The power of small acts
We often think that living a meaningful life requires doing something extraordinary — climbing Mount Everest, inventing a new technology, or becoming a famous leader. But research suggests that small, everyday acts of kindness can be just as powerful.
A study from the University of California found that people who performed five small acts of kindness each week reported significantly higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. These acts did not need to be grand. Holding the door for someone, helping a classmate with homework, or simply smiling at a stranger all counted.
The key is consistency. Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a leading researcher in the field, explains that doing small good deeds regularly creates a "kindness habit." Over time, this habit changes how we see ourselves. We begin to think of ourselves as helpful, caring people — and that self-image makes us want to do even more good.
Schools across China have started "Kindness Week" programmes. Students are encouraged to write thank-you notes, help clean the school garden, or visit elderly neighbours. Teachers report that students who join these activities show improved relationships with classmates and a stronger sense of belonging.
Fan Jinshi once said, "A life's value is not measured by how much you gain, but by how much you give." Whether it is protecting ancient caves or picking up litter on the street, every act of giving adds meaning to our lives.
36. What does the research from the University of California show?
A. Only big acts of kindness can make people happy.
B. Small acts of kindness improve happiness and life satisfaction.
C. People who are kind are always famous.
D. Kindness has nothing to do with happiness.
37. According to Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, what is a "kindness habit"?
A. A habit of doing five big things every day.
B. A habit formed by doing small good deeds regularly.
C. A habit of studying hard every day.
D. A habit of helping only family members.
38. What happens when people develop a kindness habit?
A. They become tired of helping others.
B. They start to expect rewards for their kindness.
C. They see themselves as helpful and caring.
D. They stop doing small acts of kindness.
39. What do "Kindness Week" programmes in schools encourage students to do?
A. Study harder to get better grades.
B. Compete with each other to be the kindest.
C. Write thank-you notes and help clean the garden.
D. Stay at home and read books about kindness.
40. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Become Famous B. The Power of Small Acts
C. Why Schools Need Reform D. Fan Jinshi's Great Achievements
C
A letter to the future
Dear Future Me,
I am writing this letter to you today because I want to remind you of something important. Right now, I am 15 years old, sitting in my bedroom, listening to the rain outside. I have just finished reading the essay "The Peanut" by Xu Dishan, and it has changed the way I think about life.
Before reading it, I thought that a good life meant being successful, having a high-paying job, and driving a nice car. I wanted people to notice me, to praise me, to say, "Wow, you are amazing!" But the essay taught me that the most useful lives are often the least showy.
Think about peanuts. They grow underground, hidden from sight. They do not have bright red skins or hang from branches where everyone can admire them. Yet they feed millions of people. They make oil for cooking. They are affordable for even the poorest families. Their value lies not in how they look, but in what they do.
So, Future Me, I hope you have not forgotten this lesson. I hope that wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you remember that being useful is better than being admired. If you are a teacher, teach well. If you are a doctor, heal with kindness. If you are a parent, love your children with patience.
Do not chase attention. Chase meaning. Do not worry about praise. Worry about whether you have helped someone today. A life that serves others — even in small, hidden ways — is a life well lived.
I hope you are happy, Future Me. Not because the world is cheering for you, but because you know, deep down, that you have been a peanut — quiet, humble, and truly useful.
Yours,
15-year-old Me

A. They have bright red skins. B. They hang from branches beautifully.

The bamboo and the pine
Mr Chen is a retired teacher who lives in a small town in Zhejiang Province. Five years ago, he started a volunteer group called "Green Hands." The group plants trees, cleans rivers, and teaches children about environmental protection.
Every Saturday morning, Mr Chen and his team meet at the town square. They divide into small groups and work for about three hours. Some pick up rubbish along the riverbank. Others plant trees on the hillside. A few volunteers visit the local primary school to give talks about protecting nature.
"It started with just five people," Mr Chen said. "Now we have over 120 members, including students, teachers, farmers and even a few businessmen. Age does not matter. What matters is the willingness to do something good for our community."
Last year, Mr Chen's group planted over 3,000 trees. They also organised a "No Plastic Day" in the town, encouraging shops and restaurants to reduce single-use plastic. The local government was so impressed that they gave the group an award for community service.
"I am 68 years old now," Mr Chen smiled. "Some people say I should rest. But I believe that as long as I can still move, I should keep doing something useful. Like bamboo in the wind — flexible but never broken — we should keep standing tall for what is right."

A Person Who Has Influenced Me Most
The person who has influenced me most is my grandmother. She is a retired teacher who has spent over 40 years teaching in a rural primary school.
My grandmother never earned much money, but she changed the lives of hundreds of children. She often told me, "A teacher's job is not to gain fame, but to plant seeds of hope in young hearts." Even after retirement, she volunteers at the local library, reading stories to young children every weekend.
From her, I have learned the qualities of patience, kindness and selflessness. She taught me that a truly meaningful life is not about being admired by others, but about being useful to society.
Her example has influenced my future plan. I have decided to study education at university so that I can follow in her footsteps and become a teacher who makes a difference in children's lives.
