Jiang Tao: A Young Potter Carrying Local Craft
Five years ago, Jiang Tao gave up his well-paid design job in a crowded big city and went back to his hometown village. However, almost no young people wanted to learn this traditional skill, because it was impossible to get rich quickly by making pottery. Seeing the old craft facing disappearance, Jiang made up his mind to protect and develop it.
Now Jiang spends all his working days in his small pottery studio. He digs natural local clay, mixes raw materials carefully and creates all kinds of handmade pots and decorative clay artworks. At first, most villagers could not understand his choice. They thought he wasted his valuable youth on a low-income job. But Jiang never changed his mind. In his free time, he studied ancient pottery patterns and designed many new styles that young customers love.
Today, his handmade clay works sell very well on online shopping platforms. Besides making artworks, he holds free pottery classes for village kids during every holiday. A group of volunteer blood donors in our city has existed for twelve years. All members are ordinary workers, students and housewives. They take turns to go to blood stations every month to donate blood.
At first, many people worried that blood donation would harm their health and looked down on these volunteers. But the team kept carrying on their work. They also go to schools and communities to share popular science knowledge about blood donation, so more citizens join them year by year.
The team leader Ms Zhao says they do not want praise or rewards. They learn a lot from the story of peanuts in our textbook: true value does not lie in attractive fame, but in silent contributions to others. Many patients get chances to recover because of their donated blood. Every time they receive thank-you letters from hospitals, they feel fully satisfied with their long-term efforts. The small group’s lasting devotion warms the whole city.

Ordinary people, shining hearts
Carrying on local pottery creation makes Jiang Tao an ordinary but great person. I am deeply moved by his long-term persistence.
Unlike many young people who chase attractive high-paying city jobs, he devotes all his energy to researching traditional clay craft and developing new pottery styles. At first, villagers compared his craft work with profitable jobs and thought it brought little income, but he made up his mind to stick to this folk art. Just like the peanuts we learnt about in our textbook, he never chases fancy fame or public praise. He only wants to carry on local folk culture and offer free pottery lessons for village children.
From him, I learn that the true beauty of life lies in quiet devotion to valuable traditions, not wealth or praise.
