In 2019, a severe toothache turned into the biggest health crisis of my life, ultimately landing me in an intensive care unit for a week. Once I recovered, I had to make sense of why this had happened to me. Personal carelessness? Terrible luck? A fault of the US healthcare system? Disturbed and unsure, I turned to a place where I had long found answers to existential questions — quantum physics (量子物理).
Physics is often considered to be a solid, rigorous, objective science based on empiricism and mathematics. It breaks the world into pieces, analyses each of them, and then reassembles them all into a whole that we understand better.
This process doesn’t care about feelings, with rules like black holes working the same way for everyone. Yet I have always taken physics extremely personally, a perspective I share in my book Entangled States: A life according to quantum physics.
It was completely my fault because I dislike going to the dentist. It wasn’t my fault at all because I was a graduate student and couldn’t afford the dentist anyway. Trying to balance these two sequences of cause and effect only disturbed me further.
Relief unexpectedly came to me through chatting with physicists working in this field. I learned about the “quantum switch”. We humans follow fixed one-way cause-and-effect rules, but tiny light particles, photons (光子), exist in a quantum state where “A causes B” and “B causes A” can be true simultaneously. This seemingly impossible dual causality lessened my tooth trouble.
This brought me some peace and informed my future decision-making. I go to the dentist more now, and I believe that improving the working conditions of graduate students in the US is urgent and crucial.
In my book, I describe a dozen examples of quantum physics offering me guidance for something I couldn’t understand about my life and the world, or at least nudging me into thinking differently. I write about my hands-on experiences, all in conversation with what I have learned about quantum physics.
4. Why did the author turn to quantum physics for the answer after her recovery?
A. She failed to figure out her unexpected health crisis.
B. She doubted the reliability of the US healthcare system.
C. She believed physics could work wonders to cure her disease.
D. She intended to collect writing materials for her upcoming book.
5. What does the underlined phrase “dual causality” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Cause and effect follow a fixed one-way order.
B. One single factor leads to several different results.
C. Two events can cause each other at the same time.
D. Two separate causes produce the same final effect.
6. Which opinion will the author accept with this new quantum idea?
A. Competition pressure brings no benefits at all.
B. Freedom and absolute order can never coexist.
C. Strict rules are either good or bad without exception.
D. Suffering builds wisdom and wisdom softens suffering.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Different Ways to Resolve Life Dilemmas
B. The Conflicts Hidden in Quantum Physics
C. Quantum Physics Reshapes My Life Outlook
D. A Toothache Opens the Door to a New Science

