Enric Sala isn't a medical doctor, but he is regularly writing prescriptions ()His
patient?The ocean.The prescription?Marine protected areas (MPAs)-a designated safe
zone for ocean life where fishing, mining and other destructive human activities are banned.
As news of coral bleaching, overfishing and ocean warming events dominate the headlines, the
former university professor quit academia to become a full-time conservationist, advocating
finding a cure for an ocean that,at times, can appear on its deathbed.
Since 2008,Sala has built a team of scientists, filmmakers, policy professionals and
communicators to form Pristine Seas-an initiative that explores marine ecosystems to help
protect the world's most vital ocean areas. On their expeditions, scientists and filmmakers are
invited by governments to spend weeks at a time at sea, collecting films and data to submit to
local government leaders so they can determine which parts of their ocean are most important
to protect.
Sala,a man who is equally at ease slipping on a wetsuit for a dive as he is donning a suit
and tie for fundraising events or meetings with country leaders, understands that to truly
inspire people to enact marine protections, you have to bring people close enough to care.
"When we take government leaders down hundreds of meters underwater,we can open a
window to their world that they've never seen before,"Sala says."You can see the
amazement and pride on their faces.
Perhaps MPAs'biggest opponents are industrial fishing lobbyists (keen on keeping
oceans open to large-scale fishing efforts. They argue that MPAs would hold back economic
development and decrease fisheries'productivity.
Sala and his colleague demonstrated that within MPAs,not only do target species bounce
back, with an increase in fish biomass of more than 500%,but entire ecosystems are also
restored. The populations then "spill over"into nearby unprotected fishing grounds."Ocean
protection and fishing have always had the same goal,"Sala says.
24.What is MPAs meant to do according to paragraph 1?
A.Seek new habitats for marine life.
B.Explore unknown deep-sea areas.
C.Stop damaging ocean wildlife.
D.Boost coastal fishing business.

A.To test the possibility of MPAs.

D.To touch their hearts and win their support.
26.What is Sala's attitude to the fishing lobbyists'idea?
A.Opposed.
B.Tolerant.
C.Supportive.
D.Unconcerned.

Water shortages, rising temperatures, and droughts caused by climate change have an
immense impact on agriculture-and today's farmers are desperate to find solutions. In the
western United States, some are turning to dry-farming,a form of agriculture that doesn't
require irrigation.
Dry-farmed plants take moisture (stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from
above.All farmers need is a wet,rainy season,followed by a dry growing season,as well as
some methods like placing a layer of mulch on top of soil to keep moisture, spacing
plants more widely, and planting earlier in the season.
According to the Dry Farming Institute,"Dry-farming is a low-input,place-based
approach to producing crops within the constraints of your climate."As the institute defines
it,"A dry-farmed crop is irrigated once or not at all.
Dry-farming is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can save farmers thousands of liters
in water every season-and help maintain a climate-resilient business.And the best part?Dry-
farmed produce is praised for tasting better than irrigated crops, and crops such as tomatoes,
potatoes, squash, corn, watermelon and even grapes, are excellent candidates for dry-
farming. In fact,dry-farming is so game-changing for vineyards (that some areas in
Europe forbid irrigating wine grapes,in order to sweeten them.
Dry-farming is a long-held standard practice,from olive groves in the Mediterranean (
to melon fields in Botswana. In the US,it dates back thousands of years among indigenous
peoples-proving once again that indigenous knowledge is the key to protecting the planet.
"Dry-farming is not just farming-it's our way of life,"said Michael Kotutwa Johnson,
an Indigenous Resiliency specialist at the University of Arizona and member of the Hopi
Tribe."You get to really learn what the environment gives you,and you learn to reward. It's
a beautiful thing, and it's something that needs to be cherished."
28.What is a key feature of dry-farming?

