On the last days of July, I moved to a flat in Brixton and joined those with a garden for the first time.
Before moving, I lived in a flat surrounded by a small plot of woodland nearby. There were a good six weeks during which the dawn chorus was so loud that waking up at 5 am was a daily routine. Watching the birds became a soap opera I was deeply invested in. In Brixton, though, all I could hear was traffic.
Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space.
It was for this reason that I turned to gardening. I’m not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony, four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. The only garden I had previously had access to as an adult, in Hackney at the start of my career, was used for parties, barbecues and playing with the neighbor’s cat.
Filled with blind enthusiasm and curiosity, I picked up plants from supermarkets and flower markets, often killing them out of love and then starting all over again. I often spent whole weekends in that small space. The balcony had a good view: one of London’s shining skylines beneath high skies that changed color and cloud by the minute. But it was so small that you had to look closely, and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver (动摇), it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.
4.What is one challenge the author faced after moving to Brixton?
A.Dealing with a noisy neighbor. B.Finding a suitable place for parties.
C.Adjusting to the lack of green space. D.Getting used to the city’s heavy traffic.
5.What was the author’s initial experience with gardening?
A.She learned gardening all by herself.
B.She had a natural talent for gardening.
C.She had a large garden in her childhood home.
D.She started gardening in a small woodland area.
6.What did the author learn from her gardening experience in Camberwell?
A.The key to being a successful gardener.
B.The way to master gardening on her own.
C.The importance of looking closely at nature.
D.The method of getting along well with neighbors.
7.What would be the best title for the text?
A.How I Overcame Challenges in Gardening B.How I Adapted Myself to Life in Cities
C.How I Turned Gardening into a Hobby D.How I Found Nature in Cities
【答案】4.C 5.A 6.C 7.D
由文章第三段“Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space. (虽然我清楚地知道城市不是自然主义的大本营,自然总是在那里等着我去寻找,但我还是花了一段时间来适应我必须步行五分钟以上才能找到一块绿地的事实。)”可知,作者搬到Brixton后面临的一个挑战是适应缺乏绿色空间的情况。故选C。
5.细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“I’m not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony, four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. (我不是受过正规训练的园丁;20多岁时,我在坎伯韦尔一座山上四层楼高的混凝土阳台上自学。)”可知,作者最初是自学园艺的。故选A。
根据文章最后一段中“But it was so small that you had to look closely, and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. (但它太小了,你必须仔细观察,仔细观察是享受大自然的重要组成部分,无论你在哪里找到它。)”可以推断出,作者学到了仔细观察自然的重要性。故选C。
7.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第三段“Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space. (虽然我清楚地知道城市不是自然主义的大本营,自然总是在那里等着我去寻找,但我还是花了一段时间来适应我必须步行五分钟以上才能找到一块绿地的事实。)”和最后一段中“And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver (动摇), it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.(在阳台上,我可以关注一些比我的事业、人际关系或自我意识更重要的事情。当这三者都开始动摇时,正是园艺——以及更广泛的大自然——让我找到了一种新的生活方式。)”可知,整篇文章围绕着作者如何在城市生活中寻找和接近自然,特别是在自己有限的空间里通过园艺活动找到与自然的联系。因此最合适的标题是“How I Found Nature in Cities (我如何在城市中发现自然)”。
C
Teaching is a caregiving profession. We all have that one teacher who inspired us to aim higher, choose a certain career path, or simply discover our passions. This role comes with not only many satisfactions, but lots of pressure to hold yourselves to a higher standard. The responsibilities of teachers only increased during the pandemic, so teachers had to show compassion for students and parents — often without expecting the same treatment. That’s why it’s so easy to think of teachers as selfless people that give it all for future generations.
However, where does that leave teachers? Educators are taught to do many things, but their education is usually lacking in addressing the emotional problems of being a teacher. During the pandemic, I failed to make my online classes as enjoyable as possible for my students. Later, it turned out that other teachers were having problems as well. I had zero reasons to feel so isolated in my experience. What I needed was self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, “Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.” In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.
Being a teacher comes with so many expectations and responsibilities. In theory, nobody’s perfect, but there’s great pressure to be a good role model, educator, mentor, etc. The inner critic has so much more “material” to work with when you’ re in front of a class. It’s no wonder that in stressful situations, it’s harder to control your self-talk. For example, if you fail to upload a lesson on time, your inner critic will jump at the chance to say, “You’ re so forgetful, and I can’t believe you did this.”
It’s no secret that teachers are usually under a lot of stress. A part of the solution can be incorporating self-compassion into teaching, which can not only enhance a satisfactory job but also have a good effect on students.
8.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Teachers’ dedicating themselves to the cause of teaching.
B.Teachers’ showing great compassion for themselves.
C.Teachers’ suffering from unknown mental pressure.
D.Teachers’ failing to learn something in their careers.
9.Which of the following fits with Dr. Kristin Neff’s view on self-compassion?
A.Self-compassion is hard for teachers to learn.
B.Self-compassion helps teachers understand students well.
C.The more self-compassion you have, the more benefits you’ll get.
D.The more you understand others, the more self-compassion you’ll have.
10.What can be inferred from the example given in paragraph 3?
A.Teachers’ responsibilities matter. B.Teachers have a lot of work pressure.
C.Teachers play a big role in students’ life. D.It’s normal for teachers to do wrong things.
11.What is mainly talked about in the text?
A.The importance of teachers’ self-compassion.
B.The suggestions on raising future generations.
C.The necessity of reducing the burden on teachers.
D.The approaches to teachers’ growth and development.