After 10 days in space, the crew of Artemis II described their bond as inseparable. Scientists overwintering in Antarctic research stations might greet such statements with a collective eye-roll and a suggestion that the astronauts try ten months together, as opposed to ten days. Research published this week in PNAS shows how a winter in Antarctica can reverse the normal benefits of social interaction.
The study followed 12 hivernauts (越冬者) based at Concordia over the course of their ten-month mission. As the hivernauts ran experiments, fixed machinery and shared meals, sensors recorded their closeness to each other. They also completed questionnaires measuring loneliness, individual performance, team conflict and unity.
Winter temperatures at Concordia can reach -80°C, making it impossible to go outside without specialized gear. The station spends around four months in total darkness and its nearest neighbour is 560km away. Hivernauts have private sleeping quarters, but share their research and social space. As the winter progressed, the hivernauts reported increasing levels of loneliness and paranoia (妄想症), and rated their individual performance lower. Social interaction with crew mates did not help — close-range interactions related to worse ratings of group conflict and more paranoia.
In normal organizations, more contact with colleagues is usually good for well-being. “But it seems that in this restricted environment it is exactly the opposite,” explained Jan Schmutz, an author of the study. He suspects the difference may arise from a lack of privacy. “We humans are deeply social creatures, but also there are boundaries.”
Though Antarctic researchers are psychologically screened before heading south, there are still examples of tensions boiling over. Earlier this year a South Korean researcher was evacuated from the Jang Bogo research station after threatening colleagues with a knife. In 2018 a Russian engineer at another Antarctic base attacked a colleague after he revealed the endings of several books.
The latest study focused on a single crew over a single winter but its results will hold lessons for long-duration space missions. Dr Schmutz thinks that soft skills like teamwork and conflict management should form a larger part of pre-mission training. That way more researchers may return from their terms with the joyous fellowship of the Artemis crew.
8. What’s Antarctic scientists’ attitude to astronauts’ comments?
A. Tolerant. B. Doubtful.
C. Approving. D. Uninterested.
9. What is the key discovery of the Concordia-based study?
A. Excessive closeness leads to the loss of privacy.
B. Long-term close contact harms people’s mental state.
C. Loneliness and paranoia remain in complete darkness.
D. More interaction helps improve teamwork in cold areas.
10. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Strict mental tests for Antarctic workers.
B. Violent conflicts among polar researchers.
C. Hidden causes of quarrels in isolated bases.
D. Effective ways to stop fights at research stations.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To present the study value and practical advice.
B. To prove short-term cooperation brings harmony.
C. To compare the training of polar and space crews.
D. To highlight the importance of pre-mission training.
D
It began in the 1980s as a way to quickly produce simple prototype models in plastic. These days 3D printing or "additive manufacturing" is used to make kitchen gadgets, jet-engine parts, dental implants and even some buildings.
In a paper published in Science Advances, a team of researchers led by Yong Lin Kong and his colleagues at Rice University propose another application. They have come up with a way to print electronic circuits onto delicate materials, including living tissue. The researchers hope that could eventually lead to medical implants that wirelessly monitor the condition of their recipients, high tech pills and more.
3D printing circuitry is not a new idea. Nano Dimension, for instance, prints electronics into communication equipment and medical sensors. Printers made by Optomec, build antennas directly into smartphone cases, as well as printing circuits onto touch screens and solar panels.
The process uses electronic inks that contain tiny particles of conductive material, such as copper, silver or gold. The particles are then joined together to form a conductive pathway, usually by a process known as annealing, which involves either heating the entire product in furnace (熔炉), or attacking the inks with a laser.
But that approach has limits, says Dr. Kong. The heat can damage sensitive materials, including some polymers and living tissue. His team has developed a way to deal with electronic inks using microwaves focused into a beam smaller than a human hair. The precision of the beam ensures that only the ink particles heat up, avoiding any damage to the surrounding substances.
The researchers produced a special resonator (谐振器) to boost the microwave energy and a tapered tip to focus the beam into a dot less than 200 millionths of a meter across. The kit is small enough to be fitted to a desktop 3D printer. By adjusting the power of the beam, it is possible to change the microstructure of the ink. This can be used to create regions of higher or lower conductivity along the circuit, allowing some components, such as resistors (电阻), to be created within the wiring. This capability opens the door to printing electronic circuits directly onto heat-sensitive materials like flexible plastics or even human skin.
12. What new progress has Kong’s research team achieved?
A. It makes plastic industrial models.
B. It develops wires for high tech pills.
C. It produces parts for aircraft engines.
D. It prints circuits on fragile substances.
13. What does the underlined word “annealing” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A heating method to combine metal particles.
B. A physical means to store conductive metal ink mixtures.
C. A technical operation to narrow focused microwave beams.
D. A burning treatment to remove particles from electronic inks.
14. What is the key breakthrough of Dr. Kong’s research team?
A. A new type of conductive electronic ink.
B. An approach to heating the ink accurately.
C. A 3D printer working faster than traditional ones.
D. A method of using microwave at room temperature.
15. What will the following paragraph most probably discuss?
A. The ways to improve desktop 3D-printing quality.
B. The potential applications of the new technology.
C. The major limitations of 3D printing techniques.
D. The working principles of the special resonator.

