The power of "yet"
Have you ever said, "I can't do this"? Next time, try adding one small word: "yet". The word "yet" can change everything.
Psychologist Carol Dweck from Stanford University has spent years studying how people deal with challenges. She found that people who believe their abilities can improve through hard work have what she calls a "growth mindset". These people are more likely to keep trying when things get difficult. On the other hand, people with a "fixed mindset" believe that their abilities are set in stone. When they fail, they often give up because they think they will never get better.
Dweck's research shows that simply changing the way we talk to ourselves can make a big difference. Saying "I can't solve this problem" leads to giving up. But saying "I can't solve this problem yet" leaves the door open for future success. The word "yet" reminds us that learning is a process.
Schools in the United States, the United Kingdom and China have started teaching students about the growth mindset. Instead of giving grades like A, B or C, some teachers now give feedback that focuses on effort. For example, instead of saying "You're so smart", a teacher might say "You worked really hard on this". This encourages students to keep trying even when the work is difficult.
The idea of "yet" is not just for school. It can be used in sports, music, art and even personal relationships. Whenever you feel like giving up, remember to add that one powerful word. It might just change your life.
36. What does Carol Dweck's research mainly study?
A. How to get high grades in school.
B. How people deal with challenges.
C. How to become a famous psychologist.
D. How different countries teach students.
37. What is a "growth mindset"?
A. Believing that abilities are fixed from birth.
B. Believing that only smart people can succeed.
C. Believing that abilities can improve through effort.
D. Believing that failure is always a bad thing.
38. According to the passage, what does the word "yet" do?
A. It makes us feel worse about failure.
B. It helps us accept that we will never improve.
C. It closes the door to future success.
D. It reminds us that learning takes time.
39. What kind of feedback do teachers with a growth mindset give?
A. "You're so smart." B. "You'll never understand this."
C. "You worked really hard on this." D. "You're not good at this subject."
40. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Get Good Grades B. The Magic of the Word "Yet"
C. Why Some People Are Smarter D. Carol Dweck's Life Story
C
Never giving up is an important quality, but it does not mean we should never change our goals. Sometimes, giving up on one thing allows us to find something better.
Take the story of a young man named James. When he was in high school, James dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player. He practised every day for years. However, at the age of 18, he suffered a serious knee injury. Doctors told him he would never play professionally again.
At first, James was heartbroken. He felt like his life was over. But after a few months of feeling sorry for himself, he decided to try something different. He started coaching younger players at a local sports centre. To his surprise, he discovered that he loved teaching the game even more than playing it.
James went on to study sports science at university. Today, he is a successful sports coach who has helped hundreds of young athletes achieve their dreams. He often tells his students, "Sometimes life closes one door so that another can open. Don't be afraid to let go of a dream that is no longer possible. It might lead you to an even better one."
This does not mean we should give up easily. Working hard and showing determination are still important. But it is also important to know when to change direction. The key is to hold on to the spirit of never giving up — not necessarily the exact goal. As long as you keep moving forward, you are never truly giving up.
41. What was James's dream when he was in high school?
A. To become a sports scientist.
B. To become a professional basketball player.
C. To become a doctor.
D. To become a basketball coach.
42. What happened to James at the age of 18?
A. He won a national basketball competition.
B. He got a place on a professional team.
C. He suffered a serious knee injury.
D. He decided to stop playing basketball.
43. How did James feel after his injury at first?
A. Excited about new opportunities. B. Angry at his doctors.
C. Heartbroken and hopeless. D. Relieved that he could rest.
44. What does James do now?
A. He plays basketball for a professional team.
B. He teaches PE at a high school.
C. He studies medicine at university.
D. He coaches young athletes.
45. What is the writer's main message in this passage?
A. We should never change our dreams.
B. Giving up is always a sign of weakness.
C. It's okay to change direction while keeping a strong spirit.
D. Sports injuries always end people's careers.

The Person Who Inspires Me Most
The person who inspires me most is Stephen Hawking. He was one of the greatest scientists in history, but his life was full of challenges.
When Hawking was only 21, he was diagnosed with a serious disease that slowly took away his ability to move. Doctors said he had only a few years to live. However, he never gave up. Although he could only move one finger in his later years, he continued his research and wrote many important books.
Hawking's strong will and positive attitude have deeply inspired me. Whenever I feel like giving up, I think of his words: "However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at." He taught me that nothing is impossible if we never give up.