第一段中“That’s why it’s so easy to think of teachers as selfless people that give it all for future generations.(这就是为什么很容易把老师看作是无私的人,他们为下一代付出了一切)”指出老师是无私的人,他们为下一代付出了一切;根据指代关系和第二段中“However, where does that leave teachers? Educators are taught to do many things, but their education is usually lacking in addressing the emotional problems of being a teacher.(然而,那对教师来说意味着什么?教育者被教导要做很多事情,但他们的教育通常缺乏解决作为教师所面临的情感问题)”可知,尽管教育者为下一代付出了一切,但他们自己却通常缺乏对自身情感问题的关注。由此可推断出,指示代词“that”指代的是上文中“老师们无私地为教学事业奉献一切”的这一行为。故选A项。
根据第二段中“According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, ‘Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.’ In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.(该领域的主要研究人员克里斯汀·内夫博士说:“自我同情只是向内的同情。”换句话说,就是对自己表现出你通常对学生或生活中其他人表现出的同样的关心和理解。有些人的自我同情比其他人更多,努力获得更多的自我同情可以在你生活的方方面面帮助你)”可知,克里斯汀·内夫博士认为自我同情就是对自己的同情,拥有更多的自我同情可以在生活的各个方面帮助你。由此推知,克里斯汀·内夫博士会赞同“The more self-compassion you have, the more benefits you’ll get.(你拥有的自我同情越多,你得到的益处就越多)”。故选C项。
根据第三段中“Being a teacher comes with so many expectations and responsibilities. In theory, nobody’s perfect, but there’s great pressure to be a good role model, educator, mentor, etc.(作为一名教师,有很多期望和责任。从理论上讲,没有人是完美的,但要成为一个好的榜样、教育者、导师等等,压力是很大的)”和“For example, if you fail to upload a lesson on time, your inner critic will jump at the chance to say, ‘You’ re so forgetful, and I can’t believe you did this.’(例如,如果你没有按时上传课程,你内心的批评者会抓住机会说:‘你太健忘了,我不相信你竟然会这样做。’)”
通读全文,特别是根据第二段中“What I needed was self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, ‘Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.’ In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.(我需要的是自我同情。该领域的主要研究人员克里斯汀·内夫博士说:“自我同情只是向内的同情。”换句话说,就是对自己表现出你通常对学生或生活中其他人表现出的同样的关心和理解。有些人的自我同情比其他人更多,努力获得更多的自我同情可以在你生活的方方面面帮助你)”和最后一段“It’s no secret that teachers are usually under a lot of stress. A part of the solution can be incorporating self-compassion into teaching, which can not only enhance a satisfactory job but also have a good effect on students.(众所周知,教师通常承受着很大的压力。解决方案的一部分可以是将自我同情融入教学中,这不仅可以提升工作的满意度,而且对学生也有好处)”可知,文章主要指出教师需要关注自身的情感问题,通过自我同情来应对压力,同时也能对教学产生积极影响,即论述了教师自我同情的重要性。故选A项。

