Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 For people near a national park in Kenya, lions are a big problem. The park is very large, with mountains and rivers. So there are no fences in some parts of the park. Lions often go out of the park at night. They go to the farms and eat the cows. As a result, farmers have to kill the lions to protect their cows. In 1990, about 15,000 lions lived in Kenya, but now there are far fewer lions. A Kenyan boy named Richard Turere helped solve this problem and protect the lions… Developing ideas, Activity 3 A: Did you watch the programme about Richard Turere? B: He made the lion lights, right? I read a bit from the news. A: Yes, he did that at the age of 11. B: How did he do that? Tell me more. A: He tried many ways. He first used a scarecrow, but the lions soon knew it wasn’t a real person. Then he hid the cows, but the lions could still smell them. B: It wasn’t easy. A: He didn’t give up. One night, he walked around with a light. And guess what! The lions didn’t come near! B: They were scared of the moving light! A: Yes. Richard suddenly had the key to the problem. He put lights on the fences and made them go on and off. It worked! B: Wow, that’s cool! I really admire him! A: Me too. Now his invention is used widely. He is young, but he is good at thinking and creating. A:对。 A:我也是。 Developing ideas, Activity 4 Louis Braille became blind when he was a child, but he wanted to read and learn. At the age of 15, the creative teenager invented a way for blind people to read and write. He used little dots to show different letters. Blind people can feel the dots with their fingers. This invention helped blind people all over the world. It changed their lives. Unit 2 On the money. Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 Hello everyone! Then share photos or videos of your running on our website with your name. People can then see them online and donate money. All the money will go to the local old people’s home! Search for “Blue Lake Online Marathon” now! Come and join us. Let’s make a difference! Developing ideas, Activity 3 Andrew: Welcome to today’s programme. A group of teenagers wanted to raise money for the local old people’s home. So, they held an online marathon. I’m here with one of them. Hello, Jane. Jane: Hello, Andrew! Andrew: So, what gave you this idea? Jane: Well, we wanted to help out, but we had “money worries”. I mean, our pocket money was not enough. Then we thought about this new way of raising money. It’s easy for people to take part in, and many of us love running. Andrew: Did you set a goal? Jane: Yes, £20,000. But we did better! Thousands of people followed the marathon online and donated. We raised £51,000! Andrew: Wow, that’s a lot. Jane: Yes. That’s enough to fix the old buildings in the old people’s home. Andrew: You are making a huge difference! Unit 3 Past passing by. Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 Welcome to Easter Island. I’m Jenny, your guide. There are nearly 1,000 moai statues on the island. Today, we are going to see some of them. The largest moai statue is about 22 metres tall! On average, these statues are about four metres tall, and weigh around 14 tons, as heavy as eight cars! The big heads of the statues look special, with a large nose and long ears. But did you know the statues have got bodies, too? They’re under the ground! Why and how did people build the statues about 1,000 years ago? Let’s start our trip of discovery! Developing ideas, Activity 3 Jane: So how did people build these huge statues? Guide: It is said that they were made on the mountain. Then, the ancient people moved them to the coast. Paul: I can’t believe it! They are so big and heavy! Jane: I think it’s possible. There must be a way. Guide: Yes, there are many ideas. According to some scientists, the statues were moved on round wood. Paul: Yes, round wood works like a wheel! Jane: I’m not sure. There are no big trees on the island! Guide: Some local people say the statues “walked” to the coast. Paul: Walked? I don’t think that’s true! Jane: That’s impossible! Guide: Researchers found that the bottoms of the statues are not flat. This gave them an idea. They built such a statue and pulled it with ropes. Guess what? The statue moved down the hill step by step with the researchers! Paul: Oh, I get it! Ancient people were so clever! Jane: I don’t think so. That can’t be the truth. Guide: I’m not sure whether it’s the truth. But people will never stop exploring. Unit 4 Heroes. Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 Welcome to Film of the Week. Imagine this. You’re flying a plane. Suddenly, the plane’s front window breaks. The co-pilot is pulled partly outside. The wind is strong and the plane shakes heavily. Passengers may be shouting and crying. How would you feel? Well, these moments are from the film The Captain. In the film, the captain stayed calm. He flew the plane with one hand and held his co-pilot with the other. In the end, he landed the plane safely and everyone survived. This disaster film is based on a true story. It happened in Sichuan in 2018. The real captain, Liu Chuanjian, received the Touching China award. Have you seen it yet? I’m sure you will love it! Developing ideas, Activity 3 A: The film was fantastic! How could Captain Liu stay so calm? B: Well, he was once interviewed. And he said, “As the captain, my job is to keep the passengers and the plane safe… I didn’t think of my own life.” A: Well, responsibility is the most important thing for him. He reminds me of Captain Sully. B: Who’s Captain Sully? A: An American pilot. In 2009, his plane hit birds over New York City, and the engines stopped working. B: Oh, that sounds really scary. What happened next? A: He safely landed on a river. Everyone survived. B: Wow, that’s amazing! So, both he and Captain Liu stayed calm in the face of danger. A: Right! And in an interview, Captain Sully stated, “I was just doing my job… That’s what we’re trained to do.” B: True. Real heroes take responsibility in difficult situations. A:没错! Unit 5 A fine balance. Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 Today we’re going to talk about the rainforest, a part of nature that is important to us all. Rainforests are often called the “lungs of the earth”. That’s because they produce oxygen and help control the world’s climate. Rainforests cover only about 6% of land. However, they are home to more than half of the animals and plants on the earth. Rainforests are disappearing because of human activity. Farmers cut down trees to make more space for their animals. Also, factories cut down trees to make paper. In 2021 alone, about 37,500 square kilometres of rainforests were lost. That’s about ten football fields every minute! It’s a serious problem. Developing ideas, Activity 3 Welcome to today’s programme. We will tell you a useful way to deal with your old mobile phone. Logging in rainforests is usually against the law. However, it’s difficult to notice it. Topher White, a US engineer, has come up with a solution – he puts “ears” on trees. His invention uses an old mobile phone, a solar panel and a microphone. This is how it works: First, the invention is tied to trees. Next, an app on the mobile phone starts listening. When it catches the noise of cutting down trees, it sends an alarm to the forest guards. The guards can soon find the place and stop the logging. The invention has been used in 10 countries. It has saved over 2,500 square kilometres of rainforests. That’s about the size of 350,000 football fields. Unit 6 Live Green. Developing ideas, Activities 1 & 2 Hello, welcome to the Green Friends programme. Before we start today’s interview, I’ll first explain an idea, “upcycling”. Upcycling is a creative way of reusing old things. We can upcycle anything we no longer need. For example, old clothes, unwanted toys and old books. Just like the 3Rs, upcycling can also help the environment. We can use our creativity to give old things a second life. OK. Now let’s start our interview… Developing ideas, Activity 3 Host: Today we have Professor Lu, an upcycling expert. Welcome. Prof. Lu: Thank you. Host: Can you tell us the difference between upcycling and recycling? How are they different? Prof. Lu: That’s a good question! Recycling means breaking waste into materials to make new things. For example, if a glass is recycled, it’s broken, heated and turned into a new thing. Host: What about upcycling? Prof. Lu: Upcycling doesn’t break things. Instead, we think of new uses for them. For example, we can put a candle in a glass and make it a lantern. Host: Which do you think is better for the environment, professor? Prof. Lu: Well, I think upcycling is better. Recycling uses more energy than upcycling. What’s more, upcycling is easy. Also, it can save money. For example, we can turn an old shirt into a new dress or a bag instead of buying one. Host: Sounds great! I will try upcycling at home.