Sleeping during the day is usually the preserve of shift workers and cats. But the science suggests that office workers can benefit, too. A randomized controlled trial in 2025 found that nappers woke up with improvements to mood, alertness and memory. ____16____ A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that healthy adults who took regular naps had a 37% lower risk of dying from heart disease compared with non-nappers.
____17____ Sleep scientists tend to agree that a short “power” nap, somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes, is best. For example, NASA found that a 26-minute power nap enhanced pilots’ physiological awareness and performance. Nevertheless, sleep for too long and you enter the deeper phases of the 90-minute sleep cycle and wake up feeling dizzy. ____18____ So an alarm clock is a vital tool for the health-conscious.
Coffee, like cappuccino, is a popular cure for midday sleepiness. ____19____ A study published recently found power naps to be more effective than caffeine at improving alertness and memory. A midday doze could even reverse the effects of a bad night’s sleep.
“The rest and the spell of sleep in the middle of the day”, Churchill wrote in his autobiography, “refresh the human frame far more than a long night.” Modern sleep experts might not go so far. But if you have time for a Churchill-like catnap, it could do you some good. ____20____
A. Timing is crucial, though.
B. Just remember to set an alarm.
C. A “nappuccino” might work better.
D. Napping habitually might also be wise.
E. Coffee proves much better than short naps.
F. You may also struggle to fall asleep at night.
G. Taking a nap is probably a double-edged sword.

Mark Junker, a 57-year-old experienced hiker, went hiking along Juan de Fuca Marine Trail with his 18-year-old daughter Sophia last Friday. They had enjoyed a quiet night camping beside the beach and planned to march to Chin Beach as their next stop. The trail was wet and muddy due to recent rains lasting for several days. To avoid messy branches stretching across the track, Mark stepped off the marked path, thinking the smooth ground covered with dead leaves ahead was firmer to walk on.
Unexpectedly, his legs sank instantly into thick hidden clay covered by fallen leaves. Soon he was trapped up to his hips in the sticky mud pit (泥潭). He took off his heavy backpack loaded with camping supplies and struggled hard to pull himself free, yet every move only made him sink deeper into the cold mud. Sophia tried her best to drag him out with trekking poles (登山杖), but she was far too weak to move his body a little. Worse still, there was no cell signal deep in the forest, leaving them unable to call for emergency help.
Minutes passed and Mark began to shiver from cold and fear creeping over him. They shouted repeatedly at the top of their voices, hoping passers-by would hear their desperate cries. Soon two hikers appeared and tried to pull Mark backward with combined strength, but the clay held him tightly. They continued to cry for assistance for almost an hour until they were exhausted to utter a single word.
Cold wind swept through the woods as the sky gradually darkened. Mark felt hopeless, wondering if he could get out before night fell and surrounded them with total darkness. Just then, a group of six hikers with rich outdoor experience walked toward them.

B
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. C

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第一段“Once I recovered, I had to make sense of why this had happened to me. Personal carelessness? Terrible luck? A fault of the US healthcare system? Disturbed and unsure, I turned to a place where I had long found answers to existential questions — quantum physics.(康复之后,我必须弄明白这件事为何会发生在我身上。是个人疏忽?运气太差?还是美国医疗体系的问题?内心烦躁又迷茫,我转向了一个长久以来帮我寻找人生终极问题答案的领域——量子物理。)”可知,作者无法弄清楚这场突如其来的健康危机,因此求助量子物理寻求答案。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据原文第五段“We humans follow fixed one-way cause-and-effect rules, but tiny light particles, photons, exist in a quantum state where “A causes B” and “B causes A” can be true simultaneously.(人类遵循固定的单向因果法则,但是微小的光粒子——光子,存在于一种量子状态中,在这种状态下“A导致B”和“B导致A”可以同时成立。)”可知,dual causality指“A导致B”和“B导致A”可以同时成立的情况,即两件事情可以同时互为因果。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第四段“It was completely my fault because I dislike going to the dentist. It wasn’t my fault at all because I was a graduate student and couldn’t afford the dentist anyway. Trying to balance these two sequences of cause and effect only disturbed me further.(这完全是我的错,因为我不爱看牙医。
根据原文最后一段“In my book, I describe a dozen examples of quantum physics offering me guidance for something I couldn’t understand about my life and the world, or at least nudging me into thinking differently.(在我的书中,我列举了十几个例子,说明量子物理为我理解生活与世界中难以明白的事情提供指引,至少促使我换一种方式思考。)”及全文内容可知,文章介绍作者因牙痛引发严重健康危机,康复后无法理清事件缘由,于是借助量子物理中的量子开关、双向因果理论解开内心困惑。故最佳标题为“量子物理重塑了我的人生观”。
C
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. B 11. A

