Elise and Mei Lin were neighbors and classmates. They were good friends and would always spend time together. One day, they joined a school camp together. They took part in a treasure hunt (寻宝) for the first time and decided to win.
During the camp, Mrs. Tan, their teacher, held a briefing (简介) for all the teams. Elise and Mei Lin didn’t pay attention. They were busy talking about how to win the hunt. After the briefing, each team was given ten minutes to fix their plans before setting off. Elise and Mei Lin argued about whose plan was better. After ten minutes, they still could not decide and went to look for the treasure without having a plan. As a result, they could not find any treasure.
When they realised they were losing, Elise and Mei Lin felt awful and started blaming each other. “You didn’t collect the map!” Mei Lin shouted. “You didn’t listen carefully during the briefing,” Elise argued.
Mrs. Tan saw them arguing and advised, “Good friends should be working together instead of just arguing.” After hearing that, they both felt sorry for what they did and began working together as a team. Even though they did not win the treasure hunt, they learned that working together as a team was more important than winning. I’m Kathy from Canada. Right now, my family and I are visiting friends in China, and we’re having a wonderful time here.
We’re all on a tour of Huangguoshu Waterfall (瀑布). Let me tell you, it’s so amazing! The water is pouring fast over the mountain, making a big noise. You can hear it from far away. It’s very strong, and the little drops of water fly high into the air as they rush down to the ground. We’re wearing raincoats, but we are still getting very wet! Even so, we’re having great fun! Look, my father is taking many photos to remember this exciting moment.
After watching the wonderful waterfall, we are walking along (沿着) the path (小路) near it. Our Chinese friends are telling us many interesting stories about Huangguoshu Waterfall, such as how the name comes from a love story.
In the evening, our Chinese friends are treating us to a delicious dinner. At the table, we are sharing our life stories from different countries, and we are all feeling that this trip (旅行) is really meaningful. I can’t wait to explore (探索) more places in China next time, like the lovely West Lake in Hangzhou or the famous Great Wall in Beijing!
24.Why do Kathy and her family come to China?
A.To visit friends. B.To study the history. C.To try Chinese food.

What is the key to a happy life? Many people believe fun comes first. At the same time, they think that having strict self-discipline (自律能力) means we can never have fun. In their eyes, people with strong self-discipline live a boring life with no happy moments. They think such people have no chance to enjoy small joys in life.
Their idea is very different from a study by researcher William Hofmann and his team. The team looked deep into the connection between self-discipline and happiness. Their final conclusion (结论) surprised many people: stronger self-discipline usually brings more happiness.
What is self-discipline? It is the ability (能力) to stop sudden impulses (冲动). It helps people choose useful long-term (长期的) goals, not just enjoy easy and short joy.
The researchers collected and recorded people’s daily feelings carefully for their study. The final results told us the secret behind true happiness in two ways. First, self-discipline can make people feel better and less worried every day. Second, people’s unhappiness does not come from self-discipline itself. It comes from endless conflicts between short-term wishes and long-term goals. People with poor self-discipline often feel worried when making choices. But people with good self-discipline seldom face fights between their short-term wishes and long-term goals. When such problems appear, they can work them out easily and stay relaxed.
It is time for us to change our old ideas on self-discipline. Self-discipline never stops us from being happy, but it brings us long-term happiness. The good thing is that everyone can get better at self-discipline little by little. We can start with small changes, like finishing important tasks first. It is a great way to live a better and happier life.
28.Why does the writer talk about the study by William Hofmann and his team?
A.To introduce what self-discipline is. B.To tell people how to be self-disciplined.
C.To show the bad things of self-discipline. D.To give a different idea about self-discipline.
29.According to the passage, what is a good example of a self-disciplined student?
A.Tim spends all money on a toy.
B.Kate eats chips on her bed for easy joy.
C.Jane stays up all night to play on her phone.
D.Mike stays away from computer games when studying.
30.What does the word “conflicts” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Fights. B.Mistakes. C.Changes. D.Choices.
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People with self-discipline often feel worried. B.Self-discipline is hard to develop in daily life.
C.Self-discipline helps people live happier lives. D.Short-term wishes are better than long-term goals.

第三节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
In recent years, more and more elderly people in China have been building lasting friendships, which bring them joy and support in their later lives.
Ms. Wang, 72 years old, lives in Beijing. She made friends with three other women—Ms. Li, Ms. Zhang, and Ms. Zhao—at a community garden five years ago. Every morning, they meet at the garden to do tai chi (太极) together. After that, they sit on a bench and chat about their daily lives—their children, their grandchildren, or interesting things they saw on TV. “Before I met them, I felt very lonely,” Ms. Wang said. “My children work in other cities, so I live alone. But now, I look forward to every morning because I know I will see my friends.”
These four friends also help each other in many ways. Last year, Ms. Li fell and hurt her leg. Ms. Wang, Ms. Zhang, and Ms. Zhao took turns visiting her and bringing her meals. They also helped her clean her house and take care of her plants. “They are like my family,” Ms. Li said. “I don’t know what I would have done without them.”
Another group of elderly friends in Shanghai has a different way of staying connected. They formed a “book club” three years ago. Every Saturday afternoon, they meet at a community center to read and discuss books. Most of the books they read are about Chinese history or traditional culture. “Reading together helps us learn new things, and discussing the books brings us closer,” said Mr. Chen, 78 years old. “We also share our own stories and experiences while talking about the books. It’s very interesting.”
These friendships are not just fun—they also have many health benefits. Studies show that elderly people with strong friendships are less likely to feel lonely or depressed (抑郁的). They also have better physical health, because they are more active and take better care of themselves when they have friends to support them.
Many communities in China are now encouraging elderly people to make friends. They organize activities like tai chi classes, book clubs, and craft (手工) workshops. These activities give elderly people a chance to meet others and build new friendships. “We want to help elderly people live happy and healthy lives,” said a community worker in Guangzhou. “Friendship is an important part of that.”
56.Where did Ms. Wang meet her three friends?
57.When was the “book club” in Shanghai formed?
58.Why do Mr. Chen and his friends read and discuss books at the community center?
59.How can the elderly get more friends?
60.What can you do to help your grandparents feel less lonely?

【答案】28.D 29.D 30.A 31.C
【导语】本文纠正大众认为自律等同于无趣的错误观点,借助一项研究说明更强的自律会带来更多长久幸福感,并解释自律的含义、自律减少内心矛盾的原理以及培养自律的方法。

30.原文第四段提到“it comes from endless conflicts between short-term wishes and long-term goals... people with good self-discipline seldom face fights between their short-term wishes and long-term goals”,后文用“fights”同义替换conflicts,说明了conflicts词义为Fights。
31.原文第二段提到“stronger self-discipline usually brings more happiness.”,最后一段提到“Self-discipline never stops us from being happy, but it brings us long-term happiness.”,说明了我们能从文中得知自律帮助人们拥有更幸福的生活。

A Meaningful Family Activity
Last month, our family had a “garage sale” to raise money for a local charity. We spent the whole morning collecting old books, toys and clothes.
During the sale, we worked as a team. Dad set up the tables, Mom talked to customers, and my brother and I handed out flyers. A lady bought my old violin and said she would teach it to her daughter. By the end, we raised 800 yuan.
