Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda. The strong and fast-growing crop is seen as having real growth possibility.
Along a 3-kilometer stretch of the River Rwizi, environment protection officers recently planted new bamboo and cleared room for last year’s survivors to grow. The River Rwizi is the most important river in western Uganda that includes the major city of Mbarara.A successful bamboo forest will prevent the river from being damaged by people, including sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened(威胁) it.
“Once bamboo is established,it is almost like a net,” says Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environmental officer who is the project’s technical advisor.“The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”
In Uganda, bamboo can be burned for fuel in rural communities, taking pressure off decreasing forests of eucalyptus(桉树) and other natural resources. It is a strong plant that can grow almost anywhere, even in the face of natural disasters. And businesses can turn it into products ranging from furniture to toothpicks.
The Ugandan government has set a 10-year policy that calls for planting 300,000 hectares of bamboo. Most of it will be grown on private land by 2029 as part of wider reforestation efforts. That is a high goal. The Uganda Bamboo Association, the largest such group with 340 members, has planted only 500 hectares.Even with growing interest in bamboo farming, officials will have to push more farmers in rural parts of Uganda to plant large areas of land with bamboo.
A single bamboo pole brings in a little less than a dollar,so farmers need to grow a lot to earn enough.Bamboo promoters are encouraging them to see a bamboo plantation as the same kind of money-making crop as coffee or tea.Banks are lending bamboo “plantation capital” money that promises ownership of large bamboo forests.

There are many amazing waterfalls all over the world. But none is as special as Blood Falls in Antarctica. The waterfall, which comes out from the top of the Taylor Glacier, has bright red water.People have known about this five-story-high waterfall for more than a century. But the reason for its red water was unknown. Now,a team led by W.Berry Lyons from The Ohio State University might have found the answer.
Australian geologist Griffith Taylor’s expedition(探险队) discovered Blood Falls in 1911.They were in high spirits. The researchers thought its color was because of red algae(藻类).However, after they thought for a second time, their further studies didn’t support this idea.Later studies thought that the blood-red color was most likely from the iron atoms(铁原子) in the ice lake that feeds the waterfall.
When Lyons and his team checked the water, they found only a few iron atoms. What they did find, though, were iron-rich nanospheres(纳米球),which are 100 times smaller than human red blood cells. They are changed, giving the water flowing to the Blood Falls its red color.
“As soon as I looked at the pictures from the microscope,I noticed there were these little iron-rich nanospheres, and that they have lots of different things in them,” said study co-author Ken Livi.“In order to be a mineral, atoms must be organized in a very specific, crystalline structure(晶体结构).These nanospheres aren’t crystalline and the methods used before to examine the solids(固体) did not find them.”
The researchers believe their discovery may have effects beyond Earth. The ice lake that feeds Blood Falls is salty, with no light or oxygen, similar to conditions on Mars.Yet,it has managed to protect the area for millions of years. This suggests there could also be life on Mars and other planets. However,we have yet to send the right tool to prove this.
