第一节 阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
In China, when you refuse someone, he or she may say he or she eats a bowl of door-closing thick soup. In Chinese, it is called “吃闭门羹”. What is the story behind this saying?
It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there lived a beautiful woman named Shi Feng. Many young men wanted to marry her. But Shi was hard to impress. She asked her admirers (追求者) to write poems and show them to her. She did this to see how talented they were.
If Shi liked someone’s poems, she would agree to meet him. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t meet him. But then, to be polite, she would at least give him a bowl of “geng” to eat.
“Geng” is a type of thick soup. It is usually made with grain, fruit or vegetables.
As time passed, “eating a bowl of thick soup” began to mean “being refused”. The dish was also nicknamed“door-closing thick soup”, since Shi would not open her door for the people who received the dish.
But there is a twist to this story. “Door-closing thick soup” was said to be so tasty that more people started coming to Shi’s door— not to marry her, but to have a taste of the soup!
16.What kind of people would Shi agree to meet?
A.People who were honest. B.People who were good-looking.
C.People who were rich. D.People who were talented.
17.What situation is having “door-closing thick soup” used to describe?
A.A situation in which someone cannot open a door. B.A situation in which someone wants to get married.
C.A situation in which someone is refused by others. D.A situation in which someone wants to drink soup.
18.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.An ancient beauty named Shi Feng. B.How to make “door-closing thick soup”.
C.How ancient people refused others. D.The story behind the saying “吃闭门羹”.
【答案】16.D 17.C 18.D

【详解】16.根据第二段“how talented they were”和第三段中“If she liked someone’s poems, she would agree to meet him.”可判断,她会同意与有才华的人见面。
17.根据第五段第一句“eating a bowl of thick soup began to mean ‘being refused’”,吃闭门羹本义指代被他人拒绝的场景,匹配C选项描述。
18.根据第一段尾句“What is the story behind this saying?”,全文围绕开篇问题,完整讲解“吃闭门羹”俗语背后的典故故事,契合主旨。

The Art of Patience
In our modern world, patience seems to be disappearing. We want everything instantly — instant coffee, instant noodles, instant information. We get frustrated when a website takes more than two seconds to load or when we have to wait in line for more than five minutes. But patience is actually a valuable skill that can improve many aspects of our lives.
Learning to wait is difficult, especially for teenagers who are used to getting what they want quickly. But practicing patience can bring surprising benefits. Students who are patient tend to perform better on exams because they take their time and avoid careless mistakes. People who are patient in relationships have stronger bonds because they listen more and react less. Even physical health can improve — studies show that impatient people have higher blood pressure and are more prone to stress-related illnesses.
Patience is especially important when learning new skills. Mastering a musical instrument, a new language, or a sport requires months or even years of practice. Without patience, many people would give up before they see results. The great violinist Itzhak Perlman once said, “If you want to build a violin, you don’t start with the strings — you start with the wood.” This reminds us that good things take time and that we need to trust the process.
One way to develop patience is to practice mindfulness — paying attention to the present moment without judgment. When we focus on what is happening now instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past, we naturally slow down and become more patient. Simple activities like breathing exercises or meditation can help train our minds to be more patient.
Patience is not about doing nothing or being passive. It’s about recognising that some things take time and being willing to wait for them. It’s about having faith in the process, even when we can’t see the end result. In a world that values speed, patience is a rare and precious quality. Those who master it will find that it enriches every area of their lives.
19.What does the passage suggest about patience in modern society?
A.It is becoming more common.
B.It is fading as people want results at once.
C.It is only important for older people.
D.It is no longer a valuable skill.
20.What benefit of patience is mentioned for students?
A.They get better grades on tests.
B.They make more friends.
C.They learn musical instruments faster.
D.They have better physical health.
21.What does Itzhak Perlman’s quote about building a violin mean?
A.Violins are difficult to build.
B.You need good materials to build anything.
C.Great achievements require time and patience.
D.Music is the most important art form.
22.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.People should reject modern technology.
B.Patience is a skill that must be cultivated through practice.
C.Teenagers are naturally more patient than adults.
D.Speed is more important than quality.

Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response (反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means to apologize (道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as native speakers and as students of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps (碰撞) into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict (冲突). So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter: “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.
23.What does the underlined phrase “take on” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.从事 B.雇用 C.呈现 D.拿起
24.The example in the third paragraph is used to ________.
A.describe a situation that people should avoid

C.explain why people should say sorry to each other
D.show how polite British people are
25.The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to ________.
A.apologize B.calm a situation down
C.explain what you’re thinking about D.ask a waiter to bring something
26.What might be a good title for the passage?
A.“I’m Sorry” Is More Than Just an Apology
B.Traditional British Manners
C.How to Best Catch Others’ Attention
D.Finding a Way out of a Difficult Situation
【答案】23.C 24.B 25.D 26.A

【详解】23.根据第一段语境“This phrase has become such a common response that it has taken on a lot of meanings.”根据文章可知“sorry”不只是道歉,还用于缓和矛盾、礼貌搭话,拥有多重文化含义,C项“呈现”(具有、显现)符合文意,指该短语呈现出多种含义。
24.根据第三段首句“But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this:…”可知,随后列举的男人撞女人的例子是为了具体说明“对不起”在英国有另一种含义,是一种文化表达。
25.根据最后一段“It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter.”

Some people might think that young people are too young to know what they want. But people like Lu Kaigang proved (证明) them all wrong.
Lu, 23, a fashion model from China, grew up walking the roads in a village, Guangxi. Now, he walks on some of the largest fashion catwalks (T型台) in the world.
He found his interest when he was young. “I have had a supermodel dream since I was 10 while I was still in primary school. I saw a fashion show on TV and I felt it was so cool to do that ,” Lu said. Although Lu didn’t have much money or any professional (职业的) training, it didn’t stop him from chasing his dream. Lu collected pieces of cloth from the factory he worked at and made them into outfits (服装). In 2018, he started making videos of himself wearing his handmade outfits and posted them online.
Lu has what money can’t buy: determination (决心) and self-belief. “The early videos I posted didn’t get many ‘likes’,” Lu said. “But I believed what I was doing would be popular in the world someday.”
Lu quit his job at the factory and went back to his hometown to spend time learning how to be a supermodel. He also began to use other materials (材料) for outfits, like plastic bags and kept posting videos of himself online.
About one year later, Lu’s hard work paid off and he became an online star. He’s not just your common model. His one-of-a-kind clothes show off his talent and creativity, and his videos are mostly filmed on village dirty roads, adding a special and fresh background.

28.划线词所在句子为“Lu quit his job at the factory and went back to his hometown to spend time learning…”,结合语境,为了全身心回家乡学习模特技能,他需要离开或放弃原来的工作。因此“quit”意为“辞去、放弃”,对应“Gave up”。
29.根据文章内容梳理时间线:第三段“I have had a supermodel dream since I was 10…”提到10岁时萌生模特梦想(②);第三段后半部分“Lu collected pieces of cloth from the factory he worked at…In 2018, he started making videos…”提到在工厂工作期间收集布料并发布视频(①);第五段“Lu quit his job…and went back to his hometown…”提到发布视频后辞职回乡专门学习(④);第二段“Now, he walks on some of the largest fashion catwalks…”说明现在走上大型T台(③)。因此正确顺序为②①④③。

What Makes a Meaningful Life?

A.People who were honest. B.People who were good-looking.
C.People who were rich. D.People who were talented.
17.What situation is having “door-closing thick soup” used to describe?

C

A.apologize B.calm a situation down
C.explain what you’re thinking about D.ask a waiter to bring something
26.What might be a good title for the passage?
A.“I’m Sorry” Is More Than Just an Apology

C.How to Best Catch Others’ Attention
D.Finding a Way out of a Difficult Situation

In summer, the high heat always makes you feel uncomfortable. Have you ever thought about getting through the hot summer without air conditioning (空调)? Actually, to stay cool and comfortable, you can try lots of natural ways, including water, fans, cool drinks, and more. Here let’s see how to use water to cool down.
Drink water more often. Your body will feel cooler if you do that. Try drinking at least eight bottles of water every day. Adding orange, lemon, or tomato pieces to your water makes it more refreshing. 31
