Trying to find the perfect present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion and most of the time your loved ones will insist that they don’t need or want anything! So, what to do? Here are some tips that could help.
Start Early
Starting your shopping early can have many advantages. For instance, it gives you enough time to come up with ideas for what you should buy your friends or family members. Moreover, the closer it gets to holidays, the higher the prices go up. So, save your money by being an early bird.
Make a List
Here, you can write down everything your friends or family members love. This can include food, hobbies, experiences, and more. Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that perfectly suits them. If you are lucky, you should be able to find good ideas in one of these lists.
Think outside the Box
Often, the reason why you get stuck for gift ideas is that you only focus on the same kind of presents. If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. You can find something your friends or family members can use every day. When in doubt, you can simply put smaller presents together to make up a larger, more meaningful gift.
Gift an Experience
In case you are still feeling a little stuck, go ahead and find something that the two of you can do together. It may be a class, or anything else where you can enjoy each other’s company. In short, you will be able to give them the gift of friendship.
1. Start your shopping early can help you _______.
A. buy gifts in lower prices
B. change ideas very often
C. read your friend’s mind easily
D. make a list of preferred gifts
2. To enjoy each other’s company, you can _______.
A. talk to your family members
B. find something that you can do together
C. write down everything your friends love
D. put smaller gifts together to make up a larger one
3. What is the purpose of the passage?

At just 19 years old, Akiša Peters teaches at the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribal College. He specializes in a language that is thousands of years old, the Dakota language, spoken by the Dakota people.
“The Dakota language is the most important aspect of Dakota culture. Without it, our Dakota culture would no longer exist.” Peters claimed. “I was lucky to grow up around many first-language Dakota speakers. But now the elderly continually passed away and at the end of their lives, they just wanted to know their families would continue to have the language. One of the problems our people have is finding ways to get at-length and ongoing exposure (接触) to the language.”
Aside from instructing at the college level, Peters uses social media to share videos that combine humor, culture, and basic-level conversation to help teach Dakota. In his free time, he visits Dakota elders. He also started an online group of youth to converse and share the knowledge of the language in a safe and supportive space.
Akiša Peters wants to tell the youth that if they want to learn their own language, sit with their elders and learn from them. Endless vocabulary sheets could discourage them from learning. Standards created by non-speakers could also do that. “Within the next decade, I believe my colleagues, other Dakota-learning relatives and I will have children and start a new generation of Dakota. I also hope my brothers and sisters will take the path we laid out for them and continue to learn and speak Dakota. On my reservation there are numerous young people working on the comeback of the language. I’m hopeful because I’m definitely not alone.” Akiša Peters told Teenvogue.
4. Why does Akiša Peters teach the Dakota language?
A. To enrich his experience. B. To record its written form.
C. To prevent it dying out. D. To make it known globally.
5. What can we say about Akiša Peters according to Paragraph 3?
A. Learned. B. Creative. C. Humorous. D. Cooperative.
6. What does Akiša Peters expect the young people to do?

Minnesota, mid-winter. A snowstorm blows through the city, leaving 500,000 homes without power, drivers stuck on highways and flights put off. Meanwhile, forty feet up an electric pole (电线杆), a technician is trying to get the lights back on, but not knowing where to check the fix or how to call for support from the rescue centre.
When disaster hits, frontline workers must mobilize. But, too often, they are going to work armed with last century’s tools. Rescue efforts are running on clipboards (记事板) and piles of paper. And there’s a price: longer power failure, and water supply shut off for longer. This is one of cases calling for Industrial AI. It is AI that is trained to fix specific problems in dangerous situations where, sometimes, life is on the line. And, AI has the power to change how we respond (回应) to disasters.
Before a disaster hits, planners, with the help of an Industrial AI, predict where a heavy storm might move next — and maps a live view of what is at risk. Rescue workers are timely sent to the exact sites as the facts change. And, once technicians are on the job, they will know what’s gone wrong on an image or video and they will finish the fix quickly through AI guidance.
“If we can cut recovery time by getting rescue workers to the right places with the right tools, before the event even hits, then hospitals stay powered, field teams work safely and families return to warm homes faster,” said Brian Burdette, head of the rescue team.
These are AI technologies that are already being tested. But, if we’re to see a real influence, we need to enter into a spirit of openness and cooperation (合作). We need nations and companies to pull together at a system-wide level, not just organization by organization or area by area, catching the chance that industrial AI presents for intelligent responses. For technicians risking their life in a disaster, we owe them that much.
8. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us about the disaster?
A. Its cause. B. Its type. C. Its influence. D. Its location.
9. What does the underlined “life is on the line” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Time is running out. B. AI is worth its value.
C. People are waiting in line. D. People are risking their lives.
10. What is Brian Burdette’s attitude towards Industrial AI rescue work?
A. Supportive B. Doubtful C. Uncertain D. Objective
11. What does the author suggest about the rescue work in the last paragraph?
A. Cutting recovery time B. Encouraging cooperation.
C. Training skilled technicians. D. Using advanced technology.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

