounds of greens per year in spaces the size of a grocery store. These farms use hydroponic systems that deliver nutrients directly to plant roots, eliminating the need for soil and allowing year-round production independent of the weather. “We can grow anywhere,” said one industry executive. “We’re not dependent on climate, and we’re not dependent on seasons. We can put a farm in the middle of a city and deliver produce the same day it’s harvested.” The environmental benefits are significant. Vertical farming uses up to 95% less water than conventional agriculture and eliminates the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transportation. With produce often traveling thousands of miles from farm to plate, local indoor farming offers an appealing alternative. Yet skepticism remains. Critics point to the enormous energy consumption required to power LED lights and climate control systems. A vertical farm can use as much electricity as a small town, and unless that energy comes from renewable sources, the carbon footprint can exceed that of traditional farming. Additionally, the technology remains expensive — construction costs for a single facility can exceed $100 million. Perhaps the biggest limitation is what vertical farms can actually grow. The economics only work for high-value, fast-growing crops like lettuce, herbs, and microgreens. Staple crops like wheat, rice, and corn — which feed the majority of the world’s population — are unlikely to ever be producible in vertical farms. Despite these challenges, proponents argue that vertical farming is not meant to replace traditional agriculture but to complement it. In an increasingly urbanized world with growing climate pressures, having a reliable source of fresh produce grown within cities may prove invaluable. As one researcher put it, “This isn’t about growing all our food indoors. It’s about building resilience into our food system.” 1.What can we learn about vertical farming from paragraph 1? A.It offers methods to cut farming costs. B.It reflects expectations plus real challenges. C.It shows the popularity of vertical farming. D.It proves vertical farming improves food output. 2.What’s the strength of hydroponic systems? A.It helps reduce the amount of energy consumption. B.It makes the growth of indoor staple crops possible. C.It can be operated without soil and weather limits. D.It allows farmers to expand food production easily. 3.Which of the following do critics probably agree on? A.Developing vertical farms needs careful consideration. B.Using new technology needs lower construction costs. C.Improving traditional farming needs little public support. D.Cutting the cost of facilities in a small town needs action. 4.What is the author’s attitude towards vertical farming? A.Objective and reasonable. B.Skeptical and opposed. C.Doubtful and pessimistic. D.Supportive and confident. Passage 2 It began in the 1980s as a way to quickly produce simple prototype models in plastic. These days 3D printing or "additive manufacturing" is used to make kitchen gadgets, jet-engine parts, dental implants and even some buildings. In a paper published in Science Advances, a team of researchers led by Yong Lin Kong and his colleagues at Rice University propose another application. They have come up with a way to print electronic circuits onto delicate materials, including living tissue. The researchers hope that could eventually lead to medical implants that wirelessly monitor the condition of their recipients, high tech pills and more. 3D printing circuitry is not a new idea. Nano Dimension, for instance, prints electronics into communication equipment and medical sensors. Printers made by Optomec, build antennas directly into smartphone cases, as well as printing circuits onto touch screens and solar panels. The process uses electronic inks that contain tiny particles of conductive material, such as copper, silver or gold. The particles are then joined together to form a conductive pathway, usually by a process known as annealing, which involves either heating the entire product in furnace (熔炉), or attacking the inks with a laser. But that approach has limits, says Dr. Kong. The heat can damage sensitive materials, including some polymers and living tissue. His team has developed a way to deal with electronic inks using microwaves focused into a beam smaller than a human hair. The precision of the beam ensures that only the ink particles heat up, avoiding any damage to the surrounding substances. The researchers produced a special resonator (谐振器) to boost the microwave energy and a tapered tip to focus the beam into a dot less than 200 millionths of a meter across. The kit is small enough to be fitted to a desktop 3D printer. By adjusting the power of the beam, it is possible to change the microstructure of the ink. This can be used to create regions of higher or lower conductivity along the circuit, allowing some components, such as resistors (电阻), to be created within the wiring. This capability opens the door to printing electronic circuits directly onto heat-sensitive materials like flexible plastics or even human skin. 1.What new progress has Kong’s research team achieved? A.It makes plastic industrial models. B.It develops wires for high tech pills. C.It produces parts for aircraft engines. D.It prints circuits on fragile substances. 