Did you watch the most exciting women’s volleyball match at the 2016 Olympic Games? It was between China and Brazil.
Both teams were determined to enter the next round. From the moment the match started, it was clear that it was going to be a close match. The scores of the two teams went back and forth.
China lost the first set but won the next. In the third set, both teams were fighting tooth and nail, with every point feeling like a major battle. However, the Chinese team made some mistakes, and Brazil was catching up.
At the critical moment, Coach Lang Ping called for a timeout. She helped the players stay focused on their goals and gave them instructions to adjust the strategy. She tried to cheer them up. The
players also encouraged each other. Every player became more motivated and active. They worked harder and won the third and fifth sets. The audience was amazed at the big change and cheered for the team.
The Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team won the match, and the admiration of the world. Only when a team truly understands, trusts, and respects each other can it play at its best.

1. From the moment the match started, it was clear that it was going to be a close match.
(1)分析结构: the match started 为定语从句,修饰the moment。it was clear为“主—系—表”结构,其中主语it为形式主语,was 是系动词,clear 是表语。
Language points
(2)“It + be + ...
It be +形容词(important/necessary/useful...)+ that从句
It be +名词(a pity/a fact/a rule...)+ that 从句
It +被动语态(be + said/reported/believed...)+ that从句
It + be 动词+ ...
It + be 动词+ ...
It is necessary that we finish our English homework before class.
It is a pity that she can’t join in our English corner this Friday.
It is said that our school will hold an English speech contest
next month.
It is uncertain whether the English test will be put off.
It doesn’t matter when you submit your English composition.
(1)fight tooth and nail
同义短语为try one’s best /go all out。
例句:The two teams fought tooth and nail for the championship.
She fought tooth and nail to get the job.
2. In the third set, both teams were fighting tooth and nail, with every point feeling like a major battle.
feel like doing sth.(想要做某事)
例句:I feel like a fool for making that mistake.
I feel like drinking a cup of hot tea now.
instruction /ɪn'strʌkʃn/ n.
follow the instructions 遵守指示
under the instruction of sb.
3. She helped the players stay focused on their goals znd gave them instructions to adjust the strategy.
(3)instruct v.
instruct sb. to do sth.
instruct sb. on sth.
The coach gave instructions to the players before the match.
She learned to play the piano under the instruction of Mr. Wang.
Please read the instructions carefully before you use the new
machine.
Can you instruct me on how to use this new English learning app?
Only when you work hard can you get good grades.
Only Lily knows the answer to the question.
4. Only when a team truly understands, trusts, and respects each other can it play at its best.
(2)play at one’s best
反义短语:play at one’s worst(发挥最差水平)
例句:All the players played at their best in the final.
I didn’t play at my best because I was nervous.
