Having no other choices,I called Jack for help."Stay there, and I'll be right there,"Jack's anxious voice came from the phone
quickly. Finally, after 30 minutes of anxious waiting,I saw a tall figure moving quickly toward me with a flashlight.I'd never been
more relieved to see someone in my life.It was Jack who was fighting the wind and snow all the way to get me."I want you to
follow me in your car. You'll be OK,"he said.I drove slowly behind him, feeling my heart begin to beat more slowly. We got to
Jack's house safely at last.
The warm reception and food at Jack's home relieved my anxiety Jack's wife and two kids welcomed me with open arms and
a warm meal, which turned all my fears into relief and gratitude. We spent the night chatting freely, sharing food and waiting out
the snowstorm cozily until the highway resumed.A week later,I took my children to Jack's house, and our two families became the
best friends from then on.

The first time I went to Germany with my boyfriend,I was very young and hadn't been to many places. As soon as we arrived,I had this incredible revelation.“I know all about this area. The food, the language.I know all about the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest,”I said to his German family.“How do you know about this?”they asked,in disbelief.
That was the first time it had dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was for it,just from growing up in New York City——I had been everywhere before I'd ever actually gone anywhere.
I grew up in the Chelsea Projects,288 10th Avenue at West 26th Street.A lot of kids there were first-generation Americans with immigrant parents who were still speaking Yiddish,Chinese or Portuguese,or just name a language, and they were speaking it.You ate every imaginable food from the rest of the world there. You were exposed to all different kinds of traditions.
It wasn't just that. The whole city was a classroom. All over town, you learned stuff you didn't even know you were learning. You didn't have to be rich to learn it,either. My mom was a teacher——a great Head Start teacher——and she made sure I partook of everything New York had to offer people who didn't have any money, because she knew it was the greatest education in the world.
We went to all the museums, which were free back then.We rode the bus to Lincoln Center, and watched dancers dancing there.Or we took the train to Coney Island. Those trips are among my fondest memories.
New York City played a big part in making me who I am.It's where I learned that I could pursue whatever I loved,but that I couldn't be a slacker(偷懒的人).The city is everything you've heard it is.It's crazy;it's horrible;it's magnificent;it's beautiful.It's a real live wire,hard to leave.
24.What contributed to the author's knowledge of Germany?
A.Her childhood experience. B.Her boyfriend's description.
C.Her past travel adventures. D.Her previous school education.
25.What can we learn about the author's neighborhood?
A.It was a traditional tourist attraction. B.It was famous for its many restaurants.
C.Kids there were born outside of America. D.Parents there spoke their mother tongues.
26.What did New York provide?
A.Quality education programs. B.Financial support for parents.
C.Welfare benefits for the poor. D.Diverse learning opportunities.
27.From which book is the text most likely taken?
A.Into Unknown Skies. B.Never Can Say Goodbye.
C.Mom Is Always by My Side. D.Falling for the Hometown Girl.
答案:24.A 25.D 26.D 27.B
be exposed to接触 pursue v.
That was the first time it had dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was for it,just from growing up in New York City—I had been everywhere before I'd ever actually gone anywhere.
That was the first time..。it had dawned on me…表示“我开始明白……”,it作形式主语,后面的"how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was for it”是真正的主语。
故选A。
根据第三段中的“I grew up in the Chelsea Projects..parents who were still speaking Yiddish,Chinese or Portuguese,or just name a language, and they were speaking it.”
The whole city was a classroom.All over town,you learned stuff you didn't
even know you were learning. You didn't have to be rich to learn it,either.”和第五段中的“We went to all the museums...We rode the bus to Lincoln Center...Or we took the train to Coney Island."可知,纽约提供了多样化的学习机会。故选D。
27.推理判断题。通读全文,结合最后一段中的“The city is everything you've heard it is...It's a real live wire,hard to leave.”

Firefighters continued making progress on Sunday against the destructive mountain fire in Ventura County. The large fire, which has burned more than 20,000 acres and destroyed 134 buildings, was partly controlled as firefighters worked to put out the remaining fire before winds were expected to pick up again on Monday night.
“Our community is badly affected and we are working tirelessly alongside firefighters from Ventura County and neighboring areas to bring this fire under control,”said Capt.William Hutton of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.
Light winds coming from the ocean and good humidity(湿热)levels on Sunday helped firefighters in the effort to prevent the fire, which started on Wednesday morning.Officials said they were continuing to track changes in weather as winds were expected to pick up again on Monday night through Tuesday morning.
“It's something that we're watching closely,”said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Walbrun.“The wind speeds right now do not look nearly as strong as when the fire started.”
More than 130 buildings have been destroyed in the fire, most of which are homes.“We're doing the best we can, trying to help people who have lost their homes,”said Justin Boyajian with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Ventura County.
A community meeting was scheduled for Sunday night at Ventura County Fire Station 54,where officials would provide the latest information and answer questions.Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said he understood that people in the community were feeling bad and in need of more information about what the recovery would look like.He stressed the importance of patience as firefighters were working to control the fire.“We're continuing to work hard to get things ready for people to come back,”Gardner said.“And that takes time.”

A.It destroyed many homes. B.It started on Monday morning.
C.It was caused by a house fire. D.It took the lives of firefighters.