2.What does the underlined word “annealing” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.A heating method to combine metal particles. B.A physical means to store conductive metal ink mixtures. C.A technical operation to narrow focused microwave beams. D.A burning treatment to remove particles from electronic inks. 3.What is the key breakthrough of Dr. Kong’s research team? A.A new type of conductive electronic ink. B.An approach to heating the ink accurately. C.A 3D printer working faster than traditional ones. D.A method of using microwave at room temperature. 4.What will the following paragraph most probably discuss? A.The ways to improve desktop 3D-printing quality. B.The potential applications of the new technology. C.The major limitations of 3D printing techniques. D.The working principles of the special resonator. Passage 3 AI glasses, one of the most cutting-edge smart wearables, are jointly developed and produced by leading Chinese tech research teams. Years of professional engineering research and repeated user tests have shaped this generation of lightweight, high-performance smart glasses. Given people’s real pain points in daily cross-language communication and inconvenient carrying of smart devices, developers aim to create a device that looks no different from ordinary eyeglasses, so users can wear it all day without extra burden. It enables you to store your data on distant servers. 1 In this way, the space on your computer won’t be taken up. There are two options available: public cloud storage allows you to share hosting space with other users; private cloud storage is the ideal choice for companies who want to have their data stored in their own environment. 2 Once you have registered and set up your account, you simply save your files via the Internet using your username and password. This ensures your data remains secure and inaccessible to anyone else. Should you choose, you can put certain permissions in place, which makes it easy to share your data with your colleagues or your family. When you sign up to cloud storage, you can choose the amount of space you need. 3 You can store anything digital: all your files, videos and pictures. Whether you want to use this storage solution to store your family photographs or you want to use it to store your work documentation, you will find it quite convenient. Is it better than your computer or an external drive (驱动)? The answer is a definite yes. 4 This is the most common cause of lost work and memories. External hard drives can still break, or fail. Here you also have the added risk of misplacing it or having it stolen. There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data from wherever, whenever, to not needing expensive external storage devices. 5 A.Computers crash all the time. B.Cloud storage is very simple to use. C.You will find cloud storage very cheap. D.This means you can store all your digital things remotely. E.Cloud storage providers offer many layers of data security. F.You can start with a small amount and increase the storage size later on. G.The only disadvantage, however, is that you need the Internet to access files. Passage 5 Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been one of the most revolutionary technologies in recent decades, and its future development holds even more astonishing prospects. One significant trend is the continuous expansion of AI applications. For instance, in the transportation sector, self-driving vehicles are expected to become more common and reliable. They will improve traffic efficiency. 1 . It’s expected that in the near future, self-driving cars will be a mainstream mode of transportation. In the field of healthcare, AI will play an increasingly crucial role. 2 . By analysing an individual’s genetic data, lifestyle, and medical history, AI systems can more accurately predict diseases and recommend tailored treatment plans. This will lead to more effective prevention and cures. Another trend is the improvement of AI’s cognitive (认知的) abilities. AI will be able to understand and generate natural language more skillfully. 3 . Therefore, it will promote global communication and cooperation. Virtual assistants will also become more intelligent and human-like. They are able to have in-depth and meaningful conversations with users, understanding their emotions and intentions better. 4 . Smart factories will emerge (出现). Here AI-powered robots and machines can work together efficiently. They can improve production processes, detect faults in real-time, and adjust production parameters (参数) automatically, leading to higher productivity and quality control. 根据第一段中的“For years, vertical farming has been promoted as the future of agriculture — a way to grow massive amounts of food in climate-controlled warehouses, using far less water and land than traditional farming.
