Benefits of sport
Whether you simply go for a long walk in the park, ride your bicycle through the countryside or go to the gym, getting your body moving will not only make you feel more energized, but will also improve your overall health.
Involving yourself in an activity that makes you breathe a little more heavily will improve the development of your heart and lungs and help them work more effectively and efficiently. Additionally, regular exercise will tone your body by contributing to the development of your muscles, bones and joints and will also help you maintain a healthy body weight. Another benefit of exercise is that it will improve your body's immune system, making you better prepared to fight off infection.
Every sport has its own specific health benefits. Swimming, for example, is an excellent physical activity as nearly all muscles are used when you swim. As a result, it provides a terrific full-body workout, improving coordination, flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Of course, swimming is also a great way to cool down on a hot day!
Sport, as well as being a physical activity, has a mental aspect too. It can help define who you are and who you can become. Sport builds character and promotes the development of a number of qualities that are essential for a successful and fulfilling life. Included here are three qualities worthy of special consideration. Firstly, sport requires self-discipline, without which there will always be the temptation to simply give up. In order to excel in sport, you will have to set goals, make plans and persevere with thoughts and actions, even without immediate rewards. Secondly, sport will encourage you to maintain a positive and balanced outlook.

Signing your kids up for soccer in the fall and lacrosse in the spring may do more for them than build social skills or turn them into athletes.A study by researchers at Michigan State University shows that playing sports can also lead to improved academic performance, particularly for college students.
The study found that playing sports in college improved the grade point averages (GPA) of students and increased the likelihood for them to return for another term.
The researchers did research on almost 1,800 freshmen at MSU.The students who played sports averaged a 3.25 GPA at the end of their first year, compared to a 3.07 GPA for freshmen who didn't play sports.
The findings also showed that playing sports was linked to lower odds of students dropping or failing classes their first year.In fact, those who played sports were 40% more likely to return for their sophomore year, and 2.5 times more likely to come back to the university overall.
“At the end of the year, students who played sports dropped or failed a total average of six credits compared to 7.7 credits among non-playing students,” says lead author Kerri Vasold in a university release. The nearly-two credit difference per year for those who play sports has a large effect on the time it takes to graduate.
As for the ideal number of sports and extra-curricular activities that seemed to be most beneficial, researchers say the “sweet spot” ranges from four to seven activities over a school year.
“Don't go crazy.Don't join 20 teams,” says co-author Jim Pivarnik.“Grab some friends, find a moderate number of activities and get involved in something different. The four-to-seven range seems to be effective and is linked to a higher GPA.”
Adds Vasold: “There are so many different ways to participate. And the best part is you don't have to be an all-star basketball player. You can still join a team. It's an inclusive environment and helps students do better and creates a new home.”

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
(2026·湖北名校联考)
Take a Thought Walk
Have you ever considered when you get your best ideas? Or what you're doing when the solution to a problem pops into your head? 8 But it could also be doing something unrelated, like taking a shower or washing the dishes. The best ideas can land when you least expect them — but there are things you can do to help them along, and that's where walking comes in.Even a quick walk can reduce stress, clarify thinking or give your creativity a boost. Here's why you should put your best foot forward.
9 Michelle, a 21-year-old university student, discovered walking as a teen when she was going through a tough period of stress.“My mum loves walking, so it was her who first suggested I go out for a walk,” she remembers.“Within about 10 minutes it made me feel so much better.”
The benefit of walking goes beyond calming — it opens mental capacity.Gillian Mills, a high school teacher with 20 years of classroom experience, explains, “When students feel too stressed to think straight, we often suggest a walk outside. 10 Just picture stress like a balloon blowing up.It fills with air and pressure builds.Walking and taking big breaths of fresh air are like gently letting the pressure out ...”
11 It holds partial focus, letting you notice your surroundings while your mind wanders in new directions.Whether you're revising for an exam, feeling stuck on a school project or working through a friendship problem, going for a walk could help.
Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking. 12 This suggests that it increases what the experts call “divergent thinking” — the process where the mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.
A.It helps clear your head for new thoughts.
B.Many experts believe walking improves mental health.
C.Some people find their best ideas come when relaxing quietly.
D.Critically, walking occupies just enough attention, but not all.
E.Evidence for walking's calming power comes from lived experience.
F.It might be sitting at your desk in school or working at a computer.
G.Participants in a study increased their brainstorming by 60% during/after walks.
