This place looks like a desert. Only one tree stands alone on the dry, open land.
This place is green and lively. There are many plants, bushes, and a winding river flowing through it.
How has this place changed over time?

This place is Saihanba(塞罕坝)in Chengde, Hebei, China.
Saihanba used to be a dry and barren place with only one tree. The land gradually turned into a desert. To improve the environment, people planted about 480 million trees (4.8亿棵树)there.
After more than 60 years of hard work, it has become a green forest, a beautiful natural reserve and a popular scenic spot.
It is a wonder that people turned the desert into a forest.
The famous lone tree still stands there, giving people hope.
Do you know this place?
It is called Zhenbeitai, (镇北台)in Yulin, Shaanxi.
It was built during the Ming Dynasty and was a famous watchtower on the Great Wall.
It is known as the “First Tower of the Great Wall”.

It’s amazing to see how much the environment has changed through hard work. The process must have been very tough.
The photos show changes in Li Rui's hometown over the years. What are they? How do they make you feel?
After years of hard work, the area has been completely changed into a green oasis. Today, it stands as a great example of successful environmental protection.
This is a photo of Zhenbeitai which was taken in 1984.
Back then, it lay on the edge of the Mu Us Desert(毛乌素沙漠), surrounded by yellow sand and almost no green plants, and moving sand even nearly buried the ancient city walls.

George: Hi, Li Rui. Guess what? My father, Bob, and I are
going to visit your hometown. Could you be our guide?
Li Rui: Sure! I'd love to!
George: Wonderful! You know, my father's last visit was about
20 years ago. He became a good friend of your
grandfather.
Li Rui: Grandpa will be so happy. They haven't seen each other
for ages!
George: Yes, and my father really wants to see how the place
has changed since he last visited.

Bob: Amazing! When I first visited here, it took half a day to
reach the town. Now, with the new roads, it takes only

George: Life is much easier!
Li Rui: Not only that. We used to have to travel far to see a
doctor, but now our town has built a new hospital.
Bob: Great! And didn't I see a supermarket down the street?
Li Rui: Yes. We didn't have any good places for shopping until
10 years ago.
Bob: But the biggest change is on the hills. They used to be
covered with sand.
Li Rui: And now they have been covered with beautiful trees!
