When it comes to Western food, we can easily think of pizza, hamburgers and salad. For Chinese food, we usually think of rice, noodles and soup.
The main difference is that in Western dishes, there is usually a larger piece of meat with some light salad on the side. However, meat is only part of the dish in Chinese cooking. In Chinese dishes, meat and vegetables are usually mixed together in a balanced way.
Western people often see rice as a side dish. But in most Chinese dishes, rice is important, as well as noodles. If we don’t eat rice or noodles in a meal, we may feel like we don’t eat anything. In Western dishes, people use ingredients that taste similar, while Chinese dishes often mix different ingredients together to make the food taste special. That’s why China has eight cuisines (菜系) in total.
However, the taste of the eight cuisines is not always the same. When different cultures come together, people from different countries can share their food and make new dishes. For example, in America, many cooks change some popular Chinese dishes to suit (适合) American tastes. What’s more, mixing food is also popular now.

Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don’t know about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other people and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, don’t be shy about asking the person next to you. It’s better to ask than to be silently uncomfortable and nervous.

“There are many unknowns about the deep ocean,” Du Mengran said, “The best way to know them is to go there, see it and ____16____ it with your heart.”
Called a “deep diver”, the Chinese scientist played an important part in the discovery of the world’s deepest-known animal ecosystem. She was named on Nature’s annual list of 10 people who helped develop ____17____ in 2025.
As we know, most life on Earth depends on sunlight. But the ecosystem found by Du and her team works ____18____. In 2024, she led a team with the Fendouzhe submersible and carried out 24 dives in the northern Pacific Ocean. There, they found a strange ecosystem. ____19____ sunlight, animals get energy from special chemicals that come out of the ocean floor.
Before Du Mengran’s work, nobody had studied these animals in such detail. Several species may even be new to science. The discovery led Du and her team to continue ____20____ dives in nearby areas. Last year, the team found similar ecosystems in the southern Pacific. “We used to think ____21____ could live in such terrible conditions,” she told Wenhui Daily.
Du never gives up ____22____ diving in the sea is hard. For example, the cabin is only 1.8 meters wide, but it has to hold three scientists. Many people would never want to ____23____ such a small space, let alone stay inside it for hours. However, Du feels ____24____ every time she steps inside. She compares the submersible to a time machine that unlocks doors to unknown worlds.
What other ____25____ lie hidden in the dark depths of the ocean? Du and her team are on their way to find out with their efforts.

Thanks to“多亏”、Because of“因为”,无法表达这种替代关系。

When your friend invites you to have dinner with his family in their home, you’re excited about going. But you’re a little worried about it too. The customs in your country are very different from theirs. If you follow a few rules of dinner parties, you will have a good time at the party.
It’s a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drink it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don’t get there early. If you are more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don’t know about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other people and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, don’t be shy about asking the person next to you. It’s better to ask than to be silently uncomfortable and nervous.
If you like the food, say so. Of course, you’ll thank the host and hostess for the meal and for their kindness. It is also a good idea to send a card or a thank-you note the day after.
