I was brought up in an ordinary family. The great love of my life since I was a small girl was writing, which my family thought was surprising. Anyway, I trained to be a nurse, but whenever I had free time, I wrote, then the strangest thing happened. I had been nursing a very old woman for several months in a hospital. SHE told me that although he had many relatives, no one came to visit her. He said he would leave me a lot of money when he died. I thought that he was joking, but SHE wasn't. After he died, I became rich. I was determined not to waste money. I wanted to do something for my family, but they said IT was my money, and they knew I would use IT properly. Then I went to amErica and did a degree in creative writing. I learned a great deal from the lectures and other writers on the course. Now I want to do something to help other Young writers. I am thinking of setting up a publishing firm named after the old lady who helped me achieve my life ambition. I was brought up in an ordinary family. When US teenager Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.
It seems obvious that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory — repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — has also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a small baby and finally his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation (动力).
“If I was going to sit on the couch all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided right then and there that I wasn’t going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈),” he said.
It was with that state of mind that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’ eyes to their true potential (潜力) in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.
Jake’s father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. “Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback , there’s a setup (安排),” Jake said. “In every one of us, there’s more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”
24. We can learn from the article that Jake Olson ________.
A. was born a blind child B. gave up on himself for a while
C. has great muscle memory D. is trying to find the cure for his disease
25. According to the article, Jake’s family members ________.
A. pity him deeply B. once lost trust in him
C. encouraged him to write the book D. admire his efforts and determination
26. The book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life, is to ________.
A. introduce good ways to get along with disabled people
B. inspire people to discover and use their hidden abilities
C. help people come up with better life goals
D. explain different meanings of “a happier life”
27. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph?
A. Fight. B. Failure. C. Opportunity. D. Success.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. B
根据文章第三段“It seems obvious that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory — repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — has also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.(很明显,作为一个有视力和肌肉记忆的人,他早期的运动经历——一遍又一遍地重复动作,直到它们成为第二天性——也使杰克打得很好)”可知,他的肌肉记忆力帮他在失明后继续打球,即Jake Olson有很强的肌肉记忆力,故选C。

【26题详解】

In a single in-breath, human sense of smell can recognize the difference between odors (气味) quickly. Its level of sensitivity is equal to color vision, according to a new study. This doesn’t agree with the widely held belief that olfaction (嗅觉) is slow.
The researchers, from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ohio State University, developed a device that included two main parts. One allows odors to flow in one direction and the other is capable of delivering odors to human nose with an accuracy of 18 milliseconds. The researchers asked 229 adults in China to wear this device and smell different odor mixtures. Two odors are presented one after another within a single in-breath.
They found that participants could identify different odor orders when the two odors were only 60 milliseconds apart, which challenged the timing of the previous research, around 1,200 milliseconds. They noted that they used only four odors and that it would be beneficial to test a wider variety to determine whether the human olfaction is more sensitive to certain odor or mixture.
“This study sheds important light on the puzzling system that support human odor recognition,” Dr. Robert Datta wrote, a professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. The study of human olfaction has historically fallen behind that of vision and hearing, because as humans, we think of ourselves as visual creatures that largely use speech to communicate. It helps fill a key gap in our understanding of how we as humans smell.
32. How did the researchers carry out their study?
A. By presenting examples. B. By analyzing the data.

D. Success.

Many of us have read “The Art Of War” (《孙子兵法》), but how many of us have truly understood it? What does the most influential and important military text have to teach us? How can a 2,500-year-old Chinese strategist be so important even now?
The author Sun Tzu’s whole existence is in mystery. Where did he live? Where was he born? How did he become so successful? How did he die? No one truly knows the answer to these questions.
According to researchers, Sun Tzu supposedly wrote the texts during the Warring States period (475-221 BCE). This was the time when China was divided into seven states that started war against each other for supremacy (霸权).
The famous military text has now turned into a guide for all manner of conflict, and it is recommended by all the famous business gurus (权威) and even sports coaches. Whenever there is a battle within ourselves, or internal/ external conflict in an organization, The Art Of War provides the necessary guidelines for victory. Even if the conflict is with one’s competition or nature, it gives definitive advice on how to approach that conflict and emerge victorious.
One of the first lessons that we learn from The Art Of War is to assess your enemy and yourself. Knowing yourself is important but it is also equally important to know your enemy. Understand your strengths but also recognize your weaknesses and vulnerabilities. This can help you develop strategies to protect the weakest parts of yourself.
28. What is the main mystery about Sun Tzu according to the text?
A. His military strategies. B. His real name. C. His personal life details. D. His victories.
29. According to the text, which fields now can The Art Of War be used in?
A. All fields involving conflict. B. Business and sports mainly.
C. Military and history only. D. Education and self-improvement.
30. According to the last paragraph, what is one of the first lessons from The Art Of War?
A. He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
B. To focus only on your own strengths.
C. To avoid any weaknesses.
D. Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the life of Sun Tzu.
B. To explain the importance and influence of The Art Of War.
C. To list the lessons we can learn from The Art Of War.
D. To compare The Art Of War in different fields.
D
C. By conducting an experiment. D. By interviewing participants.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Participants recognized odors in a shorter time than previously thought.
B. The result of the previous research was not as accurate as the new finding.
C. There was limitation on the range of the odors in the previous research.
D. More odors or mixture might be employed in the test of the further study.
34. What’s Dr. Rober Datta’s attitude toward the new finding?
A. Supportive B. Negative C. Objective D. Disappointed
35. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To stress the significance of the new study.
B. To show the future focus of the research team.
C. To predict the possibilities of the further study.
D. To explain the reasons for the gap of the study.