A snowstorm blows through the city, leaving 500,000 homes without power, drivers stuck on highways and flights put off. Meanwhile, forty feet up an electric pole (电线杆), a technician is trying to get the lights back on, but not knowing where to check the fix or how to call for support from the rescue centre.(明尼苏达州,隆冬时节。一场暴风雪席卷了这座城市,致使50万户家庭断电,司机被困在高速公路上,航班也被迫延误。与此同时,在一根40英尺高的电线杆上,一名技术人员正试图恢复供电,但他不知道该从何处查找解决办法,也不知道如何向救援中心请求支援)”可知,第一段主要向我们讲述了这场灾难的规模。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“When disaster hits, frontline workers must mobilize. But, too often, they are going to work armed with last century’s tools. Rescue efforts are running on clipboards (记事板) and piles of paper.(当灾难来袭时,一线救援人员必须迅速行动。但他们往往还在使用上个世纪的工具开展工作。救援工作仍依赖记事板和成堆的纸质文件)”可知,救援人员的设备陈旧,所以人们在冒着生命危险工作。故划线词意思是“生命处于危险中”。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““If we can cut recovery time by getting rescue workers to the right places with the right tools, before the event even hits, then hospitals stay powered, field teams work safely and families return to warm homes faster,” said Brian Burdette, head of the rescue team.( 救援队负责人布莱恩·伯德特说:“如果我们能在事件发生之前,就让救援人员携带合适的工具抵达现场,从而缩短救援时间,那么医院就能保持正常运转,救援队伍就能安全作业,受灾家庭也能更快地回到温暖的家中。”)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“We need nations and companies to pull together at a system-wide level, not just organization by organization or area by area, catching the chance that industrial AI presents for intelligent responses.(我们需要各个国家和企业从整个系统层面携手合作,而不能只是按组织单位或地区分别行动,要抓住工业人工智能所带来的做出智能反应的机遇)”可知,作者建议救援工作鼓励合作。故选B。

Research on the effects of age on language learning often leads to conclusion that it’s impossible to learn a language after the age of 18, yet there’s no scientific proof for this saying. While certain language processing works best during childhood, others may even experience a new growth between the ages of 50 and 75.
The definition of language learning and its goals also play an important role. If the aim is to talk easily in daily social situations, research suggests that fluency in a new language can be achieved at any age with enough study.
Learning a language at different stages of life comes with advantages and disadvantages. If you start before 10, you may be able to get a native - like accent. But if you start teaching a second language to a child late in their speaking development, there maybe challenges.
Between the ages of 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language’s rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes.
When you study another language in adulthood, you may do more translation and think in your native language first. You may also feel nervous and be slow to speak. But adults have good advantages too. They have great communication skills, know more about literature, and understand society and culture better.
Learning a new language at the age of 50 and above may be easier because some of their mental skills keep getting better until they are in their mid-to-late 70s. This age group can quickly learn the basics of a language, although more research is needed to be sure.
In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. Even if you make some mistakes, reaching an intermediate level in a language can be good. Starting early can improve your pronunciation and grammar. But using the language all your life is very important if you want to speak it well. Ultimately, it’s never too late to start or relearn a language.
12. In which situation can one achieve fluency in a new language at any age?
A. In grammar class. B. In writing practice.
C. In vocabulary research. D. In everyday communication.
13. Which of the following can we learn about language learning?
A. Early learning delays children’s language development.
B. Learning during teenage years helps build up confidence.
C. Learners beyond fifty can get knowledge quickly.
D. Learning in adulthood helps to study translation skills.
14. Which of the statements might agree with the conclusion mentioned about language learning?
A. Starting early may cause challenges.
B. There is no age limit for successful language learning.
C. Only born learners can achieve fluency in a new language.
D. Mistakes in language learning are unacceptable for progress.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Why Language Learning Has Age Limits.
B. Why Age Plays a Vital Role in Language Learning.
C. How Language Learning Limits us in Different Ages.
D. How Language Learning Changes Depending on Your Age.
D 13. B 14. B 15. D
根据第二段“The definition of language learning and its goals also play an important role. If the aim is to talk easily in daily social situations, research suggests that fluency in a new language can be achieved at any age with enough study. (语言学习的定义和目标也起着重要的作用。如果目标是在日常社交场合轻松交谈,研究表明,只要学习足够,任何年龄的人都可以流利地说一门新语言。)”可知,在日常交流的场合中,一个人在任何年龄都能流利地掌握一门新语言。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Between the ages of 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language’s rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes. (在10到18岁之间,有一个特殊的机会来理解语法和发展对一门新语言规则的理解。在这段时间学习语言也可以让你更自信,并鼓励你对语言变化持积极的态度。)”可知,在青少年时期学习语言有助于建立自信。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. (总之,随着年龄的增长,有些事情可能会变得越来越难,但语言学习没有年龄限制。)”可知,成功的语言学习没有年龄限制。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段的句子“In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. 【36题详解】
考查冠词。句意:他向全球学习者教授藏语,将自己的热爱化作了一座文化桥梁。表示“一座文化桥梁”,为泛指,空后cultural起始音为辅音,用不定冠词a修饰可数名词bridge。故填a。
根据“Nie had little chance to learn Tibetan at school”以及“he took an introductory course in college”可知,聂昌在大学前几乎没机会学藏语,直到大学才接触藏语入门课程,表示“直到…才”用until引导时间状语从句。故填until。
【38题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:大多数由母语人士制作的课程并不太适合外来学习者。句中已有谓语didn’t suit,make作非谓语动词,名词Most courses与make之间是逻辑上的被动关系,用过去分词作后置定语,表示“由母语者制作的课程”。故填made。

