Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s School Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent (发明). Let your imagination run wild and post (发布) your ideas below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you ________ in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d go to school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 9
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humans have changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors (祖先)! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8
A flying car! You could go anywhere you wanted. It could prevent traffic jams (堵塞) during rush hour. We wouldn’t have to build so many highways. There would be more space to plant trees. The air would be cleaner and fresher. My flying car would be powered by solar energy (太阳能). We could save the Earth and all the plants and animals too.
—Rebecca, from Grade 7

Judy was about to turn 7 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said.
At first, Judy wasn’t sure. Then she gave it some thought. “It can be a good idea.” Judy told TIME for Kids. “I already had everything I needed, and these kids that were going through things at the hospital— they needed it more than I did.”
Now a freshman in high school, Judy continues to bring joy to kids and teens being treated for serious illnesses. In December 2023, it was her 9th year to donate her birthday gifts to the children’s hospital in San Antonio, Fexas.
“Just to see their little faces when she hands them the gifts, that’s always been our favorite part,” says Judy’s mom, Sondra Perez. “Seeing the kids’ reactions just touches our heart.”
Kids, 10 and older are more often hospitalized for mental health problems. Whatever the patient’s age, a hospital stay can be stressful. Judy’s effort is a bright light during a difficult time.
Along with an invitation to Judy’s party, her friends get a list of gift ideas for kids at the hospital. For the littlest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers, my age or older,” Judy says, “it might be nail polish or books.”
After the first round of donations, Judy shares the list with family, coaches, and teammates. The number of donations “grows every year,” she says, but she doesn’t keep an exact count. Instead, she judges by sight. “We measure how much of the carpet it covers in our living room,” Judy says. “Last year, it covered the whole carpet (地毯).”
Then it’s time to share the gifts with kids at the hospital. “Seeing other people’s happiness—— that’s all that matters to me,” Judy says.
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at the children’s hospital. She has seen firsthand the influence of Judy’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and doctors.” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at how generous she was at such a young age.”
Judy’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have encouraged others to follow in her footsteps. Friends have collected and donated gifts for their birthdays too. And Judy says her 11-year-old twin sister helps animals by donating to the Humane Society.
“Giving to others, it’s just a good feeling to have at the end of the day,” Judy says. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can.”

I once thought I had superpower in my senior year of high school. I was living with my grandparents at that time. My grandparents had recently been out of work. While they’d managed to save money to buy a house, they didn’t have enough money for living cost.
① So, my grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the whole building clean was a stressful job for an old man. Realizing this, I began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying waste baskets, for a small payment.
② When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a promise that required me to get up an hour earlier each morning. I’d go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I’d return home, change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I’d rush back to school, always at the last minute.
③ On two mornings, at the very moment I stepped onto the sidewalk (人行道) in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal (信号) for students to go to class. This surprising coincidence caused me to improve my action. I carefully planned each step of my morning activity. I sped myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This effort gave me a huge sense of achievement — and some strange feelings.
④ Twenty years later, at a school get-together, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, the head teacher, who had been in control of ringing the bell by pushing a button (按钮) in his office. I couldn’t stop talking about my superpower. I told Mr Spiry about how I had kept my difficult morning work in good order, how my timing had been perfect. “Oh that,” he said. “Do you remember my office windows? I used to look out through the windows. I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk, I’d ring the bell.”
66. Why did the writer’s grandfather work as a doorkeeper after he was out of work?
A. Because he needed the job to support the family.
B. Because he was interested in working for extra hours.
C. Because he wanted to stay close to his grandson at school.
D. Because he found he could be well paid by taking on the job.
67. The sentence “It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower.” should be put in ________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
68. What does the underlined word “coincidence” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 巧合 B. 举措 C. 业绩 D. 表现
69. How would the writer feel after hearing what Harold Spiry said?
A. Proud. B. Surprised. C. Relaxed. D. Calm.
70. What message does the writer’s story express?
A. Our dream can be realized through hard work.
B. Personal superpower brings people joy and success.
C. Careful plans lead to the development of special skills.
D. Our achievements are often supported by unseen kindness.

Have you ever thought about what’s more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? Many people choose style over comfort and some even go to extremes (极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn’t everything. It’s more important to be healthy.
Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?
Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels to make them look taller. But these shoes can actually hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably. Some even wear tight clothes that influence blood circulation, making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?
Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?
So, let’s rethink what’s really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don’t tell us anything about a person’s character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let’s eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, your worth is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.
71. Why do some people go on extreme diets according to the text?
A. Because the diets are healthy. B. Because they want to save time.
C. Because they want to save money. D. Because they just want to look pretty.
72. What is the writer’s purpose of using a question in each paragraph?
A. To ask for help from readers. B. To describe the latest fashion.
C. To tell how to spend time and money. D. To lead readers to think about the topic.
73. What does the underlined word “well-being” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Growth. B. Health. C. Warmth. D. Wealth.
74. What is the structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
75. What can we learn from the text?
A. You are what you eat. B. Laughter is the best medicine.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. Actions speak louder than words.
【答案】71. D 72. D 73. B 74. C 75. C

A song which helped me out
It’s my honor to speak here and I am very glad to share my topic with all of you. Today I’d like to talk about “A song” which helped me out.
I had promised to enter the top 5 of our class in this midterm examination. But I failed. How sad I was. I locked myself in my room and didn’t speak to anyone.
I cried and reproached myself. About two hours later, a song named “True Hero” came into my ears from the living room. I listened carefully. I was touched deeply by its lyrics. It said “put all your heart into realizing your dream...Nobody can succeed easily.” I made up my mind to study harder.
So when you fail or have difficulty, don’t lose heart, listen to the song “True Hero” and it will help you out.
Thank you for your listening.

61. How many times has she donated her gifts to the children’s hospital before 2024?