根据第一段中的“Scientists overwintering in Antarctic research stations might greet such statements with a collective eye-roll and a suggestion that the astronauts try ten months together, as opposed to ten days.(在南极科考站越冬的科学家们听到这类表述可能会集体翻白眼,并建议宇航员试试一起生活十个月,而非十天。)”可推知,南极科学家认为宇航员仅十天的相处经历得出的结论缺乏说服力,对其言论持怀疑态度。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“As the winter progressed, the hivernauts reported increasing levels of loneliness and paranoia (妄想症), and rated their individual performance lower. Social interaction with crew mates did not help — close-range interactions related to worse ratings of group conflict and more paranoia.(随着冬季推移,越冬者的孤独感与偏执感不断上升,对自身个人表现的评价也更低。与队友的社交互动并无助益——近距离接触反而对应着更严重的团队冲突评分与更强的偏执感)”可知,在极端受限的南极环境中,长期密切接触无法改善心理健康,还会加剧团队矛盾与偏执情绪,意在说明长期密切接触会损害人们的心理状态。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。第五段首句“Though Antarctic researchers are psychologically screened before heading south, there are still examples of tensions boiling over.(尽管南极科考人员前往南极前会接受心理筛查,但依然出现过矛盾爆发的事例。)”
根据最后一段中的“The latest study focused on a single crew over a single winter but its results will hold lessons for long-duration space missions. Dr Schmutz thinks that soft skills like teamwork and conflict management should form a larger part of pre-mission training.(这项最新研究虽然只关注了一个团队在一个冬季的情况,但其结果将为长期太空任务提供经验教训。施穆茨博士认为,团队合作和冲突管理等软技能应在任务前培训中占更大比重。)”可推知,本段的写作目的是点明该研究的应用价值,并给出对应的实践建议。
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. B

How is everything going? I’ve been busy planning my coming summer trip to Canada recently, but I’ve run into some trouble and I hope you can help me out.
I’ve found several top tourist spots online, but I have no idea which are really worth visiting for a first-time visitor. Besides, I can’t work out a proper travel route to avoid wasting time on the road. Since you’re quite familiar with your country, could you please recommend some must-see attractions and help me design a suitable 7-day travel route? I’d be extremely grateful for your practical advice.
Looking forward to your early reply.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】The experienced group quickly came up with a practical rescue plan. They laid waterproof mats on the mud and crawled carefully toward Mark. One tied a rope around his waist while another extended a trekking pole for him to grip. At the count of three, they pulled steadily together. After several rounds of careful effort, Mark’s hips rose inch by inch and his legs were nearly freed, yet the thick clay still gripped his ankles tightly. They paused to adjust their strategy, and the group leader encouraged him to stay calm and trust their teamwork.
Mark was close to escaping the mud pit after hours. With one final coordinated pull, his legs were completely released from the sticky trap. Exhausted but safe, he leaned against a tree with a relieved smile. Sophia hugged him tightly, tears rolling down her cheeks. Mark thanked the group sincerely, admitting that even experienced hikers can fall into unexpected danger. He also reflected that this frightening experience taught him a valuable lesson: never underestimate nature’s traps and always stay on the marked path. More importantly, he felt deeply grateful for the kindness of strangers, which turned a potential disaster into a life-changing memory.
