The smallest state in the United States is Rhode Island. But it has a big mystery. The mystery is a tower in the city of Newport.
The tower is made of huge grey rocks. The rocks are in many shapes and sizes. But they fit together perfectly.
The tower is a strange building. It has many high doorways. It has small windows. But the windows are so far up that no one can reach them.

People have studied the mystery tower. But no one knows who built it. Some people think it is an old windmill (风车). They say it was built by people who lived there hundreds of years ago.

So, it’s exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good scores?
Some students sleep with the textbook under the pillow (枕头) in the hope that knowledge will be magically going to their brain. But it doesn’t work. The best way is to practice repeatedly over a long period of time instead of learning all things in a short time before exams. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you’ll remember more than if you study for five hours on one day.
________— get a pen and paper and start working. Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at getting back the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky, a professor of Psychology at Kent State University in the US; suggests that “You start by reading a textbook with your favorite pens and colors; and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so, you actually try to test yourselves on them.”
Good revision (复习) should give you confidence. But if you are still worried, some special traditions are suggested. In Japan it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a howl of rice with egg and pork pieces; The name of the dish makes people think of the word “Katsu”, meaning “winning”, For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their “lucky socks”.
The bottom line is that you need to stay healthy. Eating good meals, drinking enough water and sleeping well on the eve of the test help a lot. They make it easier for you to get success.
Good luck in your exam!

Inner painting (内画), a kind of traditional Chinese art, is a national-level intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产). Inner painting artists traditionally create works on the inner surface of glass bottles by using special fine brushes. The brushes must be able to enter the tiny bottles. It has a long history and there are mainly four leading places: Beijing, Hebei, Shandong and Guangdong.
When we look at the inner painting of an object, we experience an amazing beauty. Designs on the painting often express people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most popular designs are landscapes, flowers and birds.
The production of inner painting is difficult because it requires high precision (精确度) and the process of painting is totally reversed (反向的). During painting, there is no room for corrections. And a shaky hand leads to mistakes. Only those skilled and confident in their abilities can paint well. Most artists need to learn inner painting for years before creating great and fine pieces.
Inner painting has its advantages because it is so special. But it also faces challenges such as reducing market needs, and fewer learners and talented artists to help it develop.
Luckily, today’s artists are trying to make inner painting more popular in our lives. One of the artists invented a new type of brush, and drawing can be faster now. Some young artists are using social media to help more people learn about inner painting skills.

We know many musical instruments well, such as pianos, violins, drums and so on. What about the erhu? The erhu is a traditional Chinese instrument. It is the most popular of the huqin family, and it has a long history.
The modern erhu developed from the xiqin, which was played by many ethnic minorities (少数民族) during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, musicians began to use the erhu to perform different kinds of music, and it became quite a popular instrument. With the rise of some forms of folk art, the art of the erhu developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It became an important accompanying (伴奏) instrument in different folk music. At present, it is used in both traditional and modern music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument. One of the most famous musical pieces played on the erhu is Erquan Yingyue.
As the erhu was mainly played by common people and the playing skills were passed down orally (口头地), there are few written records about the erhu that can be found. To study the history and the development of the erhu, historians usually turn to ancient paintings.

B. Writing while reading is just a waste of time.
C. To memorize the knowledge, some people even choose to sleep with the textbook.
D. The bottom line is that you need to study hard.
70. What’s the best title for the passage?
