A Travel Guide
Whether you’ re travelling to the islands or the mountains of Thailand, you’ re likely to spend at least one night in its capital city on the way. Bangkok might be noisy and polluted but it’s also an exciting city with plenty of things to see and do. Why not make it a longer stay?
Where to stay
The Khao San Road was a famous traveller spot even before Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in the film The Beach stayed there. But it’s noisy, not very pretty and not very Thai. For something more authentic, Phra Kanong offers an alternative place to stay, with its fantastic street markets where everyday Bangkok people eat, work and live. It’s not as convenient for the main tourist sites, but it has a Skytrain station so you can be at the Grand Palace in 20 minutes.
How to get around
Bangkok’s traffic can be a nightmare. Sure, you can easily take a taxi — if you want to spend hours stuck in traffic jams — but there are two much better ways to get around the city. To explore the temples and historical sites, catch an express boat river taxi or a long-tail boat along the Chao Phraya river and the canals. For the modern part of the city, the Skytrain is a fast, cheap way to travel from the river to the shopping malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit, and the famous Chatuchak street market.
Where to eat
The simple answer is: everywhere! Thai street food is among the best in the world, and for around $5 you can eat a filling and delicious meal. Some food stands have little plastic seats where you can sit and eat and they cook the same dish over and over, like fried chicken on rice or Pad Thai noodles. Head for Chinatown — Yaowarat Street — and choose whatever looks most interesting from the many excellent Chinese and Thai restaurants and food stands.
What to do
After you’ve seen the main sites like the Giant Buddha at the temple of WatPho and the spectacular Grand Palace, and shopped at Chatuchak market, check out the snake farm and watch the live snake show. You can even touch a snake yourself if you want to!
1. What can we know about accommodation in Bangkok?
A. Khao San Road is well-known for its comfortable living conditions.
B. Phra Kanong provides an authentic Thai living experience.
C. Areas close to tourist sites generally have noise problems.
D. The accommodation near the Skytrain stations is insufficient.
2. What is the most efficient way to reach modern shopping areas?
A. Taking taxis. B. Catching an express boat.
C. Taking the Skytrain. D. Catching a long-tail boat.
3. Based on the text, which one of the following could be the best advice for traveling Bangkok?
A. One night is enough to fully experience Bangkok.
B. Avoid express boat river taxis as they often get you stuck in traffic.
C. Select dining places carefully since not all are of good quality.
D. Try to explore Bangkok’s diverse spots for fun.
B
Best friends Tommy, 17, and Daniel, 15, decided to sign up for their school’s robotics team in their freshman year, and began their journey towards changing lives for the better.
They began their work with 3D printers to create parts for their robots, but they wanted their impact to be greater. “It started off with a team idea,” Tommy said. “We were trying to figure out how we could make a difference to society as a first-year robotics team. We later thought of the idea of using 3D printers to make prostheses (假肢), like hands.”
The team worked with IMAHelps, a nonprofit organization, and received help from the Science Robotics Initiative. Shortly after, they began working with their first person in need of a prosthesis.
“We started off with making an artificial (人造的) arm for Samantha, a 12-year-old little girl in Ecuador who lost her arm in a bus accident,” Tommy explains. “We got her measurements and then made the prosthesis. IMAHelps brought it to Samantha and it fit her perfectly and worked well.”
“Samantha had a dream to write, and we wanted to help with that,” adds Daniel.
It didn’t take long for other kids to see Samantha’s prosthesis. A young man named Ernest Priester, 13, asked to have an artificial foot. Later, the team offered to make him one for free. “He started tearing up. It brought so much joy to his eyes.” Tommy says.
This July, the team traveled to Ecuador to deliver four more prostheses to those in need. “We were so happy to help,” Tommy shares.
The team also plans on continuing to give away their 3D creations. “You can do whatever you want to do when it comes to helping people and changing the world,” Tommy says. “There are no age limits.”
“By offering a little bit,” adds Daniel. “We can change a lot.”
4. To make the robotics team’s impact greater, Tommy and Daniel decided to________.
A. create robot parts B. start a robotics course
C. make prostheses D. invent a 3D printer
5. What did the robotics team do for Samantha?
A. They set up IMAHelps for her. B. They made her an artificial arm.
C. They offered her medical treatment. D. They gave her instructions on writing.
6. How does Tommy feel about what they are doing?
A. Curious. B. Relaxed. C. Regretful. D. Pleased.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Tommy and Daniel?
A. Caring. B. Calm. C. Honest. D. Brave.

