Getting caught in a flood is no one’s idea of a lucky day. Unless you’re Justin and Jessica Walker.
It was August 2004. Jessica, then a Virginia Commonwealth University student, was waiting outside the campus gym, her ride home nowhere to be seen. Justin walked out and offered a ride and shelter from the increasing downpour. She recognized him from orientation (迎新会) a few days before — they’d just chatted briefly there. “I was like, OK, maybe he’s hitting on me,” Jessica later told WTVR. But it was raining buckets, so she accepted.
Buckets turned to barrels as Justin, new to Richmond, made a wrong turn onto Main Street, landing the two in the traffic jam caused by rising floodwaters and abandoned cars. Just when the two thought their luck couldn’t get worse, a wave washed over Justin’s car, flooding the engine and sending rainwater through the air vents (通气孔). Suddenly, the water was up to their laps and rising. It was time to move. Justin grabbed her door handle and rapidly opened Jessica’s door and shoved her out of the car. Battling rushing water, the two made it to the steps of a nearby train station. They spent the next few hours helping others to safety inside the station until Amtrak sent a train to carry the stranded (滞留人员) to higher ground. Shivering in wet clothes, sharing a tiny sandwich and a beer, Justin and Jessica’s connection crackled.
“I’m one of those people who needs a sign, and I thought, if God isn’t giving me a sign right now, I’m a fool,” says Jessica. “And I knew: This is the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with.”
If Justin hadn’t made a wrong turn, the two likely would have skirted the flood and may never have spoken again. Instead, four years later, Justin and Jessica were engaged. “I lost a car but gained a fiancee,” says Justin.
4. Why did Jessica accept Justin’s offer of a ride initially?
A. She was deeply attracted to Justin.
B. Justin insisted despite her refusal.
C. She had no other way to escape the heavy rain.
D. They were classmates working on a project together.
5. What directly caused Justin to abandon the car?
A. A collision with another vehicle. B. The water rising to a critical level.
C. Engine failure due to a wave flooding it. D. the car running out of gas in the traffic jam.
6. What does the phrase “their connection crackled” in paragraph 3 imply about Justin and Jessica?
A. They argued fiercely during the crisis. B. They discovered they had mutual friends.
C. They began to develop romantic feelings. D. Their communication was interrupted by the storm.
7. What is the theme conveyed by the story of Justin and Jessica?
A. Courage in emergencies lays the foundation for mutual trust.
B. Life’s crucial moments may arise from unpredictable events.
C. Shared hardship deepens emotional bonds between strangers.
D. Natural disasters force individuals to face up to their weakness.
C 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据第二段的“But it was raining buckets, so she accepted. (但是雨下得很大,所以她接受了。)”可知,Jessica接受Justin搭车提议的原因是因为雨下得很大,她没有其他方式可以避雨。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“Suddenly, the water was up to their laps and rising. It was time to move. (突然,水涨到了他们的大腿,而且还在上升。是时候离开了。)”可知,当水涨到他们大腿并继续上升时,Justin意识到必须弃车逃生。因此,是水的上涨直接导致了Justin弃车。故选B。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段的“Shivering in wet clothes, sharing a tiny sandwich and a beer, Justin and Jessica’s connection crackled. (他们穿着湿衣服瑟瑟发抖,分享着一个小三明治和一瓶啤酒,Justin和Jessica的……)”可知,此句描述了他们在经历共同困境后的状态,从陌生到分享食物和饮料,可知他们的相处方式有所变化,所以“their connection crackled”暗指他们开始产生浪漫的感情。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段的“If Justin hadn’t made a wrong turn, the two likely would have skirted the flood and may never have spoken again. Instead, four years later, Justin and Jessica were engaged. (如果Justin没有走错路,他们俩很可能就避开了洪水,也许再也不会说话了。相反,四年后,Justin和Jessica订婚了。)”及全文内容可知,文章描述的是一个意外的错误(走错路)导致了他们相遇并最终订婚,这传达了生活中的关键时刻可能源于不可预测的事件的主题。故选B。

