Numbers are not just numbers. They have cultural (文化) meanings. Let’s see some of the lucky and unlucky numbers around the world.
First, the number four. Chinese people don’t like the number four because it sounds like the Chinese word “death”. But people in Australia love the number. Four is the top pick (首选) for them to get new phone numbers or room numbers.
Next, the number six. Six is a lucky number in China. Six means everything goes well in Chinese. During the Spring Festival, many parents give 666 yuan to their children as lucky money. But the number 666 is not welcome in English-speaking countries. So it’s not good to use 666 when you talk with your friends from Canada or America.
The number eight is a lucky number in most countries. This number is welcomed among Chinese people because it has similar (相似的) pronunciation to “Fa”. The Beijing Summer Olympics started at 8:08 p.m. on 8th August 2008. Eight is also a lucky number in Japan.
根据内容,判断下列句子正误,正确的填“T”,错误的填“F”。

I’m Mike Smith, a doctor from London. I really feel that life in China is changing so quickly. Recently I had a business trip to Tianjin. I left my Beijing apartment (公寓) and walked half a street to the subway station. About twelve stops later, I reached the high-speed railway station. After two minutes of security (安检), I picked up my ticket. I bought it on my phone while on the subway. Then I walked to the end and got on the train. Twenty-eight minutes later, I was in the center of a beautiful city-Tianjin. I could enjoy a nice walk along the riverside towards my hotel. It is surprising that the whole experience took a very short time, with no cars, no airport, no credit cards (信用卡) and no long lines, just my smartphone, only some US dollars and comfortable walking shoes. In most places in the developed world, there is no experience like this. But China is different.
So in my opinion, if we think highly of China’s modern wonders (奇观), I believe its high-speed railway system (系统) must be one of them. And it’s one symbol (象征) of a new China’s power as well.
36. Where is Mike Smith from?
A. America. B. The UK. C. Australia.
37. How did Mike buy his ticket to Tianjin?
A. On his phone. B. With the help of his friend. C. From the subway ticket office.
38. How many means of transport did Mike use from his apartment to the hotel in Tianjin?

A. It makes him angry. B. He doesn’t like it. C. He praises (表扬) it.
D
Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you tell why? Some people think kindness is something out of love, while others believe it is just for being more popular. But research (研究) shows that being kind can activate (激活) a part of the brain called striatum (纹状体) and make us feel better. Why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile, people around you may be smiling too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not start that chain (链条) of good feelings for people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops (发展) a social connection with other people. Acts of kindness like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research shows that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. In the same way, charities (慈善) also help people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of middle school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. Imagine (想象) that you make cakes for your friends and your friends will make cakes for you each month. Then you are getting cakes a lot more days than giving them.
The story doesn’t end here. Research also shows that being kind and being happy make it a wonderful two-way relationship (关系). Being kind may make you feel happier, and if you are happy, you can act kindlier.
41. How does the writer lead in the topic (主题)?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions. C. By giving numbers.
42. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指的是)?
A. The kind act. B. The family. C. The smile.
43. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
44. What can we know from the passage?
A. A kind act just makes someone who is sad better.
B. Spending money on ourselves can make us happier than spending it on others.
C. If we are kind to others, we will get more from them.
45. What’s the purpose (目的) of this passage?
A. To introduce (介绍) why and how being kind makes us happy.
B. To show middle school students’ kindness.
C. To compare different kind acts.

【16题详解】
句意:狗和猫为农夫工作。
根据下文“works in the field”可知,它们为农夫干活,应用worked。loved“喜爱”、looked“看”不符合语境。故选B。

【答案】41. B 42. A 43. C 44. C 45. A