It might just serve as a way to pass a rainy afternoon, but swimming may be one of humans’ oldest hobbies. The earliest swimming pool dates back to 3000 BCE, in the Indus Valley.
Much later, in the 19th century, swimming pools emerged in Britain and the U.S. But along with them came the challenge of keeping them hygienic. Even now, public and private swimming pools can become hotbeds of infection if they’re not well maintained. Over the last 25 years, swimming pools have been the most common setting for outbreaks of an infectious intestinal disease in England and Wales.
Swimmers can catch cryptosporidium (隐孢子虫) by accidentally swallowing unhealthy matter in the pool water, says Jackie Knee, assistant professor in the London School of tropical Medicine’s Environmental Health Group.
You may go to many lengths to avoid swallowing pool water, but evidence suggests that some still ends up in our bodies. According to a 2017 study conducted at public swimming pools in Ohio involved testing the blood of 549 people, on average, the adults swallowed around 21 mL per hour, while children swallowed around 49 mL per hour.
When one swallows pool water, the chances of this water being an infection risk differs depending on how busy the pool is. One study found that contracting cryptosporidium is more likely when swimming at peak times. The researchers tested water from six pools once a week for 10 weeks in summer 2017, and detected cryptosporidium in 20% of the pool samples, and at least once in each pool. Two thirds of these water samples were during the pool’s busiest times, in the school holidays.
According to Jackie Knee, the risk of chloramines (氯胺) forming above the water can be lowered by ensuring that everyone showers before entering the pool, which helps to wash off faecal matter. Showering can help to lower the risk of spreading and contracting infection. “Other important ways to avoid infections from swimming pools include avoiding swallowing pool water,” Jackie Knee adds.
8. What challenge were swimming pools facing in the 19th century?
A. To reduce costs. B. To keep water clean.
C. To attract customers. D. To get enough water.
9. What did the 2017 study show?
A. Going swimming can be dangerous.
B. Swallowing pool water is hard to avoid.
C. People don’t know the harm of pool water.
D. Adults swallow more pool water than children.
10. What mainly decides infection risk according to paragraph 5?
A. The number of swimmers. B. The size of swimming pools.
C. The length of swimming hours. D. The temperature of pool water.
11. What does Jackie Knee intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To give some analyses. B. To issue some warnings.
C. To make some comments. D. To offer some suggestions.
D
The technology for speech-recognition systems has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. Many voice systems can understand the language when spoken at a normal conversational rate. But even the advanced human-machine interfaces(人机交互) used today are unable to trick the listeners into thinking a computer is a human. Why is this? Simply put, it’s because human beings rely on more than words to convey ideas or interpret messages, such as tones, facial expressions, body movements, and objects in the world around them.
One significant recent achievement in the field of talking computers is virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. If you tell a mobile phone VPA that you want to schedule a lunch with a friend, it can set the appointment in your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” and has earned fame for its elementary sense of humour. Still, the humour is preprogrammed and can be triggered only when human users speak certain key words.
While the potential for “real” communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service. Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy(侵犯隐私).When people use certain speech-recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital trail may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of speech-recognition software is worth expecting. Leading companies in the field hope to make human communication with machines as seamless as possible, just like communicating with another human.
12. According to the passage, what can a VPA do?
A. Entertain users with original jokes. B. Make people regard it as a human.
C. Hold preprogrammed conversations. D. Display the right tones in conversations.
13. Which situation reflects the concerns mentioned in the passage?
A. One VPA service was priced higher for protecting users’ privacy.
B. An airline bore high costs for applying VPAs to its online service.
C. An app failed to offer the right direction when given spoken instructions.
D. Some teenagers became more socially awkward due to the addiction to VPAs.
14. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To inform readers of the double-edged quality of a new technology.
B. To inspire readers to explore the future of a new technology.
C. To promote the application of a new technology.
D. To stress the convenience of a new technology.
15. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. The worries over VPAs. B. Talking to technology.
C. The world of technology. D. Listening to “a real person.”

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? "He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt him." Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington middle school, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internetstar after posting videos of his slam dunk(扣篮) , and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.
Paragraph 1:
A few days later, the good news that Trashaun accepted the invitation to meet Jayce came.

Paragraph 2 :
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability.

【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
A few days later, the good news that Trashaun accepted the invitation to meet Jayce came. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later and they instantly bonded. The day was not spent on self-pity. Instead, they rode bikes around the school's hallways, took photos, and played basketball together. Trashaun taught Jayce how to slam dunks, even giving him a basketball as a gift. He told Jayce he was perfect the way he looked. He encouraged him not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.
Paragraph 2:
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He began to understand that there are many people like him and came to adapt himself to his disability. He recently started practising shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an impact. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.
