Guo Yingxiong is a 58-year-old artist from Jiangxi. For over 40 years, he has made beautiful storybooks from bamboo. This is called bamboo carving, an old Chinese art form. My Favorite Chinese Traditional Art
Among all the traditional Chinese art forms, my favorite is paper-cutting. Paper-cutting uses scissors or knives to cut patterns into paper. These patterns can be animals, flowers, or even stories, presenting a vivid and charming visual feast.
I first saw paper-cutting at a festival. The delicate designs and bright colors amazed me. Since then, I’ve learned to make simple ones. It’s really fun and helps me relax after study.
Paper-cutting shows Chinese people’s wisdom and creativity. It’s like a bridge connecting us to our rich culture and long history. I feel proud to learn and share this beautiful art, and hope more people can love it.

What’s your favorite traditional Chinese art form? Are you interested in bamboo carving (竹雕)?
Guo Yingxiong is a 58-year-old artist from Jiangxi. For over 40 years, he has made beautiful storybooks from bamboo. This is called bamboo carving, an old Chinese art form. When Guo was 12, his grandfather gave him his first knife. “I cut my fingers many times,” he says. He practiced every day, starting with easy things like leaves, then harder pictures.
Now, Guo’s carvings show old Chinese life. For example, one shows a market: people selling tea, children playing, and farmers with vegetables. The details are so vivid that you can almost hear the market noises.
Bamboo carving is very old in China. In the Ming Dynasty, people put these carvings in their rooms.
“Bamboo is strong. It bends (弯曲) easily but never breaks — like people should be,” Guo says. “These carvings help us remember our history and traditions.” Every morning, Guo picks bamboo in the forest. “Good bamboo grows slowly, like good art,” he tells students. He teaches young artists, “I made 100 bad carvings before a good one. Mistakes are okay.”
Thanks to artists like Guo, this wonderful art form is still full of life. His carvings don’t just show beautiful scenes (场景) — they protect China’s traditional culture and teach people important lessons.
As Chinese people, we also should protect and spread China’s traditional culture. In this way, more and more people know about our culture.

I first saw paper-cutting at a festival. The delicate designs and bright colors amazed me. Since then, I’ve learned to make simple ones. It’s really fun and helps me relax after study.
