Running Together, Learning to Trust — When Mina joined her school's Run Together programme, she expected to hand out water and record times. Instead, the coach paired her with Daniel, a university student who was visually impaired and preparing for a community five-kilometre race. A short tether connected their wrists. Mina's task was to describe turns, warn him about changes in the ground, and help both runners move as one team.
Their first run was difficult. She called “left” after starting to turn, and once pulled the tether sharply when a bicycle appeared. Daniel stopped and explained that a guide should give information early and calmly. He asked Mina not to decide everything for him. “Tell me what is ahead,” he said, “then let me choose how to respond.” Mina realised that guiding was not controlling; it was sharing useful information.
They began again with a shorter goal: two steady laps. Before each run, they agreed on simple signals. “Step up” meant a higher surface, while two quick taps meant slowing down. Mina practised matching Daniel's pace and listened to his breathing. Daniel told her when a signal was confusing. Their times improved slowly, but their confidence grew faster because neither ignored mistakes.
A week before the race, rain left part of the riverside route muddy. Mina chose a narrow path that looked dry, but Daniel's foot caught the edge and he nearly fell. After checking that he was unhurt, they walked the section together. Daniel examined the ground with his cane, and Mina described three possible lines. They selected the widest route, adjusted their signals and completed the next lap safely. The setback became information rather than blame.
On race day, they did not finish among the leading pairs. With five hundred metres left, Daniel increased the pace and Mina matched him without pulling the tether. Crossing the line together felt remarkable. Mina wrote that cooperation was not one person helping another from a position of strength. It was two people contributing different knowledge, accepting corrections and sharing responsibility for a goal. For Daniel, the result mattered, but being heard throughout training mattered as much.
21. What made Mina and Daniel's first run difficult?
A. Rain had made the whole track muddy.
B. Mina gave late signals and pulled the tether suddenly.
C. Daniel refused to slow down near a bicycle.
D. The coach changed their route without warning.
22. Why did the pair restart with a shorter goal?
A. To rebuild coordination in a safe and manageable way.
B. To avoid practising for the community race.
C. To wait until other volunteers joined them.
D. To prove that speed was more important than trust.
23. What does the word “pace” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. A place for resting.
B. A plan for choosing roads.
C. The speed or rate of movement.
D. The distance between two races.
24. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By listing several rules for a competition.
B. By comparing the abilities of two runners.
C. By presenting a problem and the pair's response.
D. By explaining the history of the riverside route.
25. What is the best title idea for the passage?
A. Winning Depends Only on Perfect Signals
B. Shared Trust Turns Training Problems into Progress
C. Volunteer Work Is Easier Than Athletic Training
D. Visually Impaired Runners Should Choose Short Races

D. The distance between two races.

A. By listing several rules for a competition.