In casual conversations, government documents, and formal job interviews, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating: “Where are you from?”
I could say I am from Japan - I was born there, after all. Or, should I say I am from the United States, whose culture, philosophy, and language are deeply rooted into my life? In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. I had to live with this sense of sadness till very recently.
Inside my drawer is a simple, white bath towel that I have not used since I brought it from my parent’s house last summer. On an ordinary evening, I took it out to take a bath, but stopped after the sweet smell of laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that my parents used back in Japan wafted (飘荡) into my nose. I felt my eyes water as that smell brought up my mixed emotions: sadness, loneliness, and nostalgia. It’s silly, but I still avoid using that towel to this day because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my Tide detergent.
A similar thing happened when I was walking through a supermarket. Somehow being in the vegetable section, with the smells of raw vegetables and some unknown spices (香料), brought up the broad strokes of a memory from when I lived in California. That smell took me back to an open market my father always loved to go to. Anytime I come across that “vegetable smell,” I can blurrily (模糊地) picture the green plastic boxes with onions, savory spices, and people’s voices. I don’t know the name of that market, where it was, or if it even exists now, but I can remember that it always brought a sense of comfort.
Though, I still struggle when answering where I am from, in some moments, when a smell hits me with the memories it brings, I like to believe the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. Myself, my “home,” are still split, but I am lucky enough to feel like I am “at home” in these short moments.
8. Why is the first paragraph written?
A. To picture a scene in daily life. B. To provide background information.
C. To lead to the topic of the text. D. To show the importance of home.
9. What does the underlined word “nostalgia” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Anxiety. B. Homesickness. C. Stress. D. Excitement.
10. What can we learn about the author?
A. He has an unclear memory of the childhood life.
B. He always went to a supermarket with his father.
C. He is more greatly influenced by American cultures.
D. He can answer where he comes from without thinking.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The unforgettable past life. B. The difficulty of answering a question.
C. The value of home. D. The smell of home.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据文章第一段“In casual conversations, government documents, and formal job interviews, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating: “Where are you from?” (在闲聊、政府文件以及正式的求职面试中,有一个看似简单的问题,我却总是犹豫着不知如何回答:“你来自哪里?”)”以及下文“I could say I am from Japan - I was born there, after all. Or, should I say I am from the United States, whose culture, philosophy, and language are deeply rooted into my life? In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. I had to live with this sense of sadness till very recently. (我可以说我来自日本——毕竟我是在那里出生的。或者,我应该说我来自美国,因为那里的文化、哲学和语言已经深深融入了我的生活?在我看来,这两个答案都不够令人满意。我不得不带着这种悲伤的感觉生活,直到最近。)”可知,文章首先提出一个问题,接下来就开始讲述作者对于这个问题的困惑,并引出自己的经历和感受,因此第一段的作用是引出文章的主题。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“I felt my eyes water as that smell brought up my mixed emotions: sadness, loneliness, and nostalgia. (那种气味勾起了我复杂的情感:悲伤、孤独和_____。)”中的“sadness”和“loneliness”可推测,划线单词表达了一种负面的情绪。再根据下文“It’s silly, but I still avoid using that towel to this day because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my Tide detergent.
根据文章第二段“I could say I am from Japan - I was born there, after all. Or, should I say I am from the United States, whose culture, philosophy, and language are deeply rooted into my life? (我可以说我来自日本——毕竟我是在那里出生的。或者,我应该说我来自美国,因为那里的文化、哲学和语言已经深深融入了我的生活?在我看来,这两个答案都不够令人满意。)”可知,作者对于自己的身份认同感到困惑,作者虽然出生在日本,但美国的文化、哲学和语言已经深深融入了他的生活,这使得作者对于自己的童年记忆可能不那么清晰,因为作者受到了两种文化的深刻影响。故选A。
根据文章第一段“In casual conversations, government documents, and formal job interviews, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating: “Where are you from?” (在闲聊、政府文件以及正式的求职面试中,有一个看似简单的问题,我却总是犹豫着不知如何回答:“你来自哪里?”)”,第三段“On an ordinary evening, I took it out to take a bath, but stopped after the sweet smell of laundry detergent(洗涤剂) that my parents used back in Japan wafted(飘荡) into my nose. I felt my eyes water as that smell brought up my mixed emotions: sadness, loneliness, and nostalgia. (在一个普通的晚上,我拿出它准备洗澡,但当我闻到父母在日本时常用的洗衣液那甜美的香味时,我停下了。那种气味勾起了我复杂的情感:悲伤、孤独和怀旧。)”、第四段“A similar thing happened when I was walking through a supermarket. Somehow being in the vegetable section, with the smells of raw vegetables and some unknown spices(香料), brought up the broad strokes of a memory from when I lived in California. That smell took me back to an open market my father always loved to go to. (在超市购物时也发生过类似的事情。不知为何,当我走到蔬菜区,闻到生蔬菜和一些不知名的香料的味道时,我脑海中浮现出了我在加利福尼亚生活时的一段模糊记忆。那种气味让我回想起了父亲总是爱去的一个露天市场。)”以及最后一段“Though, I still struggle when answering where I am from, in some moments, when a smell hits me with the memories it brings, I like to believe the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. (虽然我在回答“我来自哪里”时仍然感到困惑,但在某些时刻,当一种气味唤起我的记忆时,我愿意相信,我当时所感受到的,也是人们在家时所感受到的。)”可知,文章主要围绕“家的气味”展开,讲述了作者对于“你来自哪里”这个问题的困惑,并通过超市蔬菜区的气味唤起了作者对童年的回忆。故选D。

