Great minds shine brightly through persistent efforts and noble virtues. Their lifelong dedication and rigorous attitude always guide teenage students to keep learning bravely and make progress. Lin Yue, a Grade 9 student, always respects ancient Chinese craftsmen and researchers who devoted themselves to scientific exploration.
From her history and science classes, she learned about Tan Yunxian, a respectable medical researcher of the Ming dynasty. Tan made outstanding ___1___ to traditional Chinese medical science and women’s health care. What touched Lin Yue deeply was Tan’s down-to-earth spirit. She spent decades sorting out complicated medical records and rewrote professional medical knowledge in plain language so that ordinary people and beginner learners could understand it without difficulty.
With this inspiring story with mind, Lin Yue decided to do something meaningful for her classmates. Most Grade 9 students feel stressed because some physics and chemistry knowledge is abstract and hard to master. At first, Lin Yue was __2___ that her limited learning experience might not allow her to sort out knowledge accurately. She also worried that her summary might have mistakes and fail to help others.
However, she never feared __3__ in the process. She firmly believed that continuous perseverance matters far more than natural talent. She was certain that steady practice and careful summary would bring positive changes. Besides asking her teachers for professional guidance, she often ___4___ with her classmates to collect their real learning troubles and weak points.

After dozens of revisions and improvements, she finally finished a practical learning handbook. The handbook is concise, targeted and ___5__ for middle school students to learn and review key knowledge.
All teachers and classmates consider Lin Yue as a careful, creative and warm-hearted teenager. She always says that greatness never belongs only to famous experts and scholars. Every ordinary teenager has the ___6___ to create value and help others as long as they stick to their goals and keep working hard.
In her opinion, the true meaning of creativity is to __7__ others and bring convenient and positive changes to study and life. Meanwhile, we should follow objective academic rules and keep a __8___ mind when exploring new knowledge. Blind pursuit of quick progress will break the balance of learning and affect long-term growth.

Many of us have felt this before. One moment, we’re lying in bed, ready to sleep. The next, we’re wide awake, thinking or worrying about the future. What will we be doing in ten years? Can we become who we want to be? Should we try to shape the future, or just accept what happens? Stories of two famous writers may have the answers.
The American writer, Ernest Hemingway, made up his mind to write from early childhood. After high school, he worked at a local newspaper. He later became a foreign reporter and used his experiences in Europe and Cuba in his writing. In his words, "I decided that I would write one story about each thing that I knew about." Having set himself this goal, he wrote novels and short stories according to his personal experiences such as bullfighting and deep-sea fishing. His novel The Old Man and The Sea won the Pulitzer Prize. Later, he went on to win the Nobel Prize.
Unlike Hemingway, the young Arthur Conan Doyle started as a doctor. He always dreamed of becoming a writer of historical novels. However, the success of these novels was nothing compared to his detective (侦探) stories, Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly, Doyle wrote some of his early Holmes stories while he was waiting for patients. After Sherlock Holmes made him widely known, Doyle gave up medicine and wrote full-time. But he still hoped to become known for his historical novels. As a result, Doyle killed off the famous detective in a novel so that he could have time for his “serious” writings. The readers, however, couldn’t get enough of Sherlock Holmes. They were so angry that Doyle had to bring Holmes back from the dead. Doyle’s many historical novels, plays and poems are largely forgotten, but Sherlock Holmes remains popular.
Both of these men succeeded in the end but their roads to success were very different. Some people are luckier than others and plans do not always become reality, as can be shown by comparing the lives of these two famous writers. So, whatever twists and turns you might meet with, take a leaf out of the books of these two writers and be ready for the unexpected.
1. What made Hemingway a successful writer?
A. Meeting readers’ interest. B. Receiving the Nobel Prize.
C. Writing from an early age. D. Connecting his works with life.
2. Why did Doyle kill off Sherlock Holmes in a novel?
A. He was tired of writing detective stories. B. He failed to come up with any new ideas.
C. He hoped to be successful in other writings. D. He considered his medical career more important.
3. What does the underlined phrase “twists and turns” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A. easy and straight roads B. planned and expected events
C. difficult and unexpected changes D. small and unimportant challenges
4. What can we learn from the two writers?
A. Develop our careers as we expect. B. Get prepared for the unknown future.
C. Change our plans according to our goals. D. The harder we work, the luckier we will be.

Sometimes, when we’re not quite awake but not fully asleep either, our brains might be really good at coming up with new ideas. A study found that people who have a light sleep would be better at solving problems later.
Researchers read stories about some scientists solving difficult problems after a light and short sleep. It is said that the famous inventor Thomas Edison used to look for the twilight (朦胧的) moments between wakefulness and sleep. He used to sit in a chair and hold two balls. As he started to fall asleep, the balls fell down and made a noise that woke him up. This way, he could write down his ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them.
To see if Edison’s idea could work for other people, researchers asked 103 healthy people to come to their lab. They had to try to solve a difficult Maths problem. After that, they got a 20-minute break in a quiet and dark room. They sat in chairs and held a light bottle in one hand, just like the way Edison did. The researchers told them to close their eyes and rest or even sleep if they wanted to. After the break, they went back to the Maths problem.
While they were resting, the researchers checked their brainwaves. They found that more than half of the people didn’t fall asleep. But 24 people did fall asleep and had a light sleep called N1. Another 14 people went into a deeper sleep called N2.
The researchers saw a great difference between the groups. The people who had a light sleep, the N1 stage, were about 2.7 times more likely to solve it than people who stayed awake. And they were about 5.9 times more likely to solve it than those who went into the deeper N2 sleep.
However, more work is needed to find out the relation between N1 and creativity. The results are interesting because they suggest that maybe we can learn how to get into this light sleep stage on purpose.
It seems that Edison knew something about how being a bit sleepy can help us be more creative. But don’t think that you should copy his habits completely. He also thought that sleeping was a waste of time.
1. Why does the writer mention Thomas Edison in Paragraph 2?
A. To tell the importance of sleep. B. To explain why Edison slept well.
C. To introduce Edison’s inventions. D. To show how researchers got their idea.
2. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A. why the study was designed B. how the study was carried out
C. what result the study showed D. what the future study may focus on
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Holding a ball while sleeping helps people come up with new ideas.
B. People can learn some skills after reaching the twilight stage of sleep.
C. A light sleep may make people creative and be better problem solvers.
D. Staying awake for a long time will make people forget things easily.
4. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to sleep less in the daytime. B. To discuss the importance of a deep sleep.
C. To compare different kinds of sleep. D. To prove the value of a light sleep.

Then she came up with a wonderful idea. She designed simple operation guides with bright colors, large fonts and vivid pictures. 4 The elderly can follow the picture steps to operate smart devices easily and independently.
Su Tong’s small creative idea brings great convenience to the whole community. She always says that we should never ignore small troubles in daily life. 5 As long as we dare to think differently and try to make changes, every ordinary person can have valuable creative ideas.
A. But in fact, ordinary teenagers can also come up with great creative ideas.
B. She found a common but troublesome problem around her community.
C. She posted these picture guides in the community activity room.
D. Most elderly residents there lack experience in using smart devices.
E. Small daily problems are the best source of creative inspiration.

A
Many of us have felt this before.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. C 4. B

【答案】1. D 2. B 3. C 4. D
