Often, there is a false idea that one must be “in-the-know” to truly appreciate artworks. However, fine art opens the door to everyone. Learning how to look at and understand artworks requires us to take the time to view, identify and think.
Look at the Art
As the first step, it’s necessary to take a moment to recognize the artwork’s general characteristics:
● Is it a painting, sculpture or craftwork?
● Does it appear disordered or organized?
● Are the colors bright or soft?
Identify the Art and Artist
Knowing when or how the artwork was made and learning something about the artist can reveal more context. We all know the famous painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by Picasso in 1937. However, if we can find out Picasso composed the painting to reflect a bombing during the Spanish Civil War, we know more about its anti-war meaning.
Even if the historical context of an artwork is not obvious, knowing the year of its creation offers more context.
Think About the Meaning
Use what you observed in the first two steps to think about meanings the artwork could have.
Consider what the title, the subjects, or the symbols meant to the artist when he or she created the artwork. What do the colors say about the artist, and how do they apply to the subjects in the art? For example, the owls in Lebo’s works stand for wisdom, but why are they so brightly colored?
In addition, ask about the feelings it gives you. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art, but also encourage viewers to come up with their own explanations. Still, every explanation is not automatically correct, which is why the techniques described above are helpful in finding clues.
The next time you’re admiring a work of art, keep these techniques in mind, and its meaning may unfold before your eyes.
21.What is the first step when viewing art?
A.Doing some research on the artist.
B.Being “in-the-know” about the work.
C.Identifying the work’s general features.
D.Knowing the year of an artwork’s creation.
22.When thinking about the meaning of an artwork, you should .
A.explain it freely B.choose a title for it
C.describe it to the viewers D.ask how it makes you feel
23.Who is the passage intended for?
A.Museum staff. B.Gallery visitors.
C.Professional artists. D.Exhibition organizers.
B
When students, or professionals, sit down across from me for life or professional coaching, they rarely begin with a crisis. More often they describe futures that sound impressive: consulting, leadership roles at major companies. Their plans are polished. From the outside, everything looks ready to go.
Then I ask a different question: “What would your ordinary Tuesday look like at this job?” I want them to tell me what time they’ll wake up or what their evenings feel like when they come home tired. At this point in the conversation, in most cases, students, and sometimes even professionals, can’t answer my questions. The conversation turns into silence. They have thought about what role they want, but they haven’t yet thought about how it fits with the activities they like to do and the people they care about.
I know that silence because I once sat in their chair. Early in my career, I was chasing a promotion I thought I wanted. One day, a senior colleague asked me to stay late and help her revise a report. I said yes, as always. At 9 p.m., alone in the office, I looked at my cold takeout and found this was my third late night that week. I had no energy to call my family, no memory of what I’d eaten for lunch. That night. I forced myself to picture the promotion I was chasing: the same late nights, just a fancier title.
That was when I realized: like many ambitious young people, I had been treating work as sacrifice. But endurance (忍耐) only matters if we know what we’re enduring for. The former belief that lasting fulfillment waits at the finish line is what psychologists call the “arrival fallacy.” The problem is, goals rarely transform daily life as we expect. New pressures replace old ones. The future we imagined becomes just the new normal.
Meanwhile, the real question remains unanswered. Do I actually like how I spend my days? That’s why I push my conversation partners toward the details - painting as complete a picture as they can. I am not to discourage ambition, but it needs a reality check. Our everyday isn’t a means to a few milestones. Life is enjoyed through the ordinary Tuesdays we spend living it.
24.Why do people fail to describe an “ordinary Tuesday”?
A.They lack confidence in their career.
B.They avoid thinking about the future.
C.They have little interest in job planning.
D.They are unaware of what the job involves.
25.What was the author’s early career life like?
A.Planned and promising. B.Satisfying but routine.
C.Goal-driven but exhausting. D.Stressful but rewarding.
26.People with “arrival fallacy” believe __________.
A.future goals are beyond reach
B.new pressures will soon appear
C.endurance guarantees promotion
D.happiness comes after goal completion
27.How does the author view ambition?
A.It should be grounded in life.
B.It leads to high self-expectation.
C.It fuels people’s craze for milestones.
D.It should be replaced by practical goals.
C
At any bus stop or while waiting in line, most people will have their heads down scrolling (滚屏) on their phones. But studies suggest if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, there could be some serious benefits.
We actually spend nearly half our waking time daydreaming, but it isn’t always pleasant. A study found people even preferred electric shocks to being alone with their thoughts. This explains why we automatically reach for phones during downtime
Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares mindless scrolling to “brain candy” — momentarily pleasurable but lacking in meaning. She adds human achievements largely come from higher-order thinking.
So next time you have a few minutes free, put away your phone and let your mind wander. Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often overblown. In a 2022 study, people predicted they would hate 20 minutes alone doing nothing, yet afterward reported greater enjoyment than expected. According to researcher Kou Murayama, the ability to mentally wander — to reflect on past experiences, and consider others’ viewpoints — is a distinctly human capacity that boosts learning and helps understand others.
Mind-wandering is also key to problem-solving. People often find solutions better after unfocused thinking than intentional effort alone, especially during routine tasks like driving or showering. Even when people are not actively thinking, their brains remain active in a so-called default mode (默认模式), allowing ideas to connect in new ways. It’s especially helpful for complex problems.
Beyond cognitive (认知的) benefits, daydreaming also boosts social and emotional connections. A study found imagining pleasant interactions with loved ones made people feel closer. Social daydreaming allows individuals to practice conversations, reflect on past interactions, and prepare for future social situations. As psychologist Poerio says, our ability to mentally “time travel” helps us better handle the social world.
Murayama says he now tries to resist checking his phone during short waits and let his thoughts wander. He finds simply entertaining oneself mentally can be both satisfying and meaningful.
28.Why does Erin Westgate compare mindless scrolling to “brain candy”?
A.It does harm to people’s health.
B.It helps people to avoid boredom.
C.It replaces deep thinking in daily life.
D.It brings quick but shallow enjoyment.
29.What is the 2022 study used to demonstrate?
A.Phone addiction is avoidable.
B.Daydreaming is undervalued.
C.Being alone promotes learning.
D.Self-reflection defines humans.
30.What does the default mode suggest?
A.Unfocused thinking fuels creativity.
B.Intentional effort brings new ideas.
C.Complex tasks require active minds.
D.Routines involve little brain activity.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Maintain Focus in the Digital Age
B.Discover the Joy of Being Truly Alone
C.Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind
D.Explore Secret Benefits of Social Daydreaming
D
We want to be happy and satisfied forever and we want to be able to live our lives without worries. This search for harmony, inner peace, and self-realization is practically the same in all the different methods of representing human needs.
From our experience, we know that wherever we are or whatever we do certain rules exist. On the roads there are traffic rules, in football there are the rules of the game, and in nature there are the natural laws. For those who respect these rules, the corresponding (相应的) activities or deeds are easier to accomplish.
We have got to know the most important rule on the earth which all the earth’s inhabitants must follow. This rule says: Every being has an equal right to live here, to develop here and to carry out his tasks here. Because of its importance for everything on the earth, we call this rule the basic rights of existence. Based on several examples and comparisons from our everyday life, we have seen that harmony and peace can only come into our lives if we respect this foundation of existence.
The more single-mindedly a person follows this rule in all his decision-making, the closer he gets to his goal of inner peace and harmony. From this point of view, our life is nothing other than a training camp for the acquisition of the missing characteristics and abilities which we require for continuously respecting the basic rights of existence.
Our subconscious (潜意识) helps us with subjective perception: the activation (激活) of our goals, and additional mechanisms permit us to interpret things so that we can efficiently train for the goals mentioned previously. We develop our awareness and accept the full responsibility for our life. This is our personal path to harmony and inner peace.
For most human beings, respecting the basic rights of existence can cause a far-reaching change in their system of personal values. It encourages each individual who searches for the meaning of life to translate these ideas into action.
32.Who does the author think can reach their destination more easily?
A.Busy drivers. B.Traffic-rule makers.
C.Hurrying cyclists. D.Traffic-law observers.
33.What does the underlined word “single-mindedly” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Unwillingly. B.Hesitantly. C.Determinedly. D.Liberatedly.
34.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.How to accept responsibilities fully.
B.How to achieve our goals properly.
C.How to train ourselves efficiently.
D.How to interpret things subjectively.
35.What is the meaning of life based on?
A.The basic rights of existence.
B.The ignorance of natural laws.
C.The translation of human ideas.
D.The change of our personal path.

