Look around you. Can you find anything made of rubber (橡胶)? Your erasers, rain shoes, car tires, doctors’ gloves …Rubber is soft and isn’t afraid of water. It is important and useful to us. But there is bad news. We might run out of natural rubber.

I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holiday with our uncle who is a geologist (地质学家) and loves to collect stones.
One day, he bought us two backpacks (背包) and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then, he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.
When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relaxed when we took them off. Yet, our uncle’s backpack was half empty.
“Why did you give us so many stones?” we asked.
“I didn’t. You did,” he said. “You didn’t know it, but I gave you a little attitude (态度) test today. I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining, I added (增加) a stone to your backpacks. Every time you talked about something with positive (积极的) thoughts (想法), I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.”
Our backpacks were full of stones.
“Your negative (消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them in your mind (头脑) just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be,” said our uncle.

Many people like to travel by plane, but I don’t like it because an airport is usually far from the city. You have to get there early and wait for hours for the plane to take off and itis often late. You can’t open the windows. You can’t choose the food. Planes are fast, but they still take hours to go out of the airport and into the city.
I like traveling by train. I think trains are safe. Railway stations are usually in cities. When you are late for a train, you can catch another one. You can walk around in the train and open the windows. You can see many interesting things on your way. I know it takes a little more time.
I also like cars. You can start your journey when you want to, and you don’t need to get to a railway station or a bus stop. Also you can carry many things with you in a car. But sometimes there are too many cars on the road.
8.What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A.People like to travel by plane. B.The writer dislikes the airport.
C.The airport is far from the city. D.The writer dislikes travelling by plane.
9.What are the good things about the train? Check and choose the right answer.
①It is safe to take trains. ②It only takes people a little more time.

⑤You can make new friends on your way.
A.①②④ B.①③④ C.②③⑤ D.②④⑤
10.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refers to?
A.The airport. B.The plane. C.The food. D.The city.
11.What can we know about the writer?

B.He likes to take a car because he has a car.
C.He likes to take a train because it takes a little more time.
D.He thinks it takes a lot of time to go to and get out of the airport.

Do you have any close friends? I’m sure you do. Everyone has a good friend or two. I learnt an interesting lesson about the power of friendship (友谊的力量) a few days ago.
It was a story about two friends—a Canadian girl named Jessica Stuart and a Japanese girl named Fukue. Stuart’s parents moved to Japan to work when she was a child. After Stuart met Fukue at school, they became good friends. Stuart often protected Fukue from bullies (欺凌).
After one year, Stuart’s family moved back home. Stuart and Fukue stayed in touch by writing letters to each other. But after two years, Fukue’s letters stopped coming.
Stuart didn’t know what happened. Why did the letters stop? She began a long journey (旅程) to find her old friend. Many years later, she found Fukue. Both girls were adults (成年人) by then. It turned out that Fukue dropped out of school (辍学) because she was bullied again after Stuart left. Luckily, they were able to find each other again, even after many years.
Not every friendship can last forever. People come and go. But true friends can find a way to stay together forever—even if they’ve been far apart for a long time.

A.her close friend was in Japan B.her parents had to work there

For many of us, our closest contact with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to watch the behaviours and characteristics of different kinds of amazing animals. It's an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals?
A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed (制成标本) dead exhibits in a museum. Later, some people caught live animals, brought them home and put them on show to the public. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have changed the conditions and environments for animals, building bigger fences and removing bars.
Some people have questioned the way of keeping animals in a zoo and using them just for fun, but zoos are wild about showing they are helping wildlife by educating (教育) us to protect them. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Salford University says: "Without zoos, there would be quite a lot of different animals on Earth which we wouldn't have today."Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its work. It brought a "rare kind of fish back from the dead''' after letting a school of golden skiffia fish go back into their home river."
While the debate about having zoos continues, people are looking for new ways to meet wildlife, such as using virtual reality (VR). Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: "Taking a walk through a group of elephants, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon."
1.Where do most people get to see a wild animal?
2.How do modern zoos and wildlife parks improve the environment for their animals?
3.Which way do you think is better for animals, keeping them in a zoo or letting them live in the wild? Why?
