Does your hometown have a train system? How does it benefit local lives?
1a
Yes, my hometown Wuhan has a very strong railway system, especially high-speed railways.
It used to take a night to go from Wuhan to Beijing, then 7 hours, now just over 3 hours.
It also makes nearby trips easier. Many cities around Wuhan can be reached within 2 hours, so people can visit other cities on weekends.

Read again and answer the questions.
1. What type of writing is the text?
It’s a news report or a magazine article.
Reasons:
It focuses on real events and their influence on people’s lives.
It uses data to show changes.
It uses quotes from different people to make the story real.
It follows a very clear structure to present the true event.
It starts with the slow old railway and bad transport links.
Then it talks about how the new fast railway cuts travel time and improves people’s lives.
At last, it shows that the railway has put Kenya on the fast track of development.
2. What was the problem with the old railway?
It was very slow. It took 10 hours to get to Nairobi from Mombasa.
3. How have local Kenyans benefited from the new railway?
Travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi has been cut to about four hours.
People who live near the railway have become richer.
Businessmen can get to places on time and make business deals with ease.
Food transport is easier, so people now have more fresh food to eat.
4. Why is it important to make food transport easier?
Because faster transport means food can stay fresh longer. Farmers can sell their fresh produce to more cities, which helps them earn more money. People can also get fresher and cheaper food, improving their quality of life.
5. What does “on the fast track”mean?
It has two meanings:
The train travels fast on the new railway.

China and Kenya work together to build a better world.

Discuss the questions.
1. Have you seen or heard of any similar changes in the
world over the last several years? Where was it and what
happened?
Yes, I have. One great change is the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, China.
Before the bridge was built, people living on both sides of the canyon had to travel along narrow, winding mountain roads.
The roads were steep, full of sharp bends, and very dangerous, especially on rainy or snowy days.
It used to take over 2 hours even to go to the next village, not to mention traveling to places farther away.
Now, with the world’s highest bridge, the same trip only takes about 2 minutes.
This huge change has made life much easier for local people. Farmers can send their products to other cities quickly, and more tourists come to visit the beautiful canyon.
Just like the new railway in Kenya, it has put this mountain area on the fast track of development.
2. In what other ways can China work together with other
countries to build a better world?
Build high-speed railways(e.g. the China-Europe Railway Express) to connect countries and make travel and trade faster.
Share high-speed rail technology, clean energy and power projects with other countries to help them develop.
Teach farming skills to African countries to grow more food and fight hunger.
Send the Peace Ark hospital ship to give free medical help to people in need around the world.
