Paris is one of the most important and influential cities in the world. In terms of tourism, Paris is the second most visited city in Europe after London. Everyone knows all about the iconic sights in Paris, such as the Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum. But what about other facts that your average guide book doesn’t tell you?
•Every year the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris on July 14th 1789. Usually the jail held political prisoners but on the day the Bastille was stormed there were only 7 prisoners in the jail, none of political significance, and four of them had been jailed for check-forging(伪造支票).
• Paris is called the City of Lights. But it has nothing to do with the power used to illuminate the Eiffel Tower or the streetlights of the city. Lights in this case, means intellectuals, referring to the high-concentration of writers, artists and academics that have always been drawn to the city.
•Shakespeare And Company is the most famous English-language bookshop in Paris and it is named after the original store, owned by Sylvia Beach, which published James Joyce’s classic novel Ulysses in 1922. Now it has been a salon for writers and readers in Paris for more than seventy years.
• Paris is a city with a long, interesting but sadly a blood-stained history. Paris’ Latin motto is “Fluctuat nec mergitur” meaning “It is tossed by the waves, but does not sink.”

Do I think the sky is falling? Sort of.
My husband and I were recently in Egypt, where the temperature was a bit warm for my tiny princess self. So, we left Egypt. Back home, my dearest friends struggled with health stuff, with family craziness...
The game of life is hard, and a lot of us are playing hurt.
I ache for the world but naturally I’m mostly watching the Me Movie, where balance and strength are beginning to fail. What can we do as the creaking elevator of age slowly arrive? The main solution is to get outside every day, ideally with friends. Old friends — even thoughts of them — are my comfort.
Recently I was walking along a beach with Neshama. We go back 50 years. She is 84, short and strong. Every so often, she bent down somewhat tentatively (踌躇地) and picked up small items into a small cloth bag.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m picking up micro litter. I try to help where I can.”
I reminded her of an old story. A great warhorse comes upon a tiny sparrow (麻雀) lying on its back with its feet in the air, eyes tightly shut with effort. The horse asks it what it’s doing.
“I’m trying to help hold back the darkness.”
The horse laughs loudly, “That is so funny. What do you weigh?”
And the sparrow replies, “One does what one can.”
This is what older age means. We do what we can.
We continued our walk. Neshama bent tentatively to pick up bits of litter and started to slip, but I caught her and we laughed. We are so physically vulnerable in older age, but friendship makes it all a rowing machine for the soul. We can take it, as long as we feel and give love, and laugh gently at ourselves as we fall apart. We know by a certain age the great lie in our life — if you do or achieve this or that, you will be happy and rich. No. Love and service make us rich.
4. What does the author say about her present life?
A. She leads a balanced life. B. She enjoys meeting old friends.
C. She is really into movies. D. She struggles with family crises.
5. Why did the author mention the sparrow?
A. To confirm Neshama’s fear. B. To offer her comfort.
C. To change Neshama’s mind. D. To show her approval.
6. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Physical weakness. B. The great lie.
C. The rowing machine. D. The broken soul.
7. What largely determines happiness in older age according to the author?
A. Achieving important life goals. B. Enjoying life as you can.
C. Living a life of love and service. D. Loving what is being done.

Teri Russo, who provided food, shelter and clothing for people with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合征), died at 82. She, an Advance Woman of Achievement who spent her life fighting for “the children of God”, believed that children with Down Syndrome (DS) were often treated badly and neglected based on what they look like. Ms. Russo devoted her life to disabled, abandoned children. Her motto was to live life to the fullest with love in your heart and a smile on your face and remember never to hurt anyone.
Born in Rosebank, Ms. Russo was the eldest child of Dorothy and Louis Russo, who moved to Grasmere during the early 1950s. Educated at St. John Villa Academy, Ms. Russo then joined the U. S. Navy and went to California where she worked for children with Down Syndrome as a nurse. It was at that time that she first met children with Down Syndrome.
In 1972, she started Down Syndrome Learning Center in Tottenville, but later, because of a lack of funding, she moved the school to her home. The program included kindergarten and graded elementary classes, as well as reading classes, a wood shop, day trips and a sleep away camp.
Early on there weren’t too many programs for children with disabilities and they didn’t start school until they were 3 years old. Ms. Russo felt they were being cheated out of an education during the years that are the most developmental.
Throughout the years, she applied to city and state officials for better programs for Down Syndrome children. Over the years she helped place a number of Down Syndrome children, including 11 from Willowbrook, in adoptive or foster families.