A.Trees. B.Winds. C.Buildings. D.Temperatures.

The large fire, which has burned more than 20,000 acres and destroyed 134 buildings, was partly controlled as firefighters worked to put out the remaining fire before winds were expected to pick up again on Monday night.
分析:The large fire was partly controlled是主句,which引导的是非限制性定语从句,as和before引导的都是状语从句。
根据画线词下文“The wind speeds right now do not look nearly as strong as when the fire started.”
根据最后一段中“He stressed the importance of patience as firefighters were working to control the fire.”

Can you survive an unannounced storm?Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cellphones, there are still some cases where the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning,in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico sudden hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day's time, endangering everyone and everything in their path.
There have been oil workers trapped off the coast when sudden storms appeared.Field archaeologists have been stuck in seaside areas without storm warnings.A few decades ago,a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-induced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There've been a few cases where travelers were trapped on an island or in a seaside area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us——but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without a public shelter to hide in.Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies.Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you're headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight(手电筒)with extra batteries,a GPS device(装置),and a basic medical box.If you're traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You'd better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car.Keeping your head and your courage up is crucial to survival in any type of danger.Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.
32.According to the text, what can we know about most Atlantic hurricanes?
A.They form in the Caribbean Sea. B.They come from the Gulf of Mexico.
C.They develop off the coast of Africa. D.They are from the Pacific Ocean.
33.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The bad situations of oil workers. B.People trapped by sudden storms.
C.The danger of traveling on an island. D.The Texas National Guard group.
34.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To give some advice. B.To encourage traveling.
C.To underline the danger of hurricanes. D.To give some warnings.
35.In which part of a website would you most probably find the text?
A.Food. B.Sports. C.Life. D.Culture.
答案:32.C 33.B 34.A 35.C

根据最后一段第一句“But there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies.” 故选A

Most smartphones allow you to run location sharing software that uses the phone's GNSS capability to let friends and family know your exact location. There are lots of great uses for this technology. 36 .So make sure you're permitted to use an app or service, and pay attention to how you are using it.Here are some important points you may find helpful.
Choose what's best for you. Some location sharing services are games that let you give a shout out when you've turned up at a particular spot. 37 .Still others continue to share your location until you change the setting.Be sure you know exactly how your service shares your location.
Know who your friends are. 38 .This means people can search to see if you're on-line and add you as a friend. It's important to remember that sharing your location with people you've never met in real life is risky,so you should carefully manage friend requests and share your location only with people you know and trust.
39 .Some services automatically stop sending your location after a period of time, but others will send it forever——until you stop it.Review your contact list periodically and delete anyone to whom you no longer feel comfortable revealing your location.
Update parents.Location-based services are a great way for teens to let parents know where they are without having to call or text. 40 .If you're heading home late at night, you can also use a service like Glympse to share your location as you drive,so they'll know if you have car trouble or get stuck in traffic.

I survived a snowstorm
A snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday,Jan.31,2022.I was working at home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at the First Nations University of Canada,Saskatchewan,to sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. As the director of finance,I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible, whether there was a snowstorm or not.Besides,I wasn't worried.I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home.
It took about 30 minutes to get to the university along the Trans-Canada Highway. When I got there,my colleague Jack came in my office to co-sign the check, and then he left for the day.As I was packing up,I noticed Jack had left his laptop bag in my office.
“Shoot!”Jack said when I called him.“I'm already home.”
“I can bring it to you,”I assured him.It was just past 4:30 p.m.The snowstorm wasn't supposed to start until later, but just to be safe,I decided to take the country roads to his home instead of the highway. On the way to his place,I picked up a new cellphone charger, filled up my SUV with gas and picked up two stuffed-crust pizzas because I'd promised my 15-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son I'd bring some pizzas home for dinner. As a single mother,I worked hard and did my utmost to take good care of my two kids though it was not easy.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to Jack's house, where I dropped off his laptop bag and got right back on the road. Then the snowstorm started and it was coming down fast.Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a“snownado”,or what the TV meteorologists called a Saskatchewan screamer, because it came fast and was so wild that it screamed.
The snowstorm grew stronger and stronger, forcing me to slow down. The windows were covered with snow,so I rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really,I didn't have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on.At one point,I didn't know exactly where I was going;I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer's field,a ditch or worse.I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911.The policeman who received the call sadly advised me to try other ways for rescue as he was the only one on duty.

Having no other choices,I called Jack for help.“Stay there, and I'll be right there,”Jack's anxious voice came from the phone quickly. Finally, after 30 minutes of anxious waiting,I saw a tall figure moving quickly toward me with a flashlight.I'd never been more relieved to see someone in my life.It was Jack who was fighting the wind and snow all the way to get me.“I want you to follow me in your car. You'll be OK,"he said.I drove slowly behind him, feeling my heart begin to beat more slowly. We got to Jack's house safely at last.
The warm reception and food at Jack's home relieved my anxiety.Jack's wife and two kids welcomed me with open arms and a warm meal, which turned all my fears into relief and gratitude. We spent the night chatting freely, sharing food and waiting out the snowstorm cozily until the highway resumed.A week later,I took my children to Jack's house, and our two families became the best friends from then on.