Science has long been a 56 (rely) foundation of human civilization, and its ability to meet people’s anticipation comes from its firm commitment to truth.
The Imperfect Bowl
Ben stared at the clay (黏土) on the spinning wheel. His art teacher, Ms. Lena, had shown the class how to make a perfect bowl. “Find the center, be gentle with your hands,” she had advised. But Ben’s hands felt awkward, and the wheel seemed to have a mind of its own. For three class periods, he had tried and failed. His earlier creations sat on the shelf — a row of uneven, crooked (歪斜) shapes that were now hard and dry. They were a constant reminder of his struggle, and frustration grew within him. All he wanted was to create something beautiful and perfect, just like the model Ms. Lena had placed at the front of the room.
This was his last opportunity during this project. Taking a deep breath, he wet his hands and tried once more. He pressed down firmly, his entire attention being focused on the cool, wet clay. To his surprise, it felt different this time. The clay seemed to respond to his touch, rising steadily and smoothly. A wave of excitement passed through him as a tall, well-shaped bowl began to take form. He was finally close to success!
However, in a moment of distraction, his thumb slipped and pressed too hard into the soft wall of the bowl, creating a deep, obvious dent (凹痕). Ben’s heart immediately felt heavy. Disappointment, sharp and bitter, washed over him. It was ruined, again. He had a strong urge to destroy the clay and start over, but the class bell was about to ring. Time had run out.
He stared at the damaged bowl, feeling utterly defeated. Ms. Lena appeared beside him, whispering, “Let the clay tell you where it wants to go — Flaws (瑕疵) aren’t always mistakes; they can simply be the first lines of a story.” Her words steadied his fingers. He picked up a carving tool and began to work on a new design.

Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my great honor to stand here and deliver a speech themed “Small Acts Make a Big Difference”.
Indeed, we should never undervalue the power of small deeds: a kind gesture, a helping hand, or even a bright smile. It’s these tiny acts that truly brighten our daily life. Therefore, let’s start right here, right now: volunteer at the library, participate in campus clean-ups, or simply offer a listening ear to those who need to talk. Every small act, done with kindness, contributes to a more friendly and connected community.
Great changes begin with small steps. Together, let’s strive to do small things with great love.
Thank you!
As Ben finished his work, a mix of uncertainty and pride filled his heart. He carefully placed it on the display shelf, where it stood out among the smoother bowls. When Ms. Lena passed by, she paused and picked it up. Ben waited nervously for her comments. She ran her finger over the carved pattern and gave a warm, knowing smile. “Sometimes, the best art comes from a happy accident,” she said quietly. Her words lifted a weight off his shoulders, and his pride began to outweigh his doubt.
Ms. Lena then invited the class to gather around the display shelf. She held up Ben’s glazed bowl, which now shone under the lights. “Look at this one,” she said. “The artist met a problem but didn’t quit. He worked with it and created something with its own story. That is real creativity.” A few students nodded, and Ben noticed one of them pointing gently at the delicate pattern around the dent. In that moment, he felt seen not for a perfect outcome, but for a thoughtful journey. Ben finally understood that true growth isn’t about being perfect, but about how you beautifully repair your own cracks.

