On Dec. 26, Gelinne was having a cup of coffee at home, gazing out at frozen Beards River.Suddenly, his daughter cried “Look!” Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, barely skimming the treetops before coming down.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former sailor, realized it would land in the river. Without hesitation, he ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen river, far from shore, sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his previous training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So he and his son, John, pulled two kayaks(皮艇) out. “If it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne said.
The kayaks' paddles(桨) proved too weak, so the pair tried using sticks to push the kayaks along.Their first attempts left them spinning in circles. But with effort, they made progress. When Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, surrounded by open water. Gelinne pushed his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot and thinking, “What if he panics? What if I fall over?”
With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak's bow. Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice. But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice. He needed help.
Soon a police officer arrived and radioed for help. A boat from the local Department of Natural Resources appeared. It picked up the pilot, Steve, 71, and rushed him to safety, who would be treated for minor injuries. Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, exhausted, to shore.
The boat had arrived just in time, Gelinne recalled. “I'm 60 years old,” he says. “There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still, he was satisfied.
1.What was Gelinne's first reaction to the air crash?

D.The rescue was tougher than expected.
3.Why did Gelinne need help?

Virtue, by definition, is the moral excellence of a person. Morally excellent people have a character made up of virtues valued as good. They are honest, respectful, courageous, forgiving and kind, for example. They do the right thing, and don't bend to impulses, urges or desires, but act according to values and principles. Some might say good qualities are inborn. Actually, virtues need to be cultivated. With the habit of being virtuous, we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater happiness and fulfillment.
Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities of well-being. However, practicing virtues is not easy. So often we know that it takes perseverance to reach our goals, but we still never get there. We know that if we forgive, we'll be less angry. We know that it takes courage to accomplish great things. So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck?
Because we have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its outcome such as in these examples: kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build rapport;trust in a relationship creates valuable, meaningful relationships; gratitude in a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to how we can have a more fulfilling, new career; service to others can change lives, better neighborhoods and create stronger nations.
We know we are becoming more virtuous people, not only because of the above results but also because of the way other people respond to us. Our friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors will trust and rely on us. They will come to us for guidance and help. They will want to be around us because we inspire them to be better people. Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful and better life.
5.What can we know about virtuous people from the first paragraph?
A.They are born with virtue.
B.They never make a mistake.
C.They have a habit of doing good.
D.They act on the principle of profit.
6.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.It's hard to practice virtues.
B.It's a virtue to forgive others.
C.It takes courage to achieve goals.
D.Trust is necessary in a relationship.
7.What does the underlined word “rapport” mean in the third paragraph?
A.A good greeting. B.A great exchange.
C.A good goodbye. D.A close relationship.
8.What is the author's purpose in the last paragraph?
A.To encourage readers to be more virtuous.
B.To encourage readers to live a purposeful life.
C.To encourage readers to offer others guidance.
D.To encourage readers to develop others' potential.

Ⅲ.1.with/by 考查介词。 replace A with/by B表示“用B代替A”。故填with或by。
be elected as... 故填as。
tend to do sth. 故填to fall。
本句主干为“One such study aimed to see...”,其中aimed是谓语动词,而“ (publish) in 2023”是后置定语,修饰主语study。
Ⅳ.1.are in the/a majority 2.the first boy to reach
3.nothing is more precious than life
故填from。
故填was sent。
故填to help。
see sb. doing sth.
see sb. doing sth.
故填a。
10.Though/Although/While 考查连词。“she never married(她从未结婚)”与“she was known as the ‘mother of ten thousand babies’(她被称为‘万婴之母’)”之间是让步关系,且设空处位于句首,所以用Though或Although或While引导让步状语从句。
【高频词汇】 1.be familiar to sb.
2.account n.账号 3.(be) eager to do sth.
故填are sold。
例如:happy→happily; angry→angrily; lucky→luckily; heavy—heavily; noisy→noisily等。
故填a。
故填has。

7.exhausted adj.
根据第二段中的“As the plane disappeared behind the trees...he ran down to the waterfront.”
根据第五段中的“Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice. But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice.”
根据第二段中的“As the plane disappeared behind the trees...ran down to the waterfront.”可知,他看到飞机要落到河里,就毫不犹豫地跑到水边去救人,所以他是乐于助人的;根据第五段中的“Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, ‘Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.’” 故选A。

第二段中的“However, practicing virtues is not easy.” 故选A。
根据画线词所在句中的“kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build rapport(对心情糟糕的人友善能让其微笑并建立rapport)”可知,“kindness (友善)”的结果是“smile”和“build rapport”,二者应为积极的并列关系。
A项
根据最后一段最后一句“Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful and better life.” 故选A。