B.To cut the cost of water supply.
C.To popularize local dry-farming
D.To limit excessive grape planting.
30.What can we infer about dry-farming?
A.It is a newly created farming skill.
B.It works equally for all farmlands.
C.It carries ancient native eco-wisdom.
D.It costs much more labor and money.
31.How does Johnson feel about dry-farming?
A.It features modern technology.
B.It is complex for most farmers.
C.It works as a temporary solution.
D.It is a tradition worth preserving.

Most people have done it without thinking. You're trying to hear a quiet sound,so you
shut your eyes, hoping it will help you focus. It feels natural, almost automatic.Cut out one
sense, and sharpen another. That idea has been around for a long time. But that instinct
doesn't always hold up,especially when the world gets loud.In busy,noisy settings,closing
your eyes can actually make it harder to hear what matters.Instead of improving focus,it can
push the brain in the wrong direction.
To see what really happens, researchers designed a simple but telling experiment.
Participants listened to sounds through headphones and background noise played at the same
time.Their job was to adjust the volume until each sound became just audible(听得见的).
The volunteers repeated this task under different visual conditions.Sometimes their eyes were
closed.Other times,they looked at a blank screen.
In later trials, the participants saw images related to the sounds, and finally, videos that
matched what they were hearing. The differences were clear. The brain didn't respond to
sound on its own. What people saw changed what they could hear.
"We found that, unlike popular belief, closing one's eyes actually weakens the ability to
detect these sounds,"said Huang,an expert in the School of Mechanical Engineering at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University."On the contrary, seeing a moving video matching the sound
significantly improves hearing ability.
The participants struggled more when their eyes were closed, especially in noisy
conditions. But when they watched something that matched the sound, their hearing
improved. This wasn't a small shift. It showed that vision and hearing work together more
closely than many people realize.
The story changes in quieter settings.Without much background noise, closing your eyes
can still help.In those moments, reducing what you see may allow the brain to focus more on
very small sounds. But daily life rarely stays quiet.Traffic, conversations, machines, and
constant movement fill most environments with noise. In those situations, keeping your eyes

open may give the brain an edge.
32.What does the underlined word "instinct"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Consequence.
B.Nature.
C.Amazement.
D.Intervention.
33.Why did researchers vary visual conditions in the experiment?
A.To compare impacts on hearing.
B.To test the volunteers'eyesight.
C.To reduce the background noise.
D.To simplify the experimental task
34.What does Huang's statement indicate about hearing sensitivity?
A.It has no relation to settings.
B.It improves without visual aids.
C.It drops when eyes are closed.
D.It remains stable in all settings.
35.What suggestion does the text imply for people in daily noisy life?
A.Ignore visual information.
B.Avoid machines and traffic.
C.Close eyes to focus better.
D.Keep eyes open to aid hearing.

building resilience requires consistent practice.
36.The journey begins with small,
deliberate changes in your daily habits.
Cultivate a growth mindset
Resilient people view adversity as temporary and informational, not as permanent
reflections of their worth.Start by reframing negative thoughts:When you encounter a
setback,ask“What can I learn from this?”rather than“Why me?”_37_

The buyer shouted,"Put it up for auction again!I ll donate the money, too!"Instead of taking the potted orchid
home,he decided to sell the orchid a second time. The crowd erupted in cheers. The potted orchid was sold a second
time, and again, the buyer gave it back to be resold. In the following time, the cycle repeated itself-three,five,ten
times.Again and again, many more buyers gave the orchid back to be resold and donated the money to a baby they
had never met.The bidding turned into a wave of generosity, transforming a simple $70 potted orchid into a golden
opportunity for kindness
By the time the auction ended, the potted orchid had raised an astonishing sum of money. The market, which
was usually filled with the sounds of trade and chatter, was now filled with emotion.Strangers hugged, and tears of
gratitude were shed. When Crystal heard about the donation, she was more than grateful for what all those people did
for her family. She wept, not from despair this time, but from overwhelming relief. She realized that her family was
not walking this dark path alone.Today, her baby Brantley is pulling through the hard period and growing stronger,
his tiny heart beating with the rhythm of a community s love.
