In a community in Changsha, Hunan, there is a special barbershop(理发店). The owner is 73-year-old Tang Jinlian, a woman from Yongzhou, Hunan.
The barbershop is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon, serving around 10 people every day. Tang only asks for three yuan for each haircut(理发).
Tang’s daughter became ill when she was three. Because of this, Tang and her daughter got a lot of help from others. To give back, Tang learned how to cut hair and hoped to serve the community.

In 2004, Tang’s son came to work in Changsha. Tang and her daughter followed him. At first, Tang set up a haircut stall(摊位) at a vegetable market. Later she moved the stall to Lufeng Community, Changsha. However, the space was too small, and few people visited. Finally, community workers stepped in to help her. In 2015, they turned a garage(车库) into a barbershop for Tang.
Tang said, “In the past, many people helped me. Now I want to help more people.” The words “A promise(承诺) made, a promise kept for life” on the barbershop’s wall may perfectly show what she wants to do.

My 16-year-old son, Dylan, told me that the greatest experience of his life was the trip to South Africa last summer. Most people would think that he was there on holiday, but Dylan spent nearly the whole ten days helping build houses for the local people. It was hard and dirty work. I never thought he would enjoy it, but he loved every minute.
Encouraging teenagers to do volunteer work is one of the most important things parents can do. Once they try it, teenagers often develop a love for volunteering. Research shows that students who volunteer tend to(往往) perform better in

school than those who don’t. Volunteering provides teenagers with many benefits(好处), including meaningful experiences, opportunities to meet new people, and basic life skills.
It’s not difficult to find volunteer opportunities for teenagers. They can help in places like hospitals, libraries, museums, and many other locations. Teenagers can also search for opportunities by asking local groups, or checking websites that connect volunteers with projects.