She stressed parents shouldn’t be influenced by negative labels schools and medical professionals used in describing children’s abilities. “Professionals always tell you what they (DS children) cannot do,” she once said. “Keep them stimulated. You treat them more towards the normal, not the exception, and you will get more out of your child.”
8. What left children with Down Syndrome overlooked according to Ms. Russo?
A. Their abilities. B. Their physical appearances.
C. Their movements. D. Their disappointed parents.
9. What made Ms. Russo start Down Syndrome Learning Center?
A. The internal calling to help. B. The availability of enough money.
C. The repeated requests of parents. D. The growing number of DS children.
10. What does Ms. Russo want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Society needs to change the attitude towards DS children.
B. Professionals often underestimate the DS children’s abilities.
C. Parents should have faith in their children’s potential to encourage growth.
D. Parents should accept their children’s limitations and provide special treatment.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Teri Russo devoted her life to fighting for DS children.
B. A devoted nurse tried her best to explore Down Syndrome.
C. Programs Teri Russo successfully started helped DS children.
D. DS children face more challenges than normal people expect.
D
Oil leaks (泄漏) at sea pose risks to water life and people. Attempts to remove that oil tend to be messy and costly and are often not very effective. But scientists have found a new way to absorb that sticky pollution: cork (软木).
Past research showed that cork could collect oil. Treating cork with lasers (激光) speeds up the pace at which cork picks up oil on water, reports Yuchun He, a professor at Central South University in Changsha, China.
His team came across the new treatment by accident. The team had been using lasers to carve patterns into wood. These researchers hoped the patterns might help them build electronic devices from the wood. They’d never tried carving cork before. But when they did, something unexpected happened.
The cork darkened. That change suggested cork can transform light into heat. They already knew that untreated cork could absorb oil. But adding heat could help. Oil is highly thick. But oil gets thinner when it warms up. And thinner oil should more easily soak (浸透) into cork or stick to its surface.
The scientists had a feeling that tiny holes created by the laser might help the cork store more heat. This treated cork should warm up more quickly than usual in sunlight. And that warmth should thin nearby oil, making it easier for the cork to absorb it.
To test this, they compared small, thin slices of original cork to laser-treated cork. In the dark, both corks took about 45 minutes to absorb just two drops of oil. With a camera, the researchers watched as this happened. Then, they repeated the experiment in sunlight and compared the results. In the sun, the untreated cork needed 10 minutes to absorb the oil while the laser-treated cork took just two minutes.
The treated cork is an example of something that can clean up oil leaks. However, the new tests took place in a lab, so cork cleanup will need to be tested in real-world conditions too — at sea. That will determine if the technique works on a large scale and without harming water life.
12. What does “the new treatment” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Carving patterns into original wood. B. Collecting oil with laser-treated cork.
C. Absorbing pollution with cutup wood. D. Making e-devices with laser-treated cork.
13. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The basic logic behind the finding. B. The design of the team’s experiment.
C. The skill of making thick oil thinner D. The method of turning light into heat.
14. Which of the following performs best in absorbing oil?
A. Untreated cork in darkness. B. Laser-treated cork in darkness.
C. Untreated cork in sunlight. D. Laser-treated cork in sunlight.
15. What is likely to be the focus of the follow-up study?
A. Conducting more experiments in labs. B. Testing treated cork in natural oceans.
C. Starting large scale cleanup programs. D. Researching the damage to water life.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.

