One day, the lion wanted to eat his three ministers (大臣)—a bear, a fox and a rabbit, because he hadn’t eaten meat for long. So he thought of a trick. He opened his mouth and called the bear to tell him what it smelled like. “Your Majesty, the smell in your mouth is very unpleasant. It is fishy and smelly,” the bear said honestly. The lion was very angry and said the bear had insulted (侮辱) him. So he punished the bear and ate him up. Then the lion called the fox to smell it. When the fox saw what had happened to the bear, he tried to please the lion. He said to the lion, “Ah! Your Majesty, the smell in your mouth is very pleasant. It is like a sweet wine or a fine perfume.” But the lion was very angry again. He said that the fox was a flatterer (马屁精), and that he must be bad for the country. Then he punished the fox and ate him, too. Finally, the lion asked the rabbit what it smelled. The rabbit replied, “Your Majesty, I am so sorry! I have a stuffy nose (鼻塞) from a recent cold and now I can’t smell anything. If you allow me to go home and rest for a few days, I will be at your service when I get better.” The lion found no excuse, so he let the rabbit go home. The rabbit escaped and saved his life. C In 2024, the phrase “City bu city?” is very popular among young people. It means “Is this fashionable or not?” More and more people are finding the humor in phrases like this. In fact, humor is a common language, but each country or culture has its own style. A great example of this is Australia. In Australia, people enjoy making fun of each other as a way to joke around or relax. For example, “What happened to your hair? It looks like a bird’s nest (窝).” In other cultures, saying something like this might be impolite, as it means the loss of face or dignity (尊严). However, in Australia, such jokes show they are close because the closer you are to someone, the more honest you might be. Another key part of Australian humor is self-deprecation (自嘲). An Australian might say, “When I sing, it sounds like two cats fighting on the street.” Australians enjoy making fun of themselves. This way of making other people laugh shows they don’t take themselves too seriously, which makes them more friendly. Sarcasm (讽刺) is also a popular form of humor in Australia. A tour guide might joke with a straight face, “On our last shark-watching tour, we set off with 20 passengers, but only five came back. I really have no idea what happened to the other 15 people.” Tourists unfamiliar with Australian humor might believe this is a serious statement, imagining that the missing passengers were eaten by sharks! Humor is a part of human nature. It might be different among countries, but once you get to understand it, you’ll find it very enjoyable. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 11. What does the writer use to introduce the topic of humor? A. A story. B. A joke. C. A question. D. An example. 12. Why do Australians make fun of each other? A. To show politeness. B. I can’t dance; I have two left feet. C. If she’s here on time, I’ll eat my hat! D. A hot bath made me feel like a million dollars. 14. What can we infer from the tour guide’s joke according to Paragraph 4? A. No passengers were actually missing. B. All passengers should come back within 15 minutes. C. Some passengers were eaten by sharks. D. He warned tourists to stay away from sharks. 15. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text? A. To encourage readers to be humorous. B.