California passed a new law to restrict. (限制) student smartphone use recently. School districts are required to pass rules by July 1,2026. The new rules should restrict or ban (禁止) students from using smartphones on school grounds or while students are under the supervision of school employees. The law makes California the latest state to try to reduce student phone access. Florida, Louisiana, Indiana, and several other 'states have already passed laws aimed at restricting student phone use at school
The new law is aimed at helping students focus on schoolwork, social development, and the world in front of them, not their screens, when they're in school. It is also meant to address the mental health effects that social media can have on children.
But some people have raised worries that school cellphone bans could cut parents off from their children if there is an emergency (紧急情况) !And an official said that many of the students do not always like the rules, which is in part a sign of how hooked they have become to phones.
The new law comes after an earlier law of the state that was passed in 2019. The 2019 law allowing school districts to restrict student' phone access makes exceptions for emergencies. The new law does not change that.
ShaKenya Edison from the Santa' Barbara Unified School' District, which put in place a ban on student phone use in class during the 2023-to-2024 school year, said teachers have noted that their students have been less distracted (注意力分散的) in class since the start of the ban. Tarik McFall, head teacher of Sutter Middle School in Folsom, said that' before his school's cellphone ban, students recorded fights, filmed entertainment videos and spent lunchtime looking at their phones. “The ban has totally changed the culture of the school. To have them put away, to have them power off... it has been a great thing,” McFall said.
12. What is the main goal of California's new smartphone rules for students?
A. To improve emergency communication. B. To reduce distractions and improve focus.
C. To restrict the visit to social media at home. D. To encourage phone 'use for educational purposes.
13. What does the underlined word “hooked” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Similar. B. Blind. C. Open. D. Addicted.
14. How does the new law deal with the exceptions for emergencies in the 2019 law?
A. It keeps them. B. It calls off them. C. It goes against them. D. It cuts out some of them.
15. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. The culture of the schools is worsening.
B. The students have widely recognized the ban.
C. The new rules are making a difference to the schools.
D. The teachers report failure in student social development.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据划线处上句“And an official said that many of the students do not always like the rules (一位官员表示,许多学生并不总是喜欢这些规定)”可知,这在一定程度上说明他们已经迷上了手机。
根据第四段最后两句“The 2019 law allowing school districts to restrict student' phone access makes exceptions for emergencies. The new law does not change that. (2019年的法律允许学区限制学生使用手机,但紧急情况除外。新法律并没有改变这一点。)”可知,新法规没有改变这一点,而是保留了关于例外情况的规定。故选A。

可知,自禁令实施以来,学生们在课堂上分心的现象减少了,以及根据““The ban has totally changed the culture of the school. To have them put away, to have them power off... it has been a great thing,” McFall said.

Jenny’s life centered around two things: her mother’s broom sweeping the streets and the books she loved to read. Her father had been sick for long, reducing the family to poverty. Her mother, Annika worked dawn till dusk as a street cleaner while Jenny balanced schoolwork and caregiving. Their apartment, though modest, held a shelf where stories like Broomstar’s Journey offered escape — a reminder that even gloomy days could hold magic.
When Annika’s arthritis (关节炎) worsened, Jenny joined her after school. Sweeping alongside her mother, the girl would recite lines from her favorite books, turning dull chores into adventures. “Words make the work lighter,” she told her mother, who smiled as she noted how Jenny’s eyes lit up with every story. One winter day, a neighbor snapped a photo of them — Jenny holding a broom in one hand and a dog-eared (书页折角的) book in the other — and shared it online with the caption: “Two hands, one broom, and a world of words.”
The post went viral. Soon donations poured in for her father’s treatment, and a local charity helped Annika open a small book café called Story Haven. It became a cozy place where kids could enjoy donated books, warm cocoa, and Jenny’s weekly storytime. As her father’s health improved, Jenny began writing her own stories — tales of talking brooms and girls who turned struggles into victories.
Then, on a spring morning, a silver car parked outside the café. Lindsey Hart, the famous children’s author whose books had inspired Jenny for years, stepped inside, a warm smile on her face. “I heard about a young storyteller here,” she said, approaching Jenny, who stood frozen in awe. Lindsey presented a signed copy of Whispers of the Broom and shared her own story of writing on napkins while working in her family’s bakery. “Your courage to dream while sweeping floors is what the magic writers chase,” she said, placing a hand on Jenny’s shoulder and leaving her telephone number, “Never let anything dim your light. Expecting your works in Children’s Tales Monthly.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
As the writer’s car disappeared into the distance, Jenny held the book tightly.

Months later, Jenny called Lindsey excitedly, “I have good news to share with you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As the writer’s car disappeared into the distance, Jenny held the book tightly. From that day, she grew more dedicated to reading and writing, with Lindsey’s words echoing in her mind. She woke at dawn to write in her notebook, attended writing workshops at the library, and even submitted stories to youth magazines. At Story Haven, she began guiding younger kids, showing them how to find stories in everyday moments — the way sunlight touched a broom, or the laughter of a café visitor. “Stories heal, ” she’d tell them, “just like they healed me. ”
Months later, Jenny called Lindsey excitedly, “I have good news to share with you. ” She told Lindsey that her first story was published in Children’s Tales Monthly, which was about a girl and her broom that discovered strength in storytelling. “Congratulations! I’m so proud of you! ” responded Lindsey, promising to offer any possible guidance. The publication and Lindsey’s encouragement inspired Jenny to dream bigger. She made up her mind to become a writer who could uplift others just as Lindsey did. Sitting at her desk in the café, with sunlight shining on her latest draft, Jenny realized something important: hardships are not the end — they are the beginning of new stories, filled with hope.

C

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