B 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段“Past research showed that cork could collect oil. Treating cork with lasers speeds up the pace at which cork picks up oil on water(过去的研究表明,软木可以收集油。用激光处理软木可以加快软木在水面上吸收油的速度)”可知,第三段中划线词the new treatment指的是用激光处理过的软木收集石油。故选B。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The cork darkened. That change suggested cork can transform light into heat. They already knew that untreated cork could absorb oil. But adding heat could help. Oil is highly thick. But oil gets thinner when it warms up. And thinner oil should more easily soak into cork or stick to its surface.(软木变暗了。这一变化表明软木可以将光转化为热。他们已经知道未经处理的软木可以吸收石油。但增加热量会有帮助。石油非常稠。但石油变暖后会变稀。较稀的石油应该更容易浸入软木或粘在软木表面)”可知,第四段主要讲的是这一发现背后的基本逻辑。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“To test this, they compared small, thin slices of original cork to laser-treated cork. In the dark, both corks took about 45 minutes to absorb just two drops of oil. With a camera, the researchers watched as this happened. Then, they repeated the experiment in sunlight and compared the results. In the sun, the untreated cork needed 10 minutes to absorb the oil while the laser-treated cork took just two minutes.(为了验证这一点,他们将小块薄片的原始软木与激光处理过的软木进行了比较。在黑暗中,两块软木都需要大约45分钟才能吸收两滴油。研究人员用相机记录了这一过程。然后,他们在阳光下重复了这个实验,并比较了结果。在阳光下,未经处理的软木需要10分钟才能吸收石油,而激光处理过的软木只需要2分钟)”可知,在阳光下用激光处理过的软木吸收石油的效果最好。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the new tests took place in a lab, so cork cleanup will need to be tested in real-world conditions too — at sea. That will determine if the technique works on a large scale and without harming water life.(然而,新的测试是在实验室进行的,因此软木清理也需要在现实世界的条件下进行测试——在海上。这将决定这项技术是否能在不伤害水生生物的情况下大规模应用)”可推知,后续研究的重点可能是在自然海洋中测试处理过的软木。故选B。

【解析】
【导语】这篇文章主要介绍了如何通过关注健康监测、调整营养饮食、安排适宜运动以及重视情感陪伴这四个方面,为老年犬提供全面而细致的关怀。
【16题详解】
前文“Sharing life with a dog is a journey of love that deepens with every passing year. As our companions enter their golden years, what they need for their continued comfort and happiness will change. (与狗狗共度生活是一段充满爱的旅程,这份爱会随着岁月的流逝而愈发深厚。当我们的伙伴步入老年之时,它们对于持续的舒适与快乐的需求也会发生变化。)”提到老年犬对舒适和快乐的需求会变化,后文“It involves a comprehensive (全面的) approach that covers their changing health, mobility, and emotional well-being. (这需要采取一种全面的方法,涵盖它们健康状况的变化、行动能力以及情绪健康等方面。)”指出满足其需求需要全面的方法,因此G项“Taking care of your senior dog goes beyond regular walks and meals. (照顾你的老年犬,远不止常规的散步和喂食。)”符合语境,指出照顾老年犬有更高的要求,既承接前文的需求改变,又引出后文的方法,其中的Taking care of your senior dog是后文It指代的对象。
前文“Remember to keep a close eye on their behavior. (记得要密切留意它们的行为表现。)”提醒关注老年犬的行为表现,因此D项“Any small relevant shifts are often the first clues. (任何微小的相关变化通常是第一线索。)”符合语境,解释为何要关注其行为,承接前文。
【18题详解】
前文“As your dog ages, their nutritional needs will change, too. It’s essential to change their diet and monitor their weight to prevent any obesity-related health issues. (随着狗狗年龄的增长,它们的营养需求也会发生变化。需要调整其饮食并监测体重,以预防任何与肥胖相关的健康问题。)”建议调整老年犬的饮食并监控体重,后文“Also consider giving supplements (补充) such as a multivitamin which includes joint-supporting ingredients, as well as healthy fats which help improve brain function and support healthy skin. (还可以考虑给老年犬喂食一些补充剂,比如含有促进关节健康的成分的复合维生素,以及有助于提升大脑功能和维护皮肤健康的健康脂肪。)”进一步说明调整饮食的具体方法,因此A项“Choose high-quality senior dog food. (选择高品质的老年犬粮。)”符合语境,是调整饮食的首要具体方法,承接前文,和后文是递进关系。
【19题详解】
前文“Your dog might not be as lively as they once were, so adjusting their exercise routine makes sense. (你的狗狗可能不像以前那样精力充沛了,所以调整一下它们的运动计划是合理的。)”建议调整老年犬的运动,后文“Activities like swimming are great, too, as they provide all-round exercise to maintain muscle mass and joint flexibility without putting stress on their old bones. (像游泳这样的活动也很棒,因为它们提供全面的锻炼,以保持肌肉量和关节灵活性,而且不会给年迈的骨骼带来压力。)”进一步举例游泳这种锻炼方式,因此E项“Think gentle walks instead of demanding physical activities. (考虑温和的散步,而非要求高的体育活动。)”符合语境,举例散步这一锻炼方式,承接前文,和后文游泳的例子并列。
【20题详解】
后文“Spend quality time with your senior dog, doing some activities they love. Your companionship is invaluable to them. (和你的老年犬一起度过美好时光,做一些它们喜欢的活动。你的陪伴对它们来说是无价之宝。)”建议陪伴老年犬,满足其情感需求,因此C项“Emotional well-being should not be ignored. (情感健康不应被忽视。)”符合语境,指出情感健康的重要性,作为段首句统领后文。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.