Franz Katka (卡夫卡) died 100 years ago with his literary works unnoticed. He had instructed his friend Max Brod to burn his unpublished works. Brod did not: he believed Kafka to be a literary genius and published his late friend’s writing. In other words, Brod decided that Kafka’s stories belonged not to the late author, but to the public.
Brod’s dilemma echoes today. People generate more data than ever, which, unlike physical bodies, does not disappear. According to Carl Ohman, a Swedish political scientist, this condition makes the modern world “post-mortal” (死后的) . “Living in the post-mortal condition is to constantly find oneself in the shoes of Max Brod”, he observes.
The digital era has reshaped humans’ relationship with the dead—as seen in social media reminders for birthdays of dead individuals. Such reminders are to grow more common: Mr. Ohman’s research has found that on Facebook the dead may well outnumber the living within 40 years. Advanced technology enables a continued relationship with the dead, such as Amazon’s development of a feature for Alexa, virtual assistant, to speak in the voice of a lost relative. Startups have used data to make chatbots of the dead - to strengthen users’ commercial relationship, Mr. Ohman points out
At the root of Ohman’s book The Afterlife of Data is various complex philosophical questions. To whom do the dead’s data belong? Are data something people create, or a digital analogue (类比) to a physical body? If data are a digital form of the body, what responsibilities does the living have? These are not merely questions for individuals but for society. After all, historians often study the diaries of the dead. Their writers may have preferred to keep them private, but the light that such documents can shine on humanity’s past outweighs the late owner’s wishes. Mr. Ohman notes that data constitute “the biggest database of human behaviour in the history of our species”. And he urges that the social media firms should think twice in terms of how they handle digital remains.
12.What is the function of paragraph 1?
A.To emphasize Kafka’s literary talent. B.To lead to the discussion on data handling.
C.To praise the act to publish Kafka’s works. D.To write an introduction for Ohman’s book.
13.Why do people buy Alexa, the virtual assistant?
A.To create a digital database. B.To control devices by voice.
C.To access information quickly. D.To communicate with the dead.
14.What problem will people face in post-mortal world according to the passage?
A.How to manage the dead’s data. B.How to realize the dead’s wishes.
C.How to protect the dead’s privacy. D.How to restore the dead’s belongings.
15.Which of the following will Mr. Ohman probably agree with?
A.Data should be in the possession of individuals.
B.Historians should control access to digital remains.
C.Data’s historical value is more important than the dead’s will.
D.Social media firms should be fined for misuse of digital remains.

根据第一段“Franz Katka (卡夫卡) died 100 years ago with his literary works unnoticed. He had instructed his friend Max Brod to burn his unpublished works. Brod did not: he believed Kafka to be a literary genius and published his late friend’s writing. In other words, Brod decided that Kafka’s stories belonged not to the late author, but to the public.(弗朗茨·卡夫卡100年前去世,他的文学作品无人注意。他曾指示他的朋友马克斯·布罗德烧掉他未发表的作品。布罗德不这么认为:他相信卡夫卡是一位文学天才,并出版了他已故朋友的作品。换句话说,布罗德认为卡夫卡的故事不属于这位已故作家,而是属于公众)”以及第二段“Brod’s dilemma echoes today. People generate more data than ever, which, unlike physical bodies, does not disappear.(布罗德的困境在今天得到了回应。人们产生的数据比以往任何时候都多,而这些数据与身体不同,不会消失)”可知,第一段通过讲述卡夫卡的故事,引出了关于数据处理的讨论,即如何处理死者留下的数据。故选B项。
13.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Advanced technology enables a continued relationship with the dead, such as Amazon’s development of a feature for Alexa, virtual assistant, to speak in the voice of a lost relative.(先进的技术使人们能够与死者保持持续的关系,比如Amazon为虚拟助手Alexa开发了一项功能,可以用失去亲人的声音说话)”可知,人们会购买虚拟助手Alexa是为了与死者沟通。故选D项。
根据最后一段“To whom do the dead’s data belong? Are data something people create, or a digital analogue (类比) to a physical body? If data are a digital form of the body, what responsibilities does the living have? These are not merely questions for individuals but for society.(死者的数据属于谁?数据是人类创造的东西,还是物理身体的数字模拟?如果数据是身体的数字形式,那么生者有什么责任?这些不仅仅是个人的问题,也是社会的问题)”可知,“死后世界”将会面临的一个问题,即如何处理死者的数据。故选A项。
根据最后一段“After all, historians often study the diaries of the dead. Their writers may have preferred to keep them private, but the light that such documents can shine on humanity’s past outweighs the late owner’s wishes. Mr. Ohman notes that data constitute “the biggest database of human behaviour in the history of our species”.(毕竟,历史学家经常研究死者的日记。它们的作者可能更愿意将它们保密,但这些文件对人类过去的启示超过了已故所有者的意愿。欧曼指出,这些数据构成了“人类历史上最大的人类行为数据库”)”可知,Ohman很可能会同意数据的历史价值比死者的意愿更重要。故选C项。

The Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Student Development
Extracurricular activities significantly contribute to personal and social development, preparing students for future challenges. Working towards a common goal enhances their personal ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. 16 . When students engage in group projects, they learn the importance of responsibility and can build lasting relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
Moreover, extracurricular activities provide a platform for students to discover and pursue their passions. Whether it’s in arts, science, or community service, these experiences allow students to explore varied interests outside the classroom. 17 This exploration helps students develop a sense of identity and purpose, crucial for their personal growth and decision-making skills.
Despite these benefits, balancing extracurricular activities with academic responsibilities can be challenging. Students often face the dilemma of managing their time efficiently to meet both academic and extracurricular commitments. 18 Time management becomes an essential skill, enabling students to prioritize and maintain balance in their lives.
Furthermore, being involved in activities outside school can expand a student’s social network. It offers opportunities to connect with peers who have similar interests, fostering friendships that extend beyond school. 19 These connections can lead to a supportive network that provides encouragement and advice during challenging times.
Educators and parents should encourage students to participate in extra curricular activities strategically. Guiding students to choose activities that align with their interests and potential career paths can enhance their overall educational experience.
20 This guidance helps students prepare for future academic and career aspirations, making the transition smoother.
A.So learning to set priorities becomes essential.
B.They become expert in handling diverse real-world cases.
C.Additionally, it can improve students’ academic performance indirectly.
D.Therefore, students often find these experiences rewarding and enriching.
E.Similarly, such. interactions can broaden their better understanding of the world

故填which。
故填whether。
故填To prove。
故填in。

Dear editor,
I’m writing to recommend my favorite movie, “The Shawshank Redemption”, for your new movie column. This 1994 classic, directed by Frank Darabont, stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. It tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker wrongly convicted of murder, and his unwavering hope for freedom.
The reason I love this movie is its powerful themes of hope, friendship, and perseverance. It shows that no matter how difficult life gets, as long as we hold on to hope, we can overcome any obstacle. The performances are outstanding, and the storyline is both touching and inspiring. I believe it's a must-see for all movie lovers.

“Why did she let out my secrets?” I thought regretfully. I’ll always remember that day, when I was so surprised by all the strange looks everyone was giving me. Those thoughts will always stay with me. And I couldn’t believe I would lose the friendship of the person I trusted the most.
Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. I don’t know what it was, but something unique about her drew me to her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates. But after a few months, I found we had a lot in common and that we got along well with each other. We were like best friends. So, I never expected her to hurt me in such a big way.
I don’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. She made the matter bigger than it was, adding her own description of it and telling everyone at school. It hurt me seriously. After she gave away my secrets, everyone at school started laughing at me, looking at me and giggling (咯咯地笑) whenever I passed by. After this terrible situation, I changed schools. Sally called me many times, but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken.
I tried hard to heal from the scars (伤痕) she left on my heart. I started a new life. After five years, my life went back to the way it was, with new friends. But one day, I met Anna at the market. She was my classmate from 3rd grade. She told me that Sally wasn’t the one who brought my secrets to light. Mary was. Mary was our school’s big mouth who always wanted to stick her nose into other people’s business.
I was at a loss. I wished I could have asked Sally about this. I wished I could go back in time and fix my mistakes. I was struggling. Maybe I should give Sally a call.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A few days later, I gathered the courage to pick up the phone.

I have learned a lesson from the experience.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days later, I gathered the courage to pick up the phone. My heart pounded as I dialed Sally’s number. When she answered, there was a moment of silence. Then, I took a deep breath and said, “Sally, I heard the truth. I’m sorry for not answering your calls.” Sally’s voice was shaky as she replied, “I’m glad you called. I’ve been so worried.” We talked for a long time, and gradually, the ice between us began to melt.
I have learned a lesson from the experience. Trust is fragile and once broken, it’s hard to repair. But with communication and understanding, there can be a chance for people to make up with each other. This incident has taught me to be more cautious in sharing my secrets and to give people a chance to explain. We can’t always jump to conclusions. Life is full of misunderstandings, and it’s up to us to find the courage to face them and work towards solving them.