M: It’s a nice collection.
W: Sure. Especially these. Look, this one from China is wearing a traditional Chinese dress. The dress is often made of silk with detailed patterns. The colors are rich, usually in red, gold or purple, which symbolize good fortune. What a beautiful piece of art! This is a good way to know about the traditions, customs and beliefs of a country.
M: Wonderful. I used to collect things too when I was your age.
W: Tell me about it.
M: When I used to go to the post office, I was always interested in the small, colorful items on the envelopes. So I started to collect them from all over the world, and I learned a lot about different countries. Some featured beautiful landscapes, historical figures or cultural symbols.
W: That’s cool. Do you still have your collection?
M: Yes, it’s in a special album. I haven’t added to it in years, but it’s still a great memory from my childhood.

W: I want to improve my fitness.
M: Great. Do you have a specific fitness goal?
W: Not really. I get tired really fast when walking up stairs.
M: Got it. We have forty-minute basic fitness classes twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are perfect for beginners. We also offer advanced fitness classes on Wednesdays. They are more suitable for those who already have some exercise experience.
W: The basic classes sound good for me. Do I need to bring anything special?
M: Just a towel in a water bottle. Also, before your first class you need a quick fitness test. It’s mainly to check your basic physical condition so we can make sure the training is safe for you.
W: That makes total sense. I was a little worried about keeping up, but this test makes me feel more at ease, knowing that class will fit my condition.
M: There are a few more things to note. You’d better avoid heavy meals right before a workout. Always ask a trainer if you’re unsure how to use a machine and you can get started after filling out the health form.
W: Okay, thanks, I’ll do that.

M: There are many different types of writing, such as essays, letters and speeches. Whatever your reason is and whatever your style is, there are some tips that will help you improve your writing. Firstly, be clear about your purpose. The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing. Whatever you write, keep your purpose in mind at all times to avoid going off topic. Secondly, start with an outline. Far too often people write without an outline. Whatever you are writing, creating a clear outline is the first step to getting your message across quickly and in the most effective way. Thirdly, write for readers, not for yourself. Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write. Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for. Lastly, write for the ear, not for the eye. Once you’ve finished a draft of your writing, read it out loud. You’ll hear something that sounds awkward.

A
Often, there is a false idea that one must be “in-the-know” to truly appreciate artworks.
【答案】21.C 22.D 23.B

