I took up baking when I was twelve. At that time I was working on my school bakery project with my classmates. I tried a few times, but I wasn’t very successful. My parents advised I learn from my grandmother, who later gave me her recipe (食谱) and instructions as well. After two years’ practice, I was able to make delicious bread. I have come to realize making bread means a lot to me, although it takes a long time.
To make bread, others usually use quick-rise yeast (酵母), but I don’t. Every Saturday morning, after mixing a proper amount of water with flour, sugar, etc., I take time to wait for the dough (面团) to rise. This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.
Baking does require great patience. In my hands, the dough is slowly growing. It’s becoming softer. I can feel the change, which connects me to something quite different from the modern way of living. To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience. It certainly takes more time than buying bread from a store, but I enjoy it.
I’ve stuck with my grandmother’s recipe without making any change. Now this tradition has continued for years. Sometimes, in order to fit it in, I have to change my schedule. But I have never considered giving it up.
By the time my children get home from school, the bread has been baked and cooled. They step into the house and the first thing they do is to take a deep breath of the warm, honeyed air. My bread-baking has also helped them to slow down and understand the value of taking their time and leading an unhurried life.
5. What makes the writer’s bread-making different from others’?
A. She mixes more flour with water.
B. She refuses to use quick-rise yeast.
C. She spends less time on the dough.
D. She adds special honey to the dough.
6. Which word best describes life in modern times according to the writer?
A. Relaxing. B. Exciting. C. Fast. D. Happy.
7. What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The bread-baking with the grandmother’s recipe
B. The change of the writer’s daily schedule
C. The idea of giving up bread-baking
D. The plan of teaching kids to bake
8. What does the writer want to teach her children to do?
A. Do things in a slow way.
B. Bake bread at an early age.
C. Be thankful for parents’ work.
D. Get home from school in time.
C
What does it mean to be green? Green is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. Buying a green product is a small step everyone can take. Deciding whether a product is green, however, isn’t always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product even after it’s of no use. Here is what we may keep in mind.
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. What is it made of? Are there any harmful chemicals in it? Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.
Packaging is important. How is a product packaged? Is it over-packaged? We’d better choose glass, metal and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unpacked products whenever possible.
Location (地点) matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? Think about how much energy was used to get it to us. Try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmers, shop at markets and buy fruits in season. Buying from stores near our houses is also a good choice, because we can go there without driving a car.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural”, but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible.
The greenest thing is certainly the one we don’t buy. Things like food and clothing are necessary for life. But many others are not. Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store and doing without. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces waste and keeps the planet healthy.
9. What can we learn about green products from the passage?
A. They are always made of unnatural materials.
B. They are good for people’s physical health.
C. They usually have complex and over-packaging.
D. They are more expensive than common products.
10. Why does the writer advise buying food from local farmers or nearby stores?
A. Because local food is more delicious and cheaper.
B. Because it saves energy used for transportation.
C. Because local farmers grow more natural food.
D. Because nearby stores have more green products.
11. The words “be taken with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 5 probably mean “________”
A. be accepted without doubt
B. be discussed widely
C. be doubted rather than fully trusted
D. be remembered for a long time
12. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Buying Green B. Recycling Waste
C. Keeping Healthy D. Reducing Energy Use
D
Have you ever wondered how to make your sleep more restful? Sleep scientist Dr. Rebecca Spencer has spent 10 years studying this question. She explains, “Modern life with its man-made lights, screens, and 24-hour schedules has disrupted (打乱) our natural sleep patterns.” Studies show Americans now sleep one hour less per night than in the 1940s. This loss harms both physical and mental health. “When we’re tired”, says Dr. Spencer, “we can’t deal with pain well, connect with others, or even think clearly.”
Sleep isn’t just about how much you get—quality matters too. The most important stage is deep sleep. During this stage, the brain produces slow, powerful waves called delta waves (δ波). These waves help store memories, repair cells, and keep clear thinking. Sadly, deep sleep gets less with age. “Delta waves act like a marker of youth”, Dr. Spencer notes, “When we lose delta waves, it’s harder to learn and stay healthy.”
To improve deep sleep, Dr. Spencer tried countless methods, but saw little success. Then, she met Dr. Dmitry Gerashchenko, a Harvard-researcher. He shared a German study showing that playing certain sounds during sleep could increase delta waves. Dr. Gerashchenko explains, “These sounds match the brain’s rhythm (节奏) in deep sleep, helping it produce more refreshing (恢复精神的) waves.”
The team designed an experiment. The volunteers wore sensors (传感器) to check their deep sleep, and soft sounds were used during the experiment. Even though they didn’t notice the sounds, their brains produced stronger delta waves. “The results were clear”, says Dr. Spencer, “This method helped people sleep more deeply without waking them up.”
While the technology is still developing, it offers hope. Imagine a small device helping you wake up full of energy! For now, Dr. Spencer advises: reduce screen time before bed, avoid exciting exercise and create a calm sleep environment.
13. According to Dr. Spencer, what is a major cause of disrupted sleep patterns in modern life?
A. Lack of exercise. B. Increased work pressure.
C. Poor eating habits. D. Man-made lights and screens.
14. What can we infer about delta waves from the passage?
A. They are more common in older people.
B. They are closely related to learning ability.
C. They help people wake up easily during sleep.
D. They disappear completely when people get tired.
15. What was special about Dr. Gerashchenko’s method to improve deep sleep?
A. It required volunteers to change their sleeping time.
B. It required exercise regularly before going to bed.
C. It used certain sounds matching the brain’s rhythm.
D. It focused on reducing screen time completely.
16. Why does the author mention “a small device” in the last paragraph?
A. To warn about using machines too much.
B. To explain why natural sleep is important.
C. To show problems with today’s technology.
D. To describe how sleep improves in the future.

When you look at a mountain with snow on the top, it looks so beautiful. But that can change very quickly if an avalanche happens.
An avalanche is quite a lot of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, usually on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at speeds of 96 km/h to 129 km/h.
Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of humans, like climbers and snowmobiles (雪地摩托). Strong winds, earthquakes, and even animals can also make them happen.
Avalanches happen all year round. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Alps and the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When it happens, the fast-moving snow, ice and rocks can cover people, all the houses and villages along the way. The snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold.
However, what can we do to keep safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Education and the right training can help. They can give us useful advice. For example, never start climbing when the snow begins melting (融化), especially in spring. Avalanches may happen in this season at any minute. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Bring useful tools, like a beacon (信标) to help others find you. Phones sometimes don’t work on mountains. Keeping quiet on the mountains is also important.
Anyway, avalanches are part of nature. We need to have respect for the mountains and weather all the time.
