B Ordinal Numbers in Daily Life
Ordinal numbers are very useful in our daily lives. We use them to talk about dates, birthdays, positions, and orders. Knowing ordinal numbers can help us understand and express information more clearly.
We use ordinal numbers to say dates. For example, we say "May 1st" for Labor Day, "June 1st" for Children's Day, and "September 10th" for Teachers' Day. In English, we usually add "th" to most numbers to make them ordinal, like fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. But there are some special ones: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, and twelfth. These are exceptions, and we need to remember them.
We also use ordinal numbers to describe positions or rankings. For example, "She is the first in our class" means she is the top student. "This is my third time to visit Beijing" means I have been there twice before.
Ordinal numbers also help us give instructions or describe steps. For example, "First, wash your hands. Second, prepare the ingredients. Third, mix them together." Using ordinal numbers makes instructions clear and easy to follow.
Learning ordinal numbers is a basic but important skill in English. It helps us communicate more effectively in many situations.
( )6. What do we use ordinal numbers to talk about?
A. Colors and shapes. B. Dates, positions and orders.
C. Sizes and weights. D. Weather and seasons.
( )7. Which of the following is an exception in forming ordinal numbers?
A. Fourth. B. Sixth. C. Seventh. D. Twelfth.
( )8. "This is my third time to visit Beijing" means the writer ______.
A. has been to Beijing once B. has been to Beijing twice
C. has been to Beijing three times D. has never been to Beijing
( )9. Why do we use ordinal numbers in instructions?
A. To make them longer. B. To make them clear and easy to follow.
C. To make them more difficult. D. To make them more interesting.
( )10. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Ordinal numbers are difficult to learn.
B. Ordinal numbers are useful in many situations.
C. Ordinal numbers are only used for dates.
D. Ordinal numbers are not important.
C My First Tree-planting Day
I will never forget my first Tree-planting Day. It was March 12th, two years ago. I was in Grade 6 at that time. My teacher, Mr. Zhang, took our class to the hill near our school to plant trees.
When we arrived, Mr. Zhang showed us how to plant a tree. First, he dug a hole in the ground. Second, he put the young tree into the hole carefully. Third, he filled the hole with soil and patted it down. Fourth, he watered the tree. He told us to follow these steps.
I was very excited. I found a spot and started to dig. But the ground was hard and I was not strong enough. My friend Li Ming came to help me. We worked together. He dug the hole and I held the tree. We put the soil back and watered it. We did the fifth step together — we put a name tag on the tree and wrote our names on it.
Now, two years later, I often go back to the hill to see "our tree". It has grown taller and stronger. Every time I see it, I feel proud. Tree-planting Day taught me that small actions can make a big difference to our environment.

D. Because the writer did not know how to dig.

A. A small flag. B. A name tag with their names.
C. A flower. D. A piece of paper.

A Special Mid-Autumn Festival
Last Mid-Autumn Festival, my family and I had a very special celebration. Usually, we just eat mooncakes and enjoy the moon at home. But last year, we did something different.
My father is a teacher. He told us that some children in the mountain area couldn't celebrate the festival with their families because their parents worked far away. So my family decided to visit those children. On the morning of the festival, we drove to a small village in the mountains. We brought mooncakes, fruits, and some gifts for the children.
When we arrived, the children were very happy to see us. They sang songs and danced for us. My mother taught them how to make mooncakes. They were very interested. In the evening, we had a big dinner together and enjoyed the full moon. Everyone was laughing and talking.
That night, I felt very warm in my heart. The Mid-Autumn Festival is about family and love. But love can go beyond blood. I learned that sharing love with others makes the festival even more meaningful.