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.D 27.A
根据第一段中“More often they describe futures that sound impressive: consulting, leadership roles at major companies. Their plans are polished. (他们更多描述的是听起来令人印象深刻的未来:咨询、大公司的领导职位。他们的计划很完善。)”以及第二段中“They have thought about what role they want, but they haven't yet thought about how it fits with the activities they like to do and the people they care about. (他们想过自己想要什么角色,但还没有想过这个角色如何与他们喜欢做的事情和关心的人相匹配。)”可知,人们之所以无法描述一个“普通的周二”,是因为他们只关注职位和目标本身,却不了解这份工作日常具体涉及什么。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Early in my career, I was chasing a promotion I thought I wanted. (在我职业生涯早期,我在追逐一个我以为自己想要的晋升。)”以及“At 9 p.m., alone in the office, I looked at my cold takeout and found this was my third late night that week. I had no energy to call my family, no memory of what I'd eaten for lunch. (晚上9点,独自在办公室,我看着冷掉的外卖,发现这已经是那周第三个加班的夜晚了。我没有精力给家人打电话,甚至不记得午饭吃了什么。)”可知,作者早期的职业生活是目标驱动但非常疲惫的。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The former belief that lasting fulfillment waits at the finish line is what psychologists call the “arrival fallacy.” (心理学家将持久的满足感在终点线等着这一先前的信念称为“到达谬误”。)”可知,有“到达谬误”心态的人认为幸福在目标完成之后才会到来。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I am not to discourage ambition, but it needs a reality check. Our everyday isn't a means to a few milestones. Life is enjoyed through the ordinary Tuesdays we spend living it. (我并不是要打击雄心壮志,但它需要一次现实检验。我们的日常不是通往几个里程碑的手段。生活是通过我们度过的那些普通周二来享受的。)”可知,作者认为雄心壮志应该立足于真实的日常生活,不能脱离生活实际。
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据第三段中“Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares mindless scrolling to “brain candy” — momentarily pleasurable but lacking in meaning.(社会心理学教授艾琳・韦斯特盖特将无意义的刷手机行为比作“大脑糖果”—— 能带来片刻愉悦,却毫无深层价值。)”
根据第四段中“In a 2022 study, people predicted they would hate 20 minutes alone doing nothing, yet afterward reported greater enjoyment than expected. According to researcher Kou Murayama, the ability to mentally wander — to reflect on past experiences, and consider others’ viewpoints — is a distinctly human capacity that boosts learning and helps understand others.(在2022年的一项研究中,人们预测他们会讨厌20分钟什么都不做的独处,但事后报告的享受程度比预期的要高。根据研究人员村山浩的说法,在精神上漫游的能力——反思过去的经历,考虑他人的观点——是一种明显的人类能力,可以促进学习并帮助理解他人。)”可知,2022年的研究被用来证明白日梦被低估了。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Even when people are not actively thinking, their brains remain active in a so-called default mode (默认模式), allowing ideas to connect in new ways. It’s especially helpful for complex problems.(即使人们没有积极思考,他们的大脑仍然以所谓的默认模式保持活跃,让想法以新的方式连接起来。这对复杂问题特别有帮助。)”可知,默认模式表明不专注的思考激发创造力。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“But studies suggest if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, there could be some serious benefits.(但研究表明,如果你抵制这种冲动,让你的思想开小差,可能会有一些严重的好处。)”
【答案】32.D 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第二段“On the roads there are traffic rules, in football there are the rules of the game, and in nature there are the natural laws. For those who respect these rules, the corresponding (相应的) activities or deeds are easier to accomplish.(道路上有交通规则,足球运动中有比赛规则,自然界中有自然法则。对于那些遵守这些规则的人来说,相应的活动或行为更容易完成。)”可知,遵守交通法规的人更容易达成目标。故选D。
33.词句猜测题。根据第四段“The more single-mindedly a person follows this rule in all his decision-making, the closer he gets to his goal of inner peace and harmony.(一个人在所有决策中越single-mindedly遵循这一规则,就越接近内心平静与和谐的目标。)”
根据第五段“Our subconscious (潜意识) helps us with subjective perception: the activation (激活) of our goals, and additional mechanisms permit us to interpret things so that we can efficiently train for the goals mentioned previously. We develop our awareness and accept the full responsibility for our life. This is our personal path to harmony and inner peace.(我们的潜意识通过主观感知帮助我们:激活我们的目标,而额外的机制允许我们解读事物,以便我们能够有效地为前面提到的目标进行训练。我们提升自己的意识,并为自己的生活承担全部责任。这是我们通往和谐与内心平静的个人途径。)”可知,第五段主要围绕“如何正确实现我们的目标”展开,讲述了实现目标、通往内心和谐的具体方式。故选B。
35.细节理解题。根据第三段“We have got to know the most important rule on the earth which all the earth’s inhabitants must follow. This rule says: Every being has an equal right to live here, to develop here and to carry out his tasks here. Because of its importance for everything on the earth, we call this rule the basic rights of existence.(我们已经了解到地球上所有居民都必须遵循的最重要的规则。这条规则是:每个生命都有平等的权利在这里生存、在这里发展、在这里完成自己的使命。由于它对地球上所有事物的重要性,我们称这条规则为基本生存权。)”以及最后一段“It encourages each individual who searches for the meaning of life to translate these ideas into action.(它激励每个追寻生命意义的人将这些理念付诸行动。)” 故选A。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

One possible version:

A.Phone addiction is avoidable.
B.Daydreaming is undervalued.
C.Being alone promotes learning.
D.Self-reflection defines humans.
30.What does the default mode suggest?
A.Unfocused thinking fuels creativity.
B.Intentional effort brings new ideas.
C.Complex tasks require active minds.
D.Routines involve little brain activity.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Maintain Focus in the Digital Age
B.Discover the Joy of Being Truly Alone
C.Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind
D.Explore Secret Benefits of Social Daydreaming