此处为固定句型it’s adj. to do sth.,it为形式主语,不定式短语作真正主语。故填to see。

Dear Peter,
I’m so glad you sent me your practice video. It’s wonderful to see your enthusiasm for the Chinese poetry recitation competition.
Watching it, I noticed a couple of things. As for pronunciation, you had some difficulties with the tones. Chinese is a tonal language, and mispronouncing the tones can change the meaning. For example, in that line you recited, the tone of “ma” was wrong, making it sound odd. Also, your pacing was a bit off. You rushed through some phrases as if you were in a hurry to finish, losing the natural rhythm of the poem. Here’s how you can improve. For the tones, practice with a Chinese tone chart, repeating each syllable with the correct tone until it becomes natural. For pacing, read the poem aloud slowly at first, focusing on the punctuation and the flow of the words. As you get more comfortable, gradually increase the speed. Listen to professional Chinese poetry recitations to get a feel for how it should be done.
I’m sure you’ll do great with a bit more practice. Good luck!
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua

I have always been passionate about English speeches, but I was born a shy girl who was afraid of standing in front of a crowd. When I entered Senior One, our school held an English speech competition, which I dreamed of taking part in for a long time. However, the fear of being laughed at always stopped me from signing up. I was worried that I would forget my words or make silly mistakes in pronunciation during the speech.
My English teacher Ms. Liu found my desire and my fear. She is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who always encourages us to challenge ourselves. One day, she talked to me softly and said that courage was not the absence of fear, but the decision to move forward despite fear. She told me that every chance to try was a step to grow, even if I failed.
Her words touched my heart deeply, and I finally made up my mind to sign up for the competition. I spent all my spare time practicing my speech. I read it aloud again and again to correct my pronunciation, and I asked Ms. Liu to help me polish the speech and correct my grammar mistakes. She guided me patiently and taught me some skills of public speaking, like how to make eye contact with the audience and control my speed.
As the competition drew near, my nervousness grew day by day. I practiced my speech hundreds of times, yet I still felt anxious, afraid that I would let myself and Ms. Liu down. I even thought about giving up when I stumbled over some sentences during the last practice before the competition.
On the eve of the competition, Ms. Liu sent me a short message, which said, “Believe in yourself, and your efforts will never be in vain. Be brave, and you will shine.” Staring at the warm words, I took a deep breath and told myself that I should fight for my dream bravely, no matter what the result would be.

Paragraph 1: The day of the English speech competition finally arrived. Walking into the hall with my heart beating fast, I saw many students waiting nervously for their turn. When my name was called, I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage calmly. I looked at the audience and saw Ms. Liu sitting in the front row, smiling and nodding at me to encourage me. With her warm gaze, I began my speech smoothly, trying my best to express every word clearly and confidently. I focused on my speech and forgot all my nervousness gradually.
Paragraph 2: When I finished my speech, a wave of warm applause swept over the hall. I bowed politely and walked off the stage with a big smile. In the end, I won the second prize, which made me extremely excited and proud. Ms. Liu congratulated me sincerely and said that my courage and hard work deserved the reward. This unforgettable experience taught me that we should never let fear hold us back from chasing our dreams. As long as we believe in ourselves and keep trying bravely, we will surely make our dreams come true and grow into a better self.

3. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To suggest ways on how to make friends.
B. To give advice on reading minds.
C. To share a travel story.
D. To offer tips on buying presents.

A. Deal with vocabulary sheets. B. Keep to the given standards.
C. Communicate with their elders. D. Learn from their teachers.
7. Which section of a website is the text probably taken from?
A. Research. B. Business. C. Fashion. D. Culture.

D
