He is called the Father of Hybrid Rice, an ordinary-looking but extraordinary scientist. Present the title China’s most famous “farmer”.
3. Pre-teach core vocabulary and phrases with simple explanations and example sentences suitable for intermediate students:

People call Yuan Longping the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. In 1973, together with other scientists, he succeeded in developing hybrid rice. The introduction of this new product helped farmers produce much more rice and made China a leader in rice production. In 2020, he was still setting higher goals for super hybrid rice. Yuan Longping was a scientist of wide interests outside his work. He loved playing the violin, listening to music, reading, and swimming.

Tu Youyou was born in Zhejiang Province in 1930. From 1951 to 1955, she studied at the Peking University Health Science Centre. In 1973, she created a new kind of medicine that saved lots of people’s lives. In 1981, she gave a speech at a WHO meeting. She won the Nobel Prize in 2015. Up to now, she keeps reading and writing at home. She is a respected medical scientist all over the world.
