A
Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a rich family. From her early years, she exhibited an extraordinary tendency towards assisting others. In an era when society expected that a young woman of her status would marry into wealth and lead a comfortable and carefree life. Florence had a distinct vision. Nursing, during that period, was regarded as a lowly occupation, yet she was firmly convinced that her true calling lay in serving humanity through this very field.
When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, the news reached Florence. Florence heard about the terrible situation of the wounded soldiers and decided to take action. She established some well-known nursing schools, where she could pass on her knowledge and values to future generations. She also wrote several influential books on nursing practices, which became essential resources in the field. Her remarkable achievements not only enhanced the status of nurses but also had a far-reaching and profound impact on the healthcare. Around the globe, about 1 in 4 adults says they’re lonely. And the consequences of long-term social disconnection can be everything from an increased risk of heart attacks to dementia (痴呆). The following offers a road map to make connections.
Be curious. It’s easier to connect with people if you have shared interests or experiences, so start paying attention to what’s in your mind. What motivates you? What excites you? 30 If you know what’s meaningful or fun for you, it may lead you to an activity that connects you to others.
Make something. When experts advise making something, people will say, “Well, I’m not Picasso. I don’t know how to do a fancy painting.” Of course, you’re not! 31 You can try your grandma’s pie recipe or plant an herb garden that puts your thoughts and feelings about who you are on display — and express those thoughts and feelings to others.
32 Share something about yourself. It doesn’t have to be the darkest secret of your life, but just something other people might find interesting. Putting yourself out there requires a bit of a risk, and it’s the first step to real connection.
Find a group that matches your interests. Whether it’s volunteering for a cause or playing frisbee (飞盘), try to find others who share your interests. There’s even an online group that has a quirky shared interest: a fascination with brown bears in Alaska, which led to Fat Bear Week. In interactions with others, you can begin to reveal yourself and share the unique things that matter to you. 33
Other people’s loneliness matters too. 34 If loneliness goes unaddressed, people can end up in a world of hurt. If you see someone experiencing loneliness, ask them how they’re doing. Share your own experience of loneliness and how you get rid of it. Thus, helping others can also benefit yourself.
A.Pour out your hard feelings to strangers around you.
B.Loneliness can spread if we ignore the people around us.
C.Small, personal shares can be the start of a meaningful talk.
D.You don’t need to create “masterpieces” to express yourself.
E.This self-awareness will help you find people who align with your passions.
F.When you open up about what matters to you, others often follow suit.
G.Step out of your comfort zone to start a conversation.

11.They performed an (operate) on the patient to remove the tumor.
12.If you want to really take in the full experience, you should go to the fish market in Sydney early in the morning and watch the fish (prepare) for sale.
【答案】being prepared
故填being prepared。
13.This modern space station will allow astronauts to conduct many important experiments, greatly (further) our understanding of the outer space.

16.As is often the case, those without working experience are likely to be turned down when (apply) for a post.

, we can see lots of lovely animals.
Walking through the park
故填Walking through the park。
