Do you know leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣)? It’s a traditional Chinese art form. It shows the wisdom of many Chinese people through many centuries.
Leaf-vein embroidery is from Guizhou Province. This art form first appeared (出现) during the Song Dynasty. Local people used it to create beautiful artwork and even send messages to each other.
Yang Li, a master (大师) of leaf-vein embroidery, is always working on learning and teaching the skill. Leaf-vein embroidery is very difficult. What do you usually do when you’re on the train? Take a rest, look out of the window or just use your phone? Did you ever think about what other things you could do on the train? Well, some trains in China become a place for learning about Chinese culture (文化).
Tourists on the K7041 train from Harbin to Mohe in Heilongjiang had a chance to meet five artists from the Oroqen (鄂伦春族). Gulayier Ente, one of the artists, dressed in traditional clothes and sang Oroqen songs. The beautiful music made people cheerful. “For me, this experience is wonderful. Being closer to tourists and chatting with them helped us all enjoy ourselves,” said Gulayier.
The train started running in January 2025 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. During the train journey, artists showed their skills like making birch bark (桦树皮) paintings besides singing and dancing. “We can watch special shows and learn about Chinese culture. It’s really exciting!” said Ms. Zhang, a tourist from Guizhou.
In fact, there are more Chinese art shows on trains, including Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing and tea-picking operas (采茶戏) from Guangxi, and so on. Trains go across most areas of China, so they are great for sharing Chinese culture with more people. Different from museums, trains can bring cultural experiences directly to people.

First, artists must carefully choose the best leaves from special plants in the mountains. Then they need to dry the leaves for about 20 days until they become soft. Finally, they draw something beautiful on the leaves and embroider (绣) them. “Each piece takes weeks to finish,” Yang Li said. “The leaves are easy to break, so we can’t make even one small mistake.”
This traditional art form faces big challenges today. Yang Li said that only about 20 people in her city could finish the whole leaf-vein embroidery process by themselves. “Young people like modern jobs with better pay,” she said sadly. She wanted to do something for this art.
To save this tradition, Yang Li works very hard to teach others. She opened a factory in 2011 and trained more than 500 women, even many from poor areas.

During the past winter vacation, my family spent our New Year holiday in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi. The city is famous for its porcelain (瓷) culture.
We visited a 16 that showed us how to make porcelain. On our way there, we noticed something special. All the streetlights were covered in porcelain. Even the rubbish bins were made of porcelain. We were 17 at all of these things. How wonderful!
At the museum, we learned about how to make porcelain. First, workers need to shape the porcelain clay into something, like pots. Then, the workers use a special paint called ceramic glaze (陶瓷釉) to 18 pictures on it. It takes them many hours to finish it. After that, the workers will put the pieces into a kiln (窑) and burn (煅烧) them at a very 19 temperature for 12 to 24 hours. 20 the workers take the pieces out after they cool down.
As the saying goes, 21 only comes through hard work. It’s easy to see that making porcelain is very difficult and costs much time. But the workers’ hard work made beautiful things.
On the last day of our trip, we went to Taoxichuan Art Avenue (大道). Many porcelain lovers were there making their 22 porcelain works. Tourists 23 the market and picked out works they liked. When we walked through the area, we not only chose gifts but also enjoyed ourselves.

Paper-cut, with a history of over 1,500 years, is a special kind of Chinese art. In Chinese culture, people think the tiger is brave and powerful. Let’s make a beautiful paper-cut tiger together!
What you need:* A pencil * A ruler * Scissors
* Brush and glue * A4 white paper * A4 background card
How to do:1. Draw a simple outline (轮廓) of a tiger body on paper to fill about half an A4 paper. Then cut it out.
2. Fold the body in half, then in half again. Cut some thin triangles across the folded edges (边缘). Keep the cuts to the middle area of the paper.
3. Carefully open out the paper and flatten (压平) the folds. Now you have the stripes (条纹) for the body. Next, make small stripes along the legs.
4. Cut out a 12cm*10cm rectangle from the left-over paper. Fold it in half, draw half a head then cut it out. Cut out a curled tail.
5. Keeping the head folded, draw an eye, nose and mouth. Cut them out. Make eyeholes and stripes by cutting across the folded edge.
6. Make small cuts along the tail and around the head. Brush glue over the back of the body, head and tail and stick onto the background card.

In 2022, she also started using the internet (网络) to show young people about leaf-vein embroidery. Her student Yang Xinyu helps her make short videos online.
However, there are still some difficulties. For example, the space on trains is a little small, and people get on and off at each station. Train workers need to work harder to integrate (融入) Chinese culture into train journeys.
